My Thoughts:

Crisis Point, a popular true crime TV show is about to air an episode on the case of Crissy Mellin, a girl who went missing three years earlier and was never found. Beth Collins, a producer for the show, thinks Crissy is only one of several women taken and that the perpetrator is motivated by the Blood Moon, which is set to reappear in four days. Beth flies to Louisianna to meet with John Bowie, one of the detectives on the case, and see if she can prevent the next abduction.

 

John isn’t too thrilled with Beth at first, but he’s been haunted by Crissy’s case and the incidents that happened around it. With the spotlight on the case again, John’s corrupt boss warns him to keep his mouth shut on the matter, but John doesn’t want another girl to suffer the same fate and so he reluctantly works with Beth. There’s an attraction brewing between them from the start!

 

I’ve enjoyed Sandra Brown’s twisty mysteries for some time now, so I was excited to pick up Blood Moon. Romance and suspense combined in just the right amounts to make for a thrilling read! Fast-paced, short chapters hooked me from the start! Both Beth and John had to work against their respective bosses. Beth is trying to put the brakes on the show airing because of the discrepancies they discover, but John’s boss and henchmen held more of an urgent threat! I listened, riveted until the end!

 

Kyf Brewer did an excellent job narrating the story! His rough, masculine voice was perfect for John and I liked his performance of Beth’s voice, as well! His narration definitely enhanced my enjoyment of the story!

My Thoughts:

To the outside world Zach is a washed-up star NFL player, but he’s happy to live out of the spotlight. He was a star quarterback and MVP until he married Rebecca, a glitzy party girl. The marriage was a train wreck and short-lived, but unfortunately her partying ways ended tragically, and Zach was left as medical conservator when she was declared unresponsive and in a vegetative state. Zach felt he was in no position to take her off life support after her parent bitterly contested his rights since he wasn’t her husband at the time.

Four years later Prosecutor Kate Lennon shows up at his door when Rebecca’s convicted attacker, Eban Clarke, has been released early and she needs a way to put him away for good. The only way to do that is with new charges, like murder if Rebecca is taken off life support. Zach wants nothing to do with the whole situation.

Eban Clarke is a rich, spoiled, no-good, sociopath without a speck of remorse for all he’s done. When he hears Kate and Zach may be cooking up a way to send him to prison again, he sets his own plans in motion. This guy was a piece of work and his POV filled me with dread!

Of course, there’s a romance, ill-advised because of the circumstances, but the heat between Zach and Kate was hard to ignore. Stolen moments of passion are interspersed in between looking for a way to put Eban away for good, and trying to stay alive. Never a dull moment! 

I’m always sucked right in from the first page, as I was with Overkill, clamoring for more with her cliffhanger-like chapter endings. Overkill was fast-paced, full of action and rounded out with a steamy romance. Zach was Ms. Brown’s kind of standard hero, a man’s man, and a little bit of an asshole at the beginning, and I loved him! Kate was a likable heroine, smart with a passion for justice, which I understood once getting to know her background.

Sandra Brown is one of my all-time favorite mystery/romantic suspense writers! I eagerly look forward to her new releases, but I’ve gone back and read and enjoyed a lot of her back list, too. Highly recommended!

My Thoughts:

Blind Tiger takes us back to 1920’s when the country is just recovering from the Great War and Prohibition is law. Running moonshine has become a lucrative and dangerous fact of life and the little Texas town of Foley is full of moonshiners vying for market share.

Thatcher Hutton a soldier on his way home but ends up in Foley. He just wants to make enough money to get back home but is caught up in the disappearance of a woman, bootlegging and intrigued by a headstrong widow, Laurel Plummer. The minute he lays eyes her he’s drawn in even though she’s completely prickly with him.

Young widow Laurel wants to never be completely reliant on a man again. She’s determined to find a way to provide for herself and falls into a dangerous opportunity. Suspicious of Thatcher and yet drawn to him it’s a push and pull of desire between them. They had great chemistry and I knew it just a matter of time before they gave into their attraction.

This was an interesting and volatile period in history, and even though the story was a little slow going at first, I was immediately engrossed. Sandra Brown’s short chapters that usually end with a bit of a cliffhanger sucked me right in, and as usual there were a few surprising twists and turns, a feature I love about her writing!  I didn’t want to put it down and ended up putting off another book I planned to read so I finish!

My Thoughts:

Arden is back in her small hometown after twenty years to find answers. A half million-dollar heist, a murder, and her father’s disappearance has left her with a lot of questions. Her reappearance doesn’t go unnoticed and unfortunately her return draws the attention of a nefarious person from the past. Does Arden know more about the theft and where the money went? Well, that speculation spells danger for Arden.

Ledge has had his own trouble in this little Texas town, but he’s paid his due taking military service in lieu of a jail term and come back home a hero. Mostly he keeps to himself, only staying in town to keep an eye out for his ailing uncle, but with Arden back the past comes back into full focus, and the trouble he’s managed to avoid comes roaring back up. Arden has no idea the hornet’s nest her presence stirs up, but Ledge knows, and he makes it his mission to keep her out of trouble’s sights.

I love Sandra Brown’s twisty mysteries! Her “heroes” are far from perfect, skirting the edge of right and wrong at times, but at the heart of things are good. Ledge is cast from that mold, and I couldn’t help but root for him! Oh, Ms. Brown writes the sexiest heroes! Ledge was raw masculinity, gruff, and not concerned with winning any popularity contest. Ledge and Arden are oil and water at first, yet the sparks of attraction fly between them making for a delicious push and pull until they finally succumb to irresistible forces!

I think it’s best to go in with any Sandra Brown with minimal knowledge and let her take you on a ride.   Keeps you hooked, she’s the queen of the cliffhanger chapter, and a twisty surprise or two! She kept me on the edge of my seat, and I usually end reading her stories straight through because I just have to know how it all turns out! She’s on my list of auto-buys and I think any suspense/thriller/romance fan will gobble Thick as Thieves up like I did!

My Thoughts:

As the book description points out, Drex is sure he’s found Weston Graham, now going by Jasper Ford, a man he thinks is responsible for the disappearance of eight or more wealthy women over the years.  Weston befriends them, and then they, along with their money disappear without a trace.  Jasper has married a rich, younger woman, Talia, and Drex is determined to snare Jasper before any harm comes to her.

Drex Easton was like most of Ms. Brown’s heroes, very male, hot blooded and a little rough around the edges. Yum! It was no wonder sparks flew between Talia and Drex the minute they laid eyes on each other.  Their relationship at first was attraction laced with a little hostility, because Drex isn’t sure that Talia isn’t an accomplice, he goes back and forth with his feelings for her.  Talia is attracted, but of course, she’s married to Jasper, yet, Talia something seems off with Jasper, especially since Drex came into their life.  Jasper welcomes Drex into their lives, inviting him to dinner and such, but their exchanges are on the adversarial side, and Talia isn’t sure what’s going on. Is it a male pissing match or something more sinister? 

The story sucked me in right away, each chapter ending on sort of mini cliffhanger, so it pained me when I had to put the book down!  Outfox was signature Sandra Brown, an addictive mystery, combustible romance, and a few twists sure to surprise! The last reveal was a total shock I didn’t see coming, but I loved how everything turned out!

My Thoughts:

You get the gist of the story from the book description, so I won’t regurgitate the details in my review.  I can tell you the story was pretty addictive, with a few of Sandra Brown’s usual twists, but I did find a few scenes a bit tedious. I felt they should’ve wrapped up or got to the point much sooner.  Still, I really enjoyed the mystery, was on the edge worrying about our characters, and I liked the connection between Rye and Brynn. They got to know each other in bits and pieces while determining just how much they could trust each other. Their relationship/romance was antagonistic off and on throughout, but never doubt that Sandra Brown can create some palpable chemistry, and sizzling sex scenes!  

I listened to Tailspin during one our long stretches of driving on our Pacific Northwest coastal vacation.  It made the time go by quickly and allowed me to take in the scenery (the Fall colors were beautiful!) while my husband drove.  He said driving didn’t seem to take nearly as long (9 ½ hours one of those days!) because of the captivating story.

On a side note, Victor Slezak narrated the story, and he’s a regular narrator for Sandra Brown novels.  His style of narration makes a lot of the male characters sound like rednecks (not to be offensive!), I think more than they were actually meant to be. I’m used to his narration, but my husband said it made some of the story feel corny.

Quick Update & Giveaway

Hi there readers! I hope all have had wonderful summer trips, lots of fun! Maybe visiting a beach like the one pictured above! 

I haven't been reviewing that much lately, just here and there so I thought I'd catch you up on some books I've enjoyed the last few weeks:

       

    

So you can see, I've been all over the place with romances, from historical to romantic suspense/mystery to PNR.  I finally broke down and read a Nalini Singh! The first of the Psy-Changeling series (I guess there's 15 out now!) and I really enjoyed it!  I listened to the audio version, courtesy of the library and the narration was excellent. Actually, most of the books you see above were audio books for me, except for Cowboy Christmas Miracle and Gone Too Deep.  

Smoke Screen (5 Stars) by Sandra Brown was better than Smash Cut (3.5 Stars) for me.  The couple in Smash Cut (or I should say, heroine) didn't fully trust or confide until the very end so that was a mark against their romance for me. Still, it's hard to beat Sandra Brown's books even when its not her best work. She is the queen of a twists!  

I'm making my way through J.R. Ward's BDB series.  Lover Unbound was good, but I had just a tinge of disappointment over how she managed to make Jane and Vishous' romance a (Highlight for Spoiler) long term, given that Jane is human when they fall in love.  I know it had to be accomplished somehow, but I didn't want that.  Oh well. I've read later books and I would've never known, just thought she was normal if I didn't read this installment, so I need to stop bitching! (End of Spoiler).

I'm continuing on with Elizabeth Hoyt's Maiden Lane series and the Virgin River series by Robyn Carr and loving both! I can't get enough of the Virgin River series, where I get to visit with all my favorite couples while enjoying a new romance with each installment.  Although, I must say I wanted to smack Mel a time or two in Moonlight Road! I need to be a little more understanding because it's not like I haven't had emotions that make me a bit crazy, too! 

A Cowboy Christmas Miracle is not to be missed by anyone who loves a sexy, sweet cowboy! Carolyn Brown finishes up her Burnt Boot, Texas series with this book, and I just melted over Declan! Gone Too Deep by Katie Ruggle is my favorite in the series so far! I've been on many a backpacking trip, so I could relate to all the hard work, and "enjoy" the beauty of untouched wilderness! It was a thrilling mystery, and I loved the sweet, innocent nature of the romance. My jaw just dropped with that ending! I'm reading the next one very soon.

Rachel's Thoughts:

If you’re a fan of a well-plotted mystery, one with twists and turns look no further, Sandra Brown is the author for you. Since reading Mean Streak I’ve gone back and read several of Ms. Brown’s backlist, all wonderful and twisty, but Mean Streak continues to be my favorite story of the lot.  The mystery is just part of the appeal.  The highlight for me was the romance, of course! Oh-so-steamy and intense!

While training for a marathon on a deserted hiking trail, Dr. Emory Charboneau hits her head and is knocked out, and then wakes up in an unfamiliar cabin with no recollection of how she got there. There is a mysterious, and less than forthcoming stranger caring for her, but it’s unclear whether he’s dangerous or not or whether he’ll let her go once she’s well enough to leave.  He’s ruggedly handsome, ruff around the edges, and he stirs up both excitement and fear in Emory.

I think Mean Streak is best enjoyed by reading as little as possible about the plot beforehand.  There are exciting twists and turns and spoiling any of those would ruin the fun. Some made me gasp in surprise!  Each chapter ending was like a mini-cliffhanger making it painful to put the book down at any point, or for any length of time. I will tell you that I adored the romance! It was lusty, and it made my heart race! 

“But here’s a warning, Doc. You give me another opportunity to put my hands on you, and I’m going to put them all over you. Got it? I’m not going to imagine you naked, I’m gonna see you naked. Offer yourself up again, and I’ll ignore every reason why I shouldn’t fuck you.”

Oh, my!

I’m a long-time reader of mysteries and I was surprised when I found out who was behind it all. I should’ve seen it, but I didn’t.  Mean Streak was a well-crafted, thrilling mystery with a romance that made me a little weak in the knees!  A definite recommend!

Brandie's Thoughts:
It has been years since I picked up a Sandra Brown book, and I don't remember them being so full of mystery and suspense. But was I in for a treat when I started reading this one! I was immediately pulled into the story and had a hard time putting it down. It's fast-paced and suspenseful, with some romantic and sexy elements thrown in. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.In order to be surprised about all of the mysteries that unfold throughout the book, I think you need to start reading without knowing too much about it. The synopsis does a great job of giving you an idea, without giving away the goods. I don't want to do a full length review and ruin the story for anyone, so I'll just say that it's a fantastic romantic suspense that I couldn't put down. And I love when I don't figure out the twist before the end! If you get the chance to read this one, I highly recommend it!

Sandra Brown is the author of more than sixty New York Times bestsellers, including DEADLINE(2013), LOW PRESSURE (2012), LETHAL (2011), TOUGH CUSTOMER (2010), SMASH CUT (2009), SMOKE SCREEN (2008), PLAY DIRTY (2007), RICOCHET (2006), CHILL FACTOR (2005), WHITE HOT (2004), & HELLO, DARKNESS (2003).

Brown began her writing career in 1981 and since then has published over seventy novels, bringing the number of copies of her books in print worldwide to upwards of eighty million. Her work has been translated into over thirty languages.

A lifelong Texan, Sandra Brown was born in Waco, grew up in Fort Worth and attended Texas Christian University, majoring in English. Before embarking on her writing career, she worked as a model at the Dallas Apparel Mart, and in television, including weathercasting for WFAA-TV in Dallas, and feature reporting on the nationally syndicated program “PM Magazine.”

In 2009 Brown detoured from her thrillers to write, Rainwater, a much acclaimed, powerfully moving story about honor and sacrifice during the Great Depression.

Brown recently was given an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from Texas Christian University. She was named Thriller Master for 2008, the top award given by the International Thriller Writer’s Association. Other awards and commendations include the 2007 Texas Medal of Arts Award for Literature and the Romance Writers of America’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
