Sunday Post #212

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated reviewer book blog, and is a post to recap my bookish and non-bookish things from the last week. I'm also linking up to The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb Nance @Readerbuzz.

It's been a sort of quiet week. My husband was gone Monday-Wednesday for business so it was just me and Peanut. Peanut decided I needed cheering up apparently, because he killed a squirrel and left the mangled remains in my bedroom on Wednesday. He really brings me the nicest gifts...

I came home from work to see a deer had nipped off buds on a several plants that are supposed to be deer resistant. It was a new buck so I'm guessing he took a nibble not knowing if he liked the plant or not. I blocked off the planter with ladders and mesh wire until we could rig up the fencing we had planned on installing. My husband put the fencing up today (Saturday) and I sprayed plants with deer/rabbit mace on plants where there's no fencing. Plants that are supposed to be deer resistant. I guess that's part of living in the country. I do enjoy seeing the deer even if they can be a pain.

Another great reading week. One 5 star (Remember Me) and three 4 star books.

Received/Purchased/Library Lend:

I grabbed a library audio copy of Beautifully Broken Life after seeing Tanya's review. I have an e-copy of Trapped but somehow I don't have the audio. Thankfully my library had an audio copy and I'm listening now as I'm set to review it for Anne's read along. Bittersweet in the Hollow is an invite and YA. I don't read much YA anymore but it sounded good. We'll see.

Instagram:

I don't know why, but I couldn't get Instagram to embed here. Instead, I'll share a photo of my running trail blooming with wild sweet pea:

How was your week?

  1. I'm guessing no one told the deer that the plants were deer-resistant. Love the photo - a very scenic trail. Have a great week :)

  2. Oh my gosh! Peanut lol. that's quite a gift. :)

And the deer resistant... yes I imagne that can be challenging out in the country. They are beautiful to have around but they can do damage too. My dad used to have them on his property quite a lot and they could be a pain ha.

    Beautiful trail!

    1. Thanks! Yes, Peanut is my killer cat gifting me with all kinds of presents lately! He can go in and out through our cat door during the day so I never know what to expect. He's grounded at night though! Yes, the males have been aggressive too. Still, beautiful. Thanks Greg! :)

  3. Even though I live in a subdivison, my lot backs up to a preserve area and we occasionally have deer wander into the backyard. I love seeing them and there's nothing back there for them to ruin. (I don't garden or plant anything. lol) Usually it's just one or two, but one time we had ten deer in the yard! I was standing at the windows absolutely transfixed.

Aw, I'm so happy to see the Catherine Cowles book! I do hope you'll enjoy it!

    1. They are beautiful to see and I'm thankful they're plentiful out here. I enjoy their visits when they're not munching on my new blooms, lol! How lovely you get visits too!

I'm sure I will! I've enjoyed her in the past. :)

  4. We don't have deer on our residential area but we have lots of hungry rabbits, chipmunks, and squirrels and they do damage to the gardens as well. Sigh! Have a good week.

    1. Yes, the rabbits and squirrels can be destructive too! Rabbits nibble. I've been spraying a natural repellent that works for deer and rabbits. It's peppery and minty and they seem to steer clear. Squirrels love to bury acorns in the yard leaving bumps all over, but they haven't been as much of a nuisance lately I suspect because my cat chases them off. They're risking their life visiting our yard! You too, Harvee! :)

  5. Somebody should really check with the deer before declaring anything deer resistant. LOL. Though a mangled squirrel is not ideal, at least you are loved, right? I never heard of that YA book (though I am not up on them these days). I like the sound of the magical element and points for the setting.

    1. Lol! The deer didn't get the memo, apparently! I know, he really does mean well with his gifts! I don't usually pick up YA anymore but it was offered and I checked out some reviews and the description and it sounds promising. I hope I like it.

  6. I'm not sure what is eating my young pecan tree's leaves. It looks like some sort of animal.

You have certainly got a lot of good books to choose from this week!

    And thank you, Peanut!

    1. I wonder if it's birds or squirrels? They nibble too. Yes, thank you Peanut the killer cat, lol! He does love me as much as I love him I think/hope, lol. :)

  7. That naughty little deer! Maybe he decided he didn't like it and won't be back. Our neighborhood is full of hungry bunnies. I agree that Bittersweet in the Hollow sounds good. I took a chance and preordered it during a B&N sale. I love stories set in Appalachia. Enjoy your week!

    1. Yes! Very naughty, lol! The boys have still been making the rounds, but I think they figured out they didn't like some of the plants. We'll see. Bittersweet does sound good! I hope we both love it. It sounds like the perfect spooky fall read. I look forward to your thoughts! You too!

  8. That trail is gorgeous! I might actually go for a run if I had that to run down. or walk even.

Bittersweet in the Hollow sounds awesome!

  9. At least Peanut didn't eat it. I have 2 dogs who don't leave them as gifts-they swallow them while I chase them around trying to get them to drop it. Its not my favorite game. Enjoy your books!

    1. I'm not sure if he ate some of it. Only the bottom half was on my bedroom floor! Eeeek!

  10. I would enjoy seeing the deer too, I would probably be planting things just for them so they would come around. If we had bunnies around here I would probably do the same thing. Oh no about the squirrel that would freak me out.

    1. Love bunnies! They are so cute. I saw more of them where we lived in Southern California. The deer are beautiful too.

    1. Thanks, Lark! Peanut, my cat is a stealthy hunter. At least he likes to think so, haha! You too! :)

  14. Yeah, the deer are beautiful and I love seeing them. But seeing them eat my plants, not so much. Last summer one got in the yard while we were away and ate all the flowers in the planters on my deck. I was not happy.

    1. Oh, that's a bummer! They're so quick too! Yes love seeing them, but not by my plants, lol!

  15. Play for Me sounds good! The running trail is pretty even if I would not be running. Maybe just hiking it. So glad my dogs are not outside without me so they don't bring me stuff. Although one of them did find a dead baby bunny under a bush in the backyard one time. Hope you have a good week!

    1. I do walk it sometimes if I'm tired or it's hot. Yeah, my cat brings in all kinds of "fun" things because he has free reign to come and go during the day through the cat door. He is grounded at sunset, though. You too, Lisa!

  16. Quiet weeks are normally the best! I love deer but I also don't have plants or anything for them to nibble on haha So happy that you loved the Mary Balogh. I hope you end up loving that Catherine Cowles, her books are so so good.

  17. The deer always feasted on my hostas in central NY... they sampled pretty much anything they could get close to though, deer-resistant or not. Hope the fence protects your plants. The running trail is so pretty!!

    1. Bummer! They sampled some of mine too and spit them out!! I was not pleased, but what can you do? We must co-exist and I do think they're beautiful.

  18. We are in the suburbs and the deer are here also. Our suburb has also seen bears this year! I'm thinking maybe I need to spray the sides of the beds in addition to the patio furniture cushions. Our backyard is fenced though. That doesn't deter the squirrels though. I finished Trapped this week. I can't wait to hear your thoughts.

    1. Bears?! Yikes! We have them up here too, but I haven't see any yet. Those pesky squirrels! Too bad we don't have Oberon to chase them off. My cat has been keeping them out of the yard. Mostly anyhow. I read it almost ten years ago, but it's coming back to me as I listen.

  20. Peanut, you really shouldn't have. Ha! Our tulips have always been deer victims, but like you, I still like to see them come around.

Yay for a great reading week. I loved Remember Me, Play for Me, and A Fatal Illusion. I'll be starting Trapped soon. I'll look forward to catching your review over at Anne's
    Have a great week, Rachel!
