Review & Excerpt: Ride It Out by Cara McKenna

Ride it Out (Desert Dogs #4) by Cara McKenna
Publication Date: September 19th by Intermix
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

There’s a new deputy in town, and she’s a law unto herself.

Jeremiah Church is still aching for justice to be served after his father’s murder. Though the killer has been caught, the authorities are no closer to knowing why the Churches were targeted—and if the family’s still at risk. When Miah receives an anonymous letter hinting at a darker conspiracy, he decides it's high time he seeks justice on his own terms, with the help of his fellow Desert Dogs.

Patrol Deputy Nicki Ritchey is new to Fortuity, and hoping to make a clean start for her and her son. Involved in the Church’s case, she's kindled a friendship with Miah that's evolving into something more. But Miah is crossing lines with his personal vendetta, and Nicki’s attraction is making it tough to tell right from wrong…

My Thoughts:
We finally get Miah’s story in Ride It Out and I couldn’t be more pleased.  I felt bad for him when Raina didn’t return his feelings, and moved on with Duncan. I’m happy that they’re a couple, but I wasn’t thrilled that Raina would pass up Miah, because I thought he was such a catch!  Well, her loss, and I can’t help but think Miah is better off without her.  Miah’s always been a favorite of mine because he’s been the one of the Desert Dogs that wanted to settle down with a wife and family, and I do love a guy that craves a traditional future instead of the usual player/no commitments kind of guy that’s more common in romance novels.

Miah’s all out of sorts since his father’s murder, and who can blame him? He’s had to take over the business end of things instead of tending to the ranch, and he hates paperwork.  More than that, Miah hates the fact that the police have no new leads, no clue who murdered his father and it’s been six long months.  The only silver lining in this dark cloud is Nicki, the new Fortuity Deputy. She gets his despair, and anger over his father’s death like no other since her father was murdered as well.  Nicki checks in regularly and so they’ve formed a friendship and a simmering attraction that just grows stronger the more time they spend together. I loved that they had a solid foundation of friendship before they ever took things to the next level. Made it so much hotter when they finally came together.

Miah and Nicki are tentative and not without the usual new relationship insecurities, but they fall hard, irrevocably before they’ve even noticed.  There are obstacles, mostly on Nicki’s side as she has a son, Matty, who’s not settling in Fortuity all that well, at first.  Miah takes the boy under his wing, assigning him duties on the ranch inspiring a love of the land, animals, and the cowboy life that makes such a positive impact on Matty. Love seeing Miah in that fatherly role, because he was such a natural at it.

There is some drama with the murder investigation of Miah’s father, which ties into the ongoing mystery in the series.  Miah and his father were targets, but why?  Miah sidesteps the law to get answers because there’s been no advances in the investigation, and Nicki reluctantly helps because she knows exactly how Miah feels.

Ride It Out was a solid and satisfying end to the Desert Dogs series.  Cara McKenna writes beautifully sensual, and compelling stories, and Ride It Out was no exception!

Review: Burn it Up by Cara McKenna

Publication Date: November 3rd by Signet
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

In the latest from the acclaimed author of Give It All, mount up and ride a roaring motorcycle to Fortuity, Nevada, where the heat is rising…

After a decade spent chasing shadier pursuits, Casey Grossier has come home to the badlands to settle down in Fortuity. Vowing to put his days of dirty money behind him, he’s cleaned up his act and become co-owner of Benji’s Saloon. But despite his efforts to be a better man, he can’t shake his crush on his sweet-faced bartender, even though the woman screams trouble.

Abilene Price hopes she can outrun her mistakes and build a safe, respectable life for herself and her baby. So she’d be wise to keep her distance from her boss, Casey, and the rest of his roughneck motorcycle club, the Desert Dogs. But she just might need their help. The return of a violent figure from Abilene’s past ignites a powder keg—and it’s only the beginning…
My Thoughts:
In the previous book, Casey was clearly smitten with Abilene and even finding out she was pregnant didn’t seem to deter him much.  In Burn it Up Casey has become so much more to Abilene, a friend, a helper, and pretty much a surrogate father to baby Mercy.  He delivered Mercy when they couldn’t get to the hospital in time, so has more than just an attraction for Abilene; he has a deep connection to both her and the baby.  Abilene has come to rely on him so much, and she is attracted as well, so when the baby’s father, James is released from jail, Abilene turns to Casey for protection and support. All the Desert Dogs, Vince, Raina, Duncan and Miah, are there to help as well and I thought Abilene was so very fortunate to find friends like them.

Casey’s mother suffered from early onset dementia, basically losing her mind at around forty, so he didn’t know if he had much of a future because of genetics.  In the past, he took risks and earned his living in a very shady way.  Abilene also had a questionable past, and was far from a saint before she got pregnant and became a mother.   Abilene wants to be a good mother, a good person and not repeat the mistakes of her youth.  Getting involved with a criminal is out of the question.  But as they spend time together, Casey and Abilene find it hard to ignore their desires; they’ve been building gradually and with intensity for so long.  With all these concerns, Casey and Abilene agree to a non serious relationship without any expectations for the future, but when the heart is so involved, in my opinion, it’s impossible to not to get your heart broken if things don’t work out.

Cara McKenna did a wonderful job exploring the emotions behind Casey and Abilene’s insecurities, and why they felt a relationship between them wouldn’t work.  At times, though it felt a little repetitive.  For about 75% of the book I was really pleased with how things were working out romance wise, but at that mark Abilene becomes extremely judgmental over Casey’s past, and I was ticked. Abilene was far from a saint! I can understand why she wouldn’t want anyone knowing her past, because it wasn’t good. At all! And yet (highlight for spoiler) she was disgusted over Casey’s past?!! (end of spoiler) Really?!!  Like I said in my status update: Don’t throw stones when you live in a glass house! I was even more upset because Casey did so much for Abeline and baby Mercy without any expectations.  I think I would’ve been more okay with what happened if Abeline did some proper groveling.  Not enough for me to forgive her actions, and (highlight for spoiler) Casey took her back far too easily.  All was wrapped up a little too quickly, right at the very end. (end of spoiler).  All I have to say, is Abeline is one lucky girl.

Even with all of that, I must say that Ms. McKenna is very talented at writing chemistry and building steam, laying the foundation for some very heated sex scenes!  The whole mystery aspect of the story was a plus for me as well, and we finally see some of Casey’s predictions play out, albeit in an unexpected way.

Review, Excerpt & Giveaway: Crosstown Crush by Cara McKenna

Publication Date: September 1st 2015 by Signet
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

The first in a new series from the “wicked-hot”* author of Hard Time and Give It All explores the fantasies of a daring married couple—and those of a stranger invited to play along in their scandalous little games… When he’s working, Mike Heyer is all business—every inch the alpha male, with the hard, capable body to back up his persona. But at home he can be a different man entirely, harboring appetites only his wife gets to glimpse…

When Samira first learned of her husband’s fantasies, she was reluctant, even alarmed. But after witnessing the way they set him on fire, she yielded, and happily indulged. As their games have intensified, so has the rush. And now so has the risk—they’re poised to take Mike’s indecent desires to the next level, by opening their bed to a sexy, brazen stranger. A man seeming custom-made to grant every last one of Mike and Samira’s sinful wishes.

Welcoming someone new into their lives was always a dangerous proposition, but the couple imagined if anything was at stake, it was their privacy…not their hearts.
My Thoughts:
Cara Mckenna’s writing is beautiful, sensual, and thought provoking. She somehow peels back the layers of a person’s psyche and delves straight into what motivates needs and desires.  I’m not into multiples in a relationship. I’m not a fan of reading about ménages, and certainly not more than two in a marriage, so when I read the synopsis of Crosstown Crush I didn’t think this story would be for me. BUT I do adore Ms. McKenna’s writing and I thought if anyone could make me understand and get on board with this kind of unconventional romance it would be her.  While I do think I get some of the needs and kink Mike, Samira, and Bern got into, I can’t say I was won over.  But hey, that’s me.  If you can enjoy a ménage and like exploring the many facets of this type of kink, this story will exceed your expectations.

I’d never known what cuckolding meant before I read this story, and I still don’t get the appeal.  For some men the thought of catching their wife with another man gets them incredibly hot.  The humiliation of not measuring up to her lover, the jealousy of another man satisfying her better than he could, and then recapturing and reclaiming their wife after turns their crank. Mike and Samira, or Sam, have been married for three years and have been play acting out this scenario, but Sam gets the idea of introducing a real man into their play.  This is where Bern comes in.  He’s turned on by the thought of someone watching while he has sex.  The fact that Sam’s husband would be the voyeur is a bit of an unsettling idea at first, but it thrills him as well.

To me this is a case of “be careful what you wish for”:

Deep in his heart he feared their charade would become reality—she really would favor some stranger over Mike and he’d lose her. He’d lose, and it wouldn’t be the actions of the cruel, heartless women she pretended to be for him. He’d lose her to a man she liked more, and it’d be Mike who’d shoved her into his arms.

Ya think?!

The reason I don’t really care for multiples in a relationship is because I’ll never believe that it could work long term.  I feel that there will always be two out of the three that will be into each other just a little more, and how can the third be happy about that? I know I wouldn’t want to come second in someone’s affections, so this just doesn’t appeal to me.  I think Mike and Sam were fools to think that Sam wouldn’t get her heart attached to Bern.

“My kink is about sex. Sex isn’t sacred to me, apparently. But feelings are.”
“He can touch my body but not my heart? Is that it?” Mike nodded once.  Sam heaved a sad breath.
“Wish I could separate the two as tidily as you can.”

Sam was attracted to Bern initially, she picked him, and it’s just near impossible for a woman not to become emotionally involved with someone she’s sleeping with! This is my opinion. I’m sure some would disagree.  And here’s where I started to dislike Sam, because they were role playing, just the two of them, but she’s the one who wanted to introduce an actual man into their lives, because the thought of sleeping with another man excited her, but this is somehow only Mike’s gift?  Yes, I’ll admit she did it for Mike as well, to get him hot and bothered like nothing else, but still.  I didn’t have much respect for Mike, either. I just kept thinking: What kind of moron would share his wife with another man and think she wouldn’t have feelings for him?

“I don’t know yet. I just don’t know. Can you really promise that you won’t…fall in love with this guy?”
She frowned, said nothing for a long breath, then broke his heart. “No, I can’t promise that.”

Also, I guess this felt more like a romance between Bern and Sam.  Maybe because I witnessing their feelings slowly develop whereas Mike and Sam’s relationship was already established and I never saw them fall for each other. We’re introduced to them as a couple when Sam’s playing out a role tailored for Mike’s kink. I did feel somewhat bad for Mike in the end.  I felt bad for Bern, too. I didn’t feel bad for Samira one bit.

I just didn’t see this ending well in the long run.  HIGHLIGHT FOR SPOILER: I think two will end up shoving one out of their arrangement, or everyone will go their separate ways not able to repair the emotional wreckage.  So while this story leaves off on a happy for now, END OF SPOILER I just didn’t buy it.

I know this comes off as a really negative review, and really, I have no idea how to rate this (see below).  The story did disturb and upset me, but it stayed with me, made me think, made me feel.  And mother of all things holy, this story flipping HOT!!! Hot does not cover it, trust me. We’re talking molten-lava-hot, pulse-pounding, writhing, get-a-warm-willing-body-now-HOT!! So if you can separate yourself from the situation (which I obviously can’t) and sit back and enjoy an emotionally charged, intensely erotic story, Crosstown Crush is for you.

Excerpt:

She headed for the bustling bar, and oh fuck, there he was.
Bern.
He’d told her what he’d be wearing, but it was his face she recognized. Funny how accurate her mental picture had been, based on only that one snapshot. She slowed to a halt, her stomach plummeting to her feet, the room feeling like an elevator with a snapped cable.
Be cool, kid. You’re a shameless slut tonight, and don’t you forget it.
She blew out a tense breath and kept on walking.
Bern’s picture had attracted her, but he was so much . . . more, in three dimensions. Even seated on a stool, she could tell he was big. Big and substantial, with long legs and a strong, handsome profile. His hair was as messy as in the photo, tucked behind his ears, black in the low light of the bar. That picture must have been taken at the height of summer, as his complexion was fairer than she’d expected. A modest beard covered his jaw, neither wild nor fussy. He looked rugged and capable, as though he’d just come from the woods, doing something obscenely manly. Or that was what Sam’s libido decided.
She swallowed, throat feeling thick. He was as sexy as any guy she’d covertly checked out during the girls-only cocktail dates, casting her fake flings. Sexier. A pang of pleasurable guilt warmed her skin.
Sexy and punctual.
Move aside, Nick.
Bern turned as she approached, and she thrilled at the recognition that flashed across his face. His smile was the perfect mix of mischief and shyness, so exactly what she felt, herself.
There were no free stools, giving Bern a chance to bank some chivalry points and kick off his role as smooth-talking, seductive stranger. He stood as she reached the bar. Sam kept her attention on the taps as though she were deliberating.
“Here,” he said, patting the stool.
“Are you sure?”
“Please.” He grabbed his half-drunk glass of beer and stepped back so she could have a seat. She sat with her back to the bar, crossing her legs. Just as her single self might’ve done if a handsome, actual stranger approached her, she kept her purse in her lap to camouflage any unflattering business her snug jeans might be doing to her belly. Huh. Twenty-five again, indeed. She hadn’t felt this self-conscious in years.
“Thanks.”
“Sure.” Oh, he was tall. Taller than her husband, perhaps six two to Mike’s five eleven, meeting one point of his criteria. As promised, he wore a plain gray T-shirt, and beneath it she could make out the contours of his chest and shoulders, trim and powerful as his bare arms. She liked the soft-looking hair there, the shapes of the fingers wrapped around his glass.
I could totally bang this guy if I wanted. Crazy. And did she want that? For herself, as much as for Mike . . . ?
“Can I buy you a drink?” he asked.
“Sure. Cabernet, please.”
He came close, leaning between her and the next seat to get the bartender’s attention. She studied the silver streaked at his temples and peppering his facial hair and nearly swooned right off her perch. His eyes were blue, but not bright like Mike’s. More a stormy sea than a summer sky. Breathing him in, she found no cologne, just the faint but distinct smell of a new man, a scent you couldn’t buy at Sephora. He ordered her wine and told the bartender to add it to his tab, his voice twice as rich and deep and thrilling as it had been on the phone.
For a split second Sam felt busted, realizing Mike was watching her checking Bern out. But busted was the name of the game.
Bern passed her a dangerously large glass of red and stepped back, tucking a thumb in his front pocket and sipping his beer. His thigh was only a couple inches from her crossed knees, and she wondered how warm he’d feel through their two pairs of jeans.
“On your own tonight?” he asked.
She nodded. “You, too?”
“Yeah. My name’s Bern.” He freed his hand to shake hers. And what a shake—firm and warm and solid. She wished Mike could have felt it, too. Meet the man I might just want to fuck while you watch.

Review: Give It All by Cara Mckenna

Give It All (Desert Dogs #2) by Cara McKenna
Publication Date: February 3rd 2014 by Signet
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

A hot new Desert Dogs novel from the author of  Lay It Down

Keep your friends close—and your enemies closer....

Bar owner Raina Harper can’t say for sure what Duncan Welch is to her. With her small Nevada town under siege by a ruthless casino development and still reeling from a spate of murders, she knows that trusting the public face of the corporate invaders is risky to say the least. Though, damn, it’s one fine-looking face.…

Duncan may be a mercenary when it comes to getting the job done, but he’s no villain. In fact, the calculating fixer soon finds himself in the bad guys’ crosshairs, framed and facing professional ruin. To clear his name, he’ll need help from Raina and her roughneck motorcycle club, the Desert Dogs. Gaining their trust won’t be easy, and the molten sexual tension between Raina and Duncan only makes things more complicated—especially since Miah Church, Raina’s friend and ex-lover, would sooner strangle Duncan than shake his hand.

One thing’s certain, though: If they don’t deal with their incendiary attraction soon, the whole damn town might go up in flames.…

My Thoughts:
Give It All was a perfectly imperfect romance, an unlikely pairing that I fell head over heels for! Cara McKenna’s writing was beautiful, profound, and hot as hell!

Duncan Welch came to Fortuity representing Sunnyside Corporation in their efforts to bring a large casino into the little town, basically overtaking any of the small businesses currently established. One of those businesses is Benji’s bar, a longtime fixture.  Needless to say, Duncan isn’t very popular with the locals, but that doesn’t stop the palpable attraction between the bar’s owner, Raina Harper, and Duncan.

Accusations and threats bring Duncan in danger, and after helping the Desert Dogs crew, Vince, Raina, Miah, and Casey, they feel obliged to watch out for Duncan bringing him and Raina closer, and making it impossible to fight their magnetic pull.

At first glance, Raina and Duncan don’t make sense together at all, they seemed so completely opposite. Duncan was urban, and so very civilized whereas Raina was coarse and wild. In fact, I was disappointed when I found out that Give It All would be a romance between them instead of Raina and Miah.  I should’ve known better than to doubt Ms. McKenna’s plans.  Duncan and Raina were like two halves of one whole.

Duncan was the picture of controlled perfection: rich, impeccably dressed, and groomed, but since setting foot in Fortuity he’s been slowly disassembling.  I loved watching his slow unraveling, getting to what made him, and his vulnerable heart tick. In the midst of his coming undone, Duncan finds something precious and unexpected in his relationship with Raina:

Perfection, with this all-wrong woman, in this all-wrong place, at this all-wrong moment of his unraveling life.

Their romance was so HOT!! Ms. McKenna is a master at writing slow building, explosive tension.  I was squirming with lust and need while reading!

Give It All had me completely cracking up in parts.  Much of it was due to Duncan. I loved his snarky, stuffy comebacks:

“I wasn’t offering, merely informing you.”
“Very forceful, Mr. Welch. Are you one of those well dressed, domineering, kinky millionaires I’ve heard about?  Should I get the handcuffs?”
“A gag wouldn’t go astray.”

“Boys’ll be boys,” Ducky said, sounding defensive. Duncan muttered, “Spoken like the proud father of a future date rapist.”

“Do you know what the sexiest thing is about you, Duncan?” Confused, he frowned. “My pocket squares?”

I can’t wait for the next installment of the Desert Dogs series, but I have to say I’m a little worried about Casey’s vision involving one of the team.  I’m hoping for a romance for Miah.  That boy needs some loving after seeing Raina move on with someone else. Also, what’s in store for Casey, and will it include Abilene?

I wasn’t expecting to love Give It All as much as I did.  I had my heart set on romance between Miah and Raina, but I was happily surprised to fall so hard for Duncan and Raina. They seemed completely unmatched, but somehow fit so perfectly together.  I’ve come to adore Cara McKenna’s writing, how it touches down deep and makes me feel.  It’s gorgeous without being overwhelming or distracting.

Review & Giveaway: Lay It Down by Cara McKenna

Publication Date: August 5th 2014 by Signet Eclipse
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

Backbreaking days, wild nights, and the hard hum of steel between your thighs...

That’s a life well lived, according to the Desert Dogs—four friends who call Fortuity, Nevada, their badlands home.

Vince Grossier is the self-crowned outlaw king around here. But when Fortuity’s slick new mayor invites a casino development to town, greed isn’t far behind—and it claims Vince’s good friend as its first casualty. With the law turning a blind eye to the mysterious death, Vince must seek his own brand of justice. The pretty photographer hired by the developers might be the key to uncovering the truth. And she’s a temptation too good to pass up.

Finally free of a controlling ex, Kim Paget’s not looking to be taken for a ride—not on the back of some tattooed roughneck’s bike and definitely not in his bed. But when she uncovers evidence supporting Vince’s suspicions of murder, Kim must entrust her safety to a man whose body threatens danger of a whole different kind.

My Thoughts:
Lay It Down was an intriguing start to Cara McKenna’s new series, and one that I hope to enjoy more as future installments come out.

Vince may come off as big, bad and tough, and he is, but he’s also a loyal friend, son, and brother. So when his longtime friend, Deputy Alex Dunn winds up dead in suspicious circumstances, Vince makes it his mission to find out what happened.  Meeting Kim, a photographer for Sunnyside, the developer of a new casino, fits nicely into his plans of investigation, he just doesn’t expect to feel so deeply for her. When she comes into danger as the mystery unfolds, Vince’s top priority is keeping her safe.

Kim is on assignment in the little dusty town of Fortuity, photographing the future site of a big casino, a project none of the locals are happy about.  During her stay she runs into the big, brutish, and gorgeous Vince. She’s completely fascinated and hopelessly attracted.  He’s not her type at all but Kim’s ready for some passion, and maybe a little danger.

With a punch of hot curiosity, she let herself imagine what a guy like Vince would be like in bed. What he'd say. What he'd want, and how he'd likely bully his way into getting offered whatever that was, just like he'd strong-armed her into staying for the beer. And though that seemed kind of dangerous, it was also exciting.

As she becomes embroiled in the mystery Vince is hell bent in solving, Kim gets way more than she bargained for.

Cara McKenna’s writing is beautiful and she is a pro at writing scenes that can make you seriously hot and send your pulses racing!  Vince was outwardly tough and maybe a little arrogant, but I wouldn’t complain:

He was a giving lover, in his own cocky way. If Vince was selfish, it was purely in how he wanted to master a woman, during sex. And that was a breed of male pushiness she could actually get on board with.

Yes, please!

I enjoyed Lay It Down overall, but I had some trouble investing in the story.  For some reason the characters felt a little superficial, and I never felt like I had a good read on Vince or Kim.  I’m not sure if it had something to do with the third person narration, which is not my favorite and usually makes me feel less connected.  Also, I felt like the mystery, even though only a small part was solved, should’ve been fleshed out more to give us something to grab onto and wonder about in the next book. I guess the mystery will be part of a story arc continuing on into the next books.

Because this is the start of the series, it may be that we’re just getting the groundwork here, getting to know the characters and building on the overall story.  I plan on picking up the next book to find out.

Review: Her Best Laid Plans by Cara McKenna

Her Best Laid Plans by Cara McKenna
Publication Date: April 15th 2014 by Harlequin
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

Experience Ireland—the dramatic beauty, the warm hospitality…and the smoking hot local guys!

Imagine nursing a pint in a cozy, authentic country pub, far from Cork's busy city pulse. Getting here took you a plane, bus, taxi and…um, bicycle. But just as you're resigning yourself to drinking beside grey-haired farmers, you see him—a man with the looks and charm to soothe any heartbroken girl.

He's your bartender. Your really, really gorgeous bartender.

For American Jamie Webb—recently dumped and housesitting for two weeks—Connor Kelleher is like a six-course feast after a 23-year starvation diet. But it's gotta be casual. She's just begun rerouting her life after a three-year man-related detour. Still, a sexy romp (or twenty!) with Sexy McBartender?

But what happens when Jamie's best-laid plans for no future plans with any man begin to change?

My Thoughts:
Her Best Laid Plans was a satisfying romance and one HOT novella, but I didn’t expect any less from Cara McKenna.

Jaime’s life plan derailed after her long-time boyfriend broke up with her.  She was to support him through med school and then he was to return the favor when he finished and she went for her degree in architecture.  Now that Jaime’s put her life on hold and delayed college, she’s two years behind with nothing to show for it. Loser ex!! With the summer off and no plans until she starts college and a new job in the fall, Jaime travels from Boston to Ireland determined to have a good time.  Things are looking up when the gorgeous Irish barman, Connor serves her a Guinness at the local pub. Yet, what Jaime thought of as a vacation fling turns into something so much more. Connor has found a place in her heart and settled in deep.

Connor works at the family’s pub saving every dime to go back to college for his engineering degree.  He’s wasted years on a misspent youth and plans on correcting that in the fall. When Jaime walks into his bar he falls hard for her and starts imagining a future:

“I fell harder for you in a week and a half than I have for any girl I dated for ten times that long,” he said. “If this isn’t worth turning my life inside out for, I can’t imagine what is.”

This romance ticked all the boxes for me in 85 pages! Even though Jaime and Connor’s relationship happens in ten days it didn’t feel like insta-love to me at all. They used every free minute getting to know each other.  And oh, I liked some of the ways they did that:

She sucked in a breath, back arching.
“Good,” he murmured. “Let me figure you out.”
She smiled at that, unseen. Of course he’d want that—to mess around and discover how she worked, how to make her respond.

Oh my, and yes, please!!

This was HOT! Connor and Jaime’s time together was intense, passionate and yet so very sweet.  I was desperately hoping they could work things out in spite of living on two different continents.  A HEA is a requirement for this romance junkie, and let’s just say I had a smile on my face by the end.

Review: Hard Time by Cara McKenna

Hard Time

Hard Time by Cara McKenna
Publication Date: April 15 2014 by Intermix
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

In this all-new novel from the author of Unbound, a woman with a rocky past finds romance in the last place she’d ever expect...

Annie Goodhouse doesn’t need to be warned about bad boys; good sense and an abusive ex have given her plenty of reasons to play it safe. But when she steps into her new role as outreach librarian for Cousins Correctional Facility, no amount of good sense can keep her mind—or eyes—off inmate Eric Collier.

Eric doesn’t claim to be innocent of the crime that landed him in prison. In fact, he’d do it again if that’s what it took to keep his family safe. Loyalty and force are what he knows. But meeting Annie makes him want to know more.

When Eric begins courting Annie through letters, they embark on a reckless, secret romance—a forbidden fantasy that neither imagines could ever be real…until early parole for Eric changes everything, and forces them both to face a past they can’t forget, and a desire they can’t deny.

Rachel's Thoughts:
Hard Time was an unexpectedly beautiful and sensual romance.  This is my first Cara McKenna but it definitely won’t be my last!

Annie has had her view of love shattered by an ex-boyfriend who abused her.  She left him after, but the effects of the relationship have lingered on.

Sometimes I worried my ex had hit me so hard he broke the desire center of my brain. Nope, I thought, sliding my key into the ignition. He just knocked the trust right out of you.

After graduating college Annie moves away from home to put her degree to use as a librarian in Darren, Michigan, a dark depressing city in financial decline. Yet, it’s a place where Annie’s life is about to change and blossom. As part of the job the library has a prison outreach program bringing books to inmates. This is where she meets Eric, the darkly handsome and potentially dangerous convict who immediately draws her attention and awakens desires long thought dead.  In spite of his incarceration Eric is a somewhat safe relationship for Annie, he’s the ultimate look-but-can’t-touch, but his sensual letters are every bit an erotic touch when they start writing to each other.

Is their relationship just the product of circumstances or will it be able to thrive when/if Eric gets released?  Does Annie want it to? Can Eric be a safe person to involve herself with? All of these are questions Annie asks.  I was hoping for a yes to all of them!

Hard Time was a unique erotic story because of the restrictions Annie and Eric are first subject to.  This had some of the best build-up and slow burn I have ever read: those letters!! Oh my! I fell in love with Eric right along with Annie from his beautiful, romantic and seriously HOT letters!  With their situation at first, every glance, every accidental brush, every touch was HUGE and left me zinging! But that was nothing compared to the in person.  Whoa!

When Eric gets released they have to navigate some bumps in the road; it’s not easy sailing and the situation had a realistic feel to it.  Ms. McKenna doesn’t trivialize the serious nature of Eric’s crime or the fact that Annie would be rightfully hesitant.  But their journey is touching and simultaneously steamy! I loved every page! Eric was surprisingly gentle and loving, but incredibly sexy! Annie means the world to him:

“Why’s it always about what I need?”
“Because that’s what gets me off, Annie. Being what you need.”

This is the first time I’ve read anything by Cara McKenna, and I was so taken with her gorgeous and sensual prose! It wasn’t overly flowery just enough to make you swoon and heat up your insides!  If I had anything to compare her writing to it would be Laura Florand’s and I’m always blown away by her words.

Brandie's Thoughts:
This is such a sweet and romantic story - not what you would think you would get from a book where the guy is in prison. And for a lot of readers, I'm sure the prison aspect is a turnoff, or at least causes some hesitation about reading. PLEASE don't let that stop you from picking up this gem. I had never read anything by this author, but was intrigued by the story. And after seeing some really wonderful reviews, I had to give it a try. Imagine my excitement when I was approved for it on Netgalley!

And what a unique, romantic, erotic and just beautiful story this was! I was pulled in by the first page and didn't want to put it down. The writing was incredible and the chemistry between Annie and Eric was off the charts.

Annie is a sweet librarian who's moved to a new state to start over her life, after a really bad experience with her ex boyfriend. Her job as a librarian has many hats and one of her new ones is to spend Fridays at Cousin’s Correctional Facility, reading and helping some of the good behavior inmates.

Eric, one of the inmates, has been in for 5 years, but he's not a bad guy (I know...he's in prison...but keep an open mind). He made a poor decision to get him there and he's learning from his mistakes and trying to be a better man.

The first time Annie spots Eric, she's immediately attracted to him and confused by it. She shouldn't be attracted to a criminal - but her heart wants what it wants. Eric needs some help with his writing and approaches Annie to help him. Thus starts a string of romantic and sexy letters between them.

They carry on with this forbidden relationship until the reality of Eric's future sets in. The possibility of Eric's release is real and can they ever have a lasting relationship outside the walls of Cousin's?

Eric - oh be still my heart! He was all kinds of swoony and romantic and down right SWEET. His heart blew me away and I just melted over him.

Annie was a sweet girl trying not to make a really dumb mistake by falling for the wrong guy, another guy that could hurt her severely. I understood her hesitation and trust issues.

This book was the best mixture of sweetness, romance, & erotica. I loved every single page and could have read their story forever because it just left me with a smile on my face. I immediately went and purchased Unbound by this author because this will not be the last time I read her books!
