Sunday Post #75

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated reviewer book blog, and is a post to recap my bookish and non-bookish things from the last week.

I went on a mini hike today, but the views were beautiful. It was hot! Things are still pretty much locked down except for beaches and more parks opening up. I think they're getting close to opening up where I live, though. The only good thing about Covid-19 is my commute to work has been a dream! It's been taking me about 35-40 minutes to get to work when it used to take me an hour. I'll be sorry when traffic goes back to normal.

Read:
(Click on cover for Goodreads link:)

All three reads were a hit.  It was my second time through Smoke Bitten on audio.  My husband is a big fan of the Mercy Thompson series as well so we listened to the newest on audio on a long drive up to Northern California the week before last.

Received/Purchased/Library Lend:
(Click on cover for Goodreads link:)

All the above are library lends, all audio. I hope I have enough time to get through them all before my time expires. I really only requested Fantastic Hope for Asil's story (from Patricia Briggs' Alpha & Omega series), but I've started Zombie Dearest (short Anita Blake story) to see if I like Laurel K. Hamilton's writing. I'm also listening to The Reckless Oath We Made and enjoying it.

Watched:

Pretty good adaptation. Had me laughing and I loved this Mr. Knightly!

How was your week?

  1. My husband is loving the reduced commute times at the moment too. I'm not back in the office for a long time to come but I like how quiet the roads are when I go pick up the food shop etc.

Asil broke my heart in Alpha and Omega! His poor mate... I hope good things are coming his way in the short story.
I need to get caught up with the Mercy read alone again. I've fallen a book (or two) behind.

The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires seems to be cropping up everywhere at the moment. It sounds amusing but I'm not a fan of the cover, lol. Hope you enjoy it!

    1. Nice that you get to work from home for a while to come. It's better if you can.

I sooo want a happy story for Asil! I hope she writes in a love interest for him soon! Especially since the the events of the last book. I thought that maybe a romance was in the cards for him and Sage but...

  2. Looks like it was worth taking the heat to see all that! I have been seeing a lot of articles, speculating that many businesses will not return to full-time in the office, since there will be a need for social distancing in the physical office for quite a while. Maybe your commute with say pretty decent.

    1. It was beautiful. I just should've gone a bit earlier. Let's hope so!

  3. Yes Rachel, the quiet roads have been one blessing of this pandemic and lockdown! My journey to work - for two days this week - was like a dream. I have been re-reading the stunning, modern-classic, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier and watching lots of TV shows and films!

I hope the coming week is a good one for you. Happy reading and take care. 🙂

    1. Glad you're enjoying that facet of the pandemic, too! Enjoy Rebecca! I've read it, but enjoy the Alfred Hitchcock version even more. What a classic thriller! I hope you have a lovely week, too! :)

  4. Oh yes, the roads are much better to drive, even though we are going out only for essentials for now. I hope you all stay in and safe!

  5. I thought about picking up Emma at the redbox, and then I was painfully reminded that I do not have a tv in my apartment nor a laptop that takes disk, lol..it's all renting on YOUtube for me, till I figure out something better.

  6. Pretty view! I loved The Southern Book Club's Guide. I didn't want to put it down, which is saying something with my current attention span. I'm excited for Emma. It looks like a fun version. Happy reading!

  7. Beautiful views on your hike! Less traffic is definitely one silver lining of what's been happening. I', so glad you're enjoying The Reckless Oath We Made. Greenwood has such a gift at developing unique, flawed, complex, unforgettable characters. (And yes that was a lot of adjectives. lol)

    1. I'm really loving it, but it's taking a while to get through it just because of being busy in real life.

  8. My husband was loving his quick commute as well - until things reopened a bit more last week and it went back to before. Lol.

I really want to read The Southern Book Club's Guide! And watch the new Emma.

      Hope you love them.

  9. Oh gosh, nearly an hour for commute sounds awful. I would not be wishing for that to come back. LOL Lovely view on your hike though!! And I'm super curious about The Southern Book Club novel - I hear mixed things, but I feel like I'd enjoy it!!

    1. Yeah, not so fun but I do get through a lot of audios because of it.

I'm really curious about it too. Usually the books I listen to with my hubby are ones I've already listened to and I know they're good, but I'll be taking a chance and hoping we both love TSBCG. We'll see.

Oooh! Hope you love Briggs! It's one of my all-time favorites and this is even after reading both series' 2xs through. I'm currently working my way through Mercy a 3rd time. Enjoy! :)

  15. We're a cool 65 degrees today...and we'll be at a very warm 98 degrees by Saturday. Ahh...spring in Utah. ;D My library is finally opening up for curbside checkouts this week which makes me very happy. Hope you have a lovely Memorial Day!!!

  16. A couple of people I know said the same thing about the commute and how it was nice that no one was on the roads for a while.

  18. I'll be going back in to work this week after working from home to last 10 weeks. I'm very ready to be back, but also a bit anxious about what to expect.

We lost my elderly aunt this week, so the family is grappling with planning a memorial that adheres to all the guidelines. Normally this would be a very largely attended service. She just had so many friends! She had been ill for a while now, so I take comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering at least.

    1. That will be strange, but I know most people are tired of being at home. Hope they arrange things for your safety!

I'm so sorry for your loss and that you and your family are able to properly say goodbye.

  20. Yes, summer hikes can give a beautiful view, but the heat can sure tap the energy. Oh my yes, an easier commute is definitely a perk. :) Glad you loved your three read/listens this week. That Southern Book Club has my attention so I'll look forward to what you think. I've also got the Fantastic Hope just for the Patricia Briggs story, but I did want to test drive the others too.

Haha, I had a blast with this Emma adaption. Bill Nighy as Mr. Woodhouse was pretty different, but he cracked me up. Yes, delicious Mr. Knightley.

    Happy Memorial Day weekend, Rachel!

  22. I am so glad that I live 3.5 miles from my workplace. I remember when I had an hour commute and it isn't fun. I loved the audio of The Reckless Oath We Made and hope you do as well. I actually liked almost all of the stories in Fantastic Hope but the Asil story was worth picking up the book by itself. I hope you have a wonderful week, Rachel!

    1. No it isn't fun, but I mostly like the place I work at and that isn't always the case. I just want to retire to be honest.

I should give the other stories a go. I read the Anita Blake and while it was interesting her having multiple lovers isn't my thing so I probably won't be picking the series up. Loved the Asil story, but I was also disappointed. I was hoping for a romance for him after everything he's been through.

      Thanks Carole! You, too!
