Review: One to Protect by Tia Louise

One to Protect (One to Hold, #3)

Publication Date: April 21st 2014 by TLM Productions
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

WARNING: Recommended for adult readers (18+) only. Mature themes, strong language, and sexual content.

One scar.
One betrayal.
No escape.

When Sloan Reynolds beats criminal charges, Melissa Jones stops believing her wealthy, connected ex-husband will ever pay for what he did to her.

Derek Alexander can’t accept that—a tiny silver scar won't let him forget, and as a leader in the security business, he is determined to get the man who hurt his fiancĂ©e.

Then the body of a former call girl turns up dead. She’s the breakthrough Derek’s been waiting for, the link to Sloan’s sordid past he needs. But as usual, legal paths to justice have been covered up or erased.

Derek’s ready to do whatever it takes to protect his family when his partner Patrick Knight devises a plan that changes everything.

It’s a plan that involves coloring outside the lines and taking a walk on the dark side. It goes against everything on which Alexander-Knight, LLC, is based.

And it’s a plan Derek’s more than ready to follow.

Note: Standalone, M/F, HEA.
My Thoughts:
I loved One to Hold, so I was happy to get back to Melissa and Derek in this installment.

Melissa and Derek are engaged with a baby on the way, and madly in love. Intense, passionate, and tender love, but two things hold a little gray cloud over their complete happiness.  First, they’re still living apart, and we’re not talking twenty minutes apart, we’re talking eight-hour-car-ride apart, and they continue to go back and forth about where to live, neither wanting to give up home base.  Second, and more importantly, Sloan, Melissa’s ex is up to no good, and Derek is terrified that it’s only a matter of time before he tries something with Melissa again. With Patrick’s help, Derek sets out to ensnare Sloan and take care of him permanently.

Melissa and Derek’s relationship is loving and passionate, and they could barely keep their hands off each other. I love how there was never any third party in the mix to take away from their bond. I had big issues with Patrick and Elaine’s story, One to Keep, because of that very reason.  Kenny’s (a girl) involvement still bugs me, which I was reminded of when poor Elaine confides in Melissa. I’m hoping Kenny’s book will dispel some of the uneasiness I have about them.

Ms. Louise definitely knows how to write scorching scenes, enough that you’ll need a cold shower more than a few times.  I’m a fan of sexy-times as much as any girl, but there was a LOT of sex in this book.

The issue with Sloan and the way Derek handles things has me very uneasy.  He’s clearly upset about it and I have a hard time believing that Derek and Patrick will come away out of the mess without discovery in some way. Also, I’m a little confused because the way the issue was said to be taken care of in One to Keep is different from One to Protect. Is this a difference in explanation to Melissa and Elaine? I’m not sure, but if that’s the reason, I doubt they won’t somehow find out what really happened. It’s entirely possible I’m just confused.  I guess we shall see.

Overall, it was lovely catching up with Derek and Melissa. Their romance continues to delight.

About the book:
WARNING: Mature themes, strong language and sexual content. Recommended for adult readers (18+) only!

Derek Alexander is an ex-Marine, ex-cop, and the top investigator in his field. Melissa Jones is a small-town girl trying to escape her troubled past.

When the two intersect in a bar in Arizona, their sexual chemistry is off the charts. But what is revealed during their "one week stand" only complicates matters.

Because she'll do everything in her power to get away from the past, but he'll do everything he can to hold her.

Standalone, M/F, HEA.

My Thoughts:
One to Hold is about a powerful, immediate attraction meant only to last one week, but ends up being so much more.  There’s a little danger, mystery, and a whole lot of scorching hot scenes!

Melissa is on a last minute spa vacation with her best friend, Elaine after making a tough decision in her life.  She needs the escape, and one week in Arizona de-stressing is what Elaine ordered.  While sitting in the hotel bar alone the first night, Melissa captures the attention of Derek, a good looking, and imposing man.  He’s taken with her, and she’s overwhelmed by her attraction to someone so unlike her usual type. They share the most passionate, desperate, and intense encounter Melissa has ever experienced.  This couldn’t come at a worse time, a time when Melissa’s personal life is a mess, but Derek and Melissa’s fiery chemistry spark a surprising agreement: Enjoy each other with no strings, no questions, no explanations, and then walk away.  They end up sharing more than they intended and what they didn’t plan on is the deep connection that starts to form.  One thing becomes clear, one week won’t be enough.

My insides bonded to him, melted into him, wrapped around him, holding him to me.  But I couldn’t name what I was feeling.

I never wanted to let him go.

Both Derek and Melissa have more going on behind the scenes, which is slowly revealed throughout the story.  My heart went out to Melissa when all is revealed about her situation, but I was frightened for her as well.  With Derek’s background he’s the perfect man to be in Melissa’s life, although she doesn’t quite know it at first.  I just love a strong, protective male!!

I relished the sizzling chemistry shared by Melissa and Derek, and even though they get together physically fast, they slowly develop a deeper emotional connection which felt believable.  I loved how their backgrounds are slowly revealed and I was eagerly clicking the pages to find out the mysteries behind them.  And the epilogue was just lovely!

Tia Louise’s debut ticked all the boxes for me, and I eagerly await whatever she has in store next! One to Hold was an incredibly sensual, and yet believable romance that will leave you with a satisfied smile in the end. *sigh*

 EXCERPT:

I only had a moment to observe how very clean it was before he had me against the wall, pinned by his huge physique.

“You never came.” His voice was a low, husky whisper. “I waited all night.”

My hands rested on his chest, and heat flamed through me with every heartbeat. My eyes traveled up, up, up to his. They were darkened now, and I was certain he was thinking the same thing as me.

He remembered how fantastically our bodies came together two nights ago. I barely registered him reaching out to lock the door.

“I’m sorry,” was all I could say.

“When you walked in the restaurant tonight… god, you’re so beautiful.” He spoke against my skin as his lips pressed into my brow, his beard roughing my closed eyelids. “Are you feeling bad?”

“No,” I managed to say despite the heat surging through me as his lips moved to my temple. “I... didn't think I could eat.”

“Good,” he said in a thick voice before covering my mouth with his. Mine opened quickly, drawing him in. Our tongues entwined before his lips moved to my jaw then down my neck.

"I thought about you all day.” His breath whispered across my skin, and I couldn't stop a surge of desire low in my stomach. “Will you let me have you here?”

“Yes,” I barely spoke, and he dropped to his knees.

He gathered the thin fabric of my dress, shoving it up to my waist as he caught the side of my thong with his thumb.
