Audiobook Review: Out of the Shadows by Allison Brennan

Out of the Shadows (Angelhart Investigations #1.5) by Allison Brennan

Out of the Shadows (Angelhart Investigations #1.5) by Allison Brennan
Publication Date: August 12th 2025 by Harlequin Audio
Pages: 201
Audio Book Length: 5hrs 5min
Narrator: Hillary Huber

Rating: ½

My Thoughts:
Logan Monroe hires Angelhart Investigations when his sister Laura and her two kids are run off the road and she finds her house has been tossed in a break in. Jack Angelhart and his siblings, Margo and Luisa, as well as their mother are all in on the investigation. Jack is more front and center, as opposed to Margo like in the previous books.

Out of the Shadows starts off with a bang and was an exciting, action-packed crime procedural that I listened to straight through! I was hanging on every word as the Angelhart clan tried to locate Laura’s ex-husband and figure out why they were targeted. There was a bit of romance between Jack and Laura as they’re thrown together with Jack sticking close to her family while there’s a threat at large.

I feel you could read/listen to this as a standalone, as it’s focused more on Jack and Laura, and the mystery does wrap up, but you’d miss out on the history and connections that spill into this story.

I was pleased to see Logan, Laura’s brother, a character from the first book, show up again. His ex, Brittany (a piece of work!), is in the story as well, and it makes me wonder if they’ll be in the next book.

Hillary Huber is one of my favorite narrators, so I was thrilled she’s continuing with the series! Her narration definitely enhanced the story as she seamlessly performed all voices: male and female in a variety of ages with a range of emotions!

Logan Monroe’s family is in danger. After his sister, Laura, and her kids are run off the road and their house is broken in to, Logan tasks the Angelharts with keeping them safe, and the PIs drop everything to take on the case.

But they quickly realize there’s more to the situation than anyone thinks. First, the burglars didn’t take anything—were they just trying to scare her or were they after something they didn’t find? Then Laura can’t reach her ex-husband, who was supposed to take the kids for the weekend. While Jack protects the family, Margo tries to find the ex…but he seems to have disappeared.

As she digs deeper, Margo uncovers someone hiding in the shadows who will do anything to get what he wants—including killing anyone who stands in his way.

My Thoughts:
The sixth installment of the Quinn & Costa series was an intense one and fast paced! The story starts out with two murders on opposite sides of the country, committed in the same puzzling way, happening within hours of each other. Havenwood, a previously unknown community, cult-like in its setup, is at the heart of the investigation. Figuring out its past and location becomes key to stopping their murder spree. Calliope, the leader, was something else! I felt for her daughter, Riley, who becomes a crucial part of the team’s investigation.

I was happy at the personal progress made with Kara and Matt, with Kara finally opening up, which has been a long time coming. Catherine who’s been a thorn in Kara’s side from the beginning, and pretty much a witch, IMO, has finally acknowledged some important things! I haven’t been a fan of Catherine at all, so hopefully this progress will move her into the likeable category in the future.

Love this series, and really anything Allison Brennan writes! I recommend starting with book one.

Book Description:

No matter how far you run, some pasts never let you go…

Two people were murdered—at the exact same time, in the same gruesome manner, bodies covered in the same red poppies…but on opposite sides of the country.

With Detective Kara Quinn investigating in Oregon and Special Agent Matt Costa in Virginia, the Mobile Response Team digs deep to uncover more about each victim. What is the link between the two, and why were they targeted?

Yet their search unearths more questions than answers—until they meet Riley Pierce, the only person still alive who might be able to help them find the killers.

Soon, it becomes clear this case is nothing like they’ve seen before as their investigation leads them to the hallowed grounds of Havenwood—an eerily beautiful place rooted in a terrifying past.

As more bodies turn up, all tied to the same community, Kara and Matt are desperate to piece the puzzle together before Havenwood’s leader sacrifices everything to keep her secrets buried.

My Thoughts:
Margo Angelhart, a private investigator, helps a woman escape her abusive husband who happens to be in law enforcement. Margo knows he’ll connect the dots eventually and is on alert. Margo has another case where a wife suspects her husband of cheating, but some of the information the wife relayed doesn’t add up. During her surveillance, Margo runs into her brother, Jack, and her sister, Tessa staking out the same house and it becomes apparent their cases intersect.

The situation is complicated since she and her mother, Ava, had a falling out. However, the Angelhart Investigations was one that Ava and Margo planned out together. Working with the family again shows Margo how much she misses them and how well they work as a team.

Both cases held my attention! I was worried for Margo with the state-trooper hell-bent on finding his wife, knowing Margo was in his sights. The guy was awful and unhinged! The mystery with the cheating husband had a lot of layers. Not all was as it seemed.

I’m a big fan of Allison Brennan’s mysteries! They’re a wonderful combination of complex characters with mystery and suspense that keep you glued to the pages eager to find out how things turn out! I really liked this new series and all the characters! Margo and her brother Jack especially! Margo’s ex, Rick, played a role, and it’s clear their relationship is still unfinished.

The cause of the rift between Margo and her mother was revealed, but most of the details are still unknown. I imagine this will be a continuing story arc in the coming installments. It was clear that the family is close-knit and love each other, though. I look forward to seeing how all these plots play out and look forward to the next mystery!

Book Description:

Nothing brings family together like crime.

Working alone as a private investigator is tough. Estranged from her PI family, Margo Angelhart does what she must to get by—including taking on sordid cases that pay the bills, even if she’d rather be helping those the justice system has failed.

That is, until a cheating husband case she’s working intersects with her siblings’ corporate espionage investigation, forcing Margo to cooperate with the Angelhart firm. Now, as the siblings compare notes, it’s clear they need to work together before a white-collar crime escalates to murder.

With far more questions than answers and a key suspect on the run, they’ll need the whole family to pitch in. But as they investigate the ever-twisting mystery, Margo isn’t sharing everything. Can she learn to trust her family and heal their once-close relationship before her secrets put those she loves most in danger?

Blog Tour Review: The Missing Witness by Allison Brennan

The Missing Witness (Quinn & Costa #5) by Allison Brennan

My Thoughts:
Kara Quinn has been called back to Los Angeles to testify in the case against David Chen, a human trafficker.  Months ago, Kara went undercover to expose David Chen’s operation, bringing women in from China for forced labor in LA sweatshops. However, things go terribly wrong the night of the raid and Kara’s informant as well as her partner Colton are murdered. Kara was forced to relocate as David Chen put a price on her head. After assisting Matt Costa and his FBI Mobile Response Team back in the first installment, Matt arranged for Kara to come work for him on loan from the LAPD.

Now with the case against David Chen finally going to trial Kara’s days with the Mobile Response Team may be coming to an end. However, when Chen is shot the whole case starts to come undone. Kara, Matt, and Michael must piece together why Chen was killed and the plot is more complex and deeper than they imagined. Homeless assistance programs, corrupt city officials, leaks in the Los Angeles FBI office factor into their investigation. Plus, FBI Agent Bryce Thornton is still gunning for Kara's badge. They have an ugly history.

The Missing Witness was a crime procedural with many layers. Kara reunites with the LAPD, and it’s bittersweet for her. This is what Kara’s been working toward, a chance to get her life and career back in LA, but things aren’t as she imagined. Kara’s become attached to working with Matt and his team of agents, solving cases all over the US. She’s become attached to Matt as well, albeit reluctantly.  Matt’s been a steady rock for Kara as she works through relationship issues. I’ve enjoyed seeing them draw closer.

Living in California, I’m disheartened to hear the story is based in part on the homeless crisis here. So many of the facts defy logic! More details from Ms. Brennan: The Story Behind the story: The Missing Witness.

I love Allison Brennan’s brand of mystery/crime procedurals! She blends complex characters, their relationships, and current topics into a riveting mystery! I breezed right through, glued to the pages, eager to see how it all turned out! I’ve grown attached to all the characters on Matt’s team, each being fleshed out a little more with each installment. The series is best read in order.

My Thoughts:
Sixteen-year-old Kristen and eleven-year-old Ryan escaped their criminal family with their godfather, Tony, five years ago. Since then, they’ve been living under the radar, Tony posing as their dad. Tony’s prepared for them to run if they’re discovered and has all the plans in place. Unfortunately, Tony spots the bad guys with little time to spare and with a wicked blizzard on route.

They end up crashing the small plane in the Montana wilderness and must hike out to their safe house. The bad guys are in pursuit, but there are a few good people out to help them: their aunt Ruby, a former marine and tough lady ready to risk it all for them, Nick Lorenzo, owner of Triple Pine Ranch and Tony’s employer/friend, and Sheriff Kate Paxton.  These people had big hearts and couldn’t be bought by Kristen’s criminal family.

North of Nowhere started off with a bang and was action-packed all the way through! I was on the edge of my seat! I needed to know these kids would be safe! Being lost in the Montana wilderness as a terrible blizzard beats down on them was intense, but they were being pursued by hired gunmen and their father, a criminal and murderer on top of everything else. Even worse in my opinion was their evil grandmother! The thought of Kristen and Ryan back with her sent terror into my heart!

I admired Kristen, being tough and determined at such a young age. She cared about her brother so much. Ryan was a sweet, smart kid with a hearing impairment that didn’t seem to hold him back. I rooted for Kristen and Ryan, and I was happy they had good people on their side!

I’m a big fan of Allison Brennan’s mystery/thrillers and this stand-alone did not disappoint! It was the perfect combo of action, suspense, and likeable characters. Also, more than a few unlikable characters!
North of Nowhere was one heck of a page-turner!

I alternately read an e-copy and listened to the audio version. I highly recommend either format! Eliza Foss’s performance was excellent! I’ve enjoyed her performance in the past, most notably narrating Allison Brennan’s Max Revere series. I love her rich voice! I listened to my usual 1.5x normal speed and sometimes a little higher when things got intense.

Book Description:

New York Times bestseller Allison Brennan’s latest standalone is an unputdownable race to the dramatic finish.

After five years in hiding from their murderous father, the day Kristin and Ryan McIntyre have been dreading has arrived: Boyd McIntyre, head of a Los Angeles crime family, has at last tracked his kids to a small Montana town and is minutes away from kidnapping them. They barely escape in a small plane, but gunfire hits the fuel line. The pilot, a man who has been raising them as his own, manages to crash land in the middle of the Montana wilderness. The siblings hike deep into the woods, searching desperately for safety—unaware of the severity of the approaching storm.

Boyd’s sister Ruby left Los Angeles for the Army years ago, cutting off contact in order to help keep her niece and nephew safe and free from the horrors of the McIntyre clan. So when she gets an emergency call that the plane has gone down with the kids inside, she drops everything to try save them.

As the storm builds, Ruby isn’t the only person looking for them. Boyd has hired an expert tracker to find and bring them home. And rancher Nick Lorenzo, who knows these mountains better than anyone and doesn’t understand why the kids are running, is on their trail too.

But there is a greater threat to Kristen and Ryan out there. More volatile than the incoming blizzard, more dangerous than the family they ran from or the natural predators they could encounter. Who finds them first could determine if they live or die. . .

My Thoughts:
Police Detective Beau Herbert is disturbed and frustrated with the St. Augustine Police Department he works for in Louisiana. His investigations and convictions are thwarted at every turn, and he knows there are dirty cops working there so he reaches out to his friend, Michael, one of the members of Matt Costa’s FBI Mobile Response Team for help solving the murders of seven girls, one his crime informant. Michael, Kara, and Matt are kept busy looking for a way in when their help is rebuffed by the police department. They find evidence of corruption and dereliction of duty and, but they have ways to work around, but they have to be careful because it’s obvious someone in power doesn’t want the cases solved.

Each of the team members uses their unique talents to help solve the case, Kara fitting in undercover, Jim with forensics, Matt working the higher ups. It’s an intense situation with all having to watch their backs not knowing who they can trust with law enforcement being involved in the corruption. It was a gripping mystery; one I didn’t want to put down!

Allison Brennan is one of my favorite mystery authors! Seven Girls Gone is the fourth book in the Quinn & Costa series, best read in order to understand the character relationships, like the romance between Matt and Kara. I like that the team is getting closer, appreciating each other’s quirks and talents, and really starting to mesh.  The mystery is wrapped up in a nail-biting, action-packed conclusion! I’m looking forward to the next one!

I alternately read and listened to Seven Girls Gone and recommend either version. The audio was a pleasure to listen to with Suzanne T. Fortin performing. She did an excellent job with all the voices, male and female. I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed.

Review: Don't Open the Door by Allison Brennan

Don't Open the Door (Regan Meritt #2) by Allison Brennan
Publication Date: January 24th 2023 by MIRA
Pages: 384
Source: Publisher
Rating: ½
Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | Goodreads

My Thoughts:
Regan Merritt quit the Marshal service and left town ten months ago after the murder of her son, Chase, and the subsequent unraveling of her marriage.  Her ex, Grant blamed her job for the murder, and the FBI closed the case without satisfying answers.  However, her former partner, Tommy, leaves a message that he’s had some breaks in the case and is close to finding out the truth. Then Regan finds out Tommy’s been murdered right after making the call.

Regan heads back to Virginia determined to find justice for Tommy and her son with the help of the US Marshals office at her back. As Tommy’s laptop and phone were stolen in the assault, Regan has to piece together the clues in other ways. She’s surprised to find out Tommy’s been talking to her ex-husband a lot!

I love Allison Brennan’s mysteries, so I was excited to get more Regan Merritt, the star of her newer mystery series. In the last book, The Sorority Murder, when we meet Regan, she’s back in her childhood home in Arizona, grieving her son’s death, and she’s drawn into an old cold case. Her personal crisis wasn’t at the forefront of that story, but it is here. Sometimes it’s a gradual process, getting to know a character, becoming invested in their story and I really feel Don’t Open the Door solidified that for me with Regan. More than just a police procedural mystery, which was compelling on its own, I cared about the personal lives of her characters, too!

As Regan pieces together the clues it’s apparent she’s getting closer to the truth as she faces danger at every turn. I was nervous for her and a few characters while reading! Definitely a page turner!

Don’t Open the Door was a riveting police procedural, with perfectly imperfect, complex characters! The mystery is solved and while still painful for Regan, I feel like she had to get through this to open her up to other possibilities in the future. I’m excited to discover what’s next for Regan Merritt!

Book Description:

Now she's back after a voice mail from her former boss Tommy said he had important news to share about Chase’s killing. Regan is stunned to learn Tommy is dead too. When she reaches out to Grant, his panicked reaction raises her suspicions. Then a lawyer with ties to her ex also turns up murdered, and the police make Grant their top suspect.

Unsure of his guilt or innocence, Regan risks everything to find Grant before the police do so she can finally get the answers to all that has haunted her since losing Chase. But the truth is not even close to what she imagines—and now she fears she has no one to trust.

Blog Tour Review: The Wrong Victim by Allison Brennan

The Wrong Victim (Quinn & Costa #3) by Allison Brennan
Publication Date: April 26th 2022 by MIRA
Pages: 464
Source: Publisher
Rating: ½

My Thoughts:
Kara Quinn and Matt Costa are investigating a bombing on a boat that killed nine people in Friday Harbor, one of the San Juan Islands off the coast of Seattle. There is no shortage of suspects: the younger wife of a wealthy businessman, an environmental group unhappy with the boating group, and someone from the pilot, a retired FBI agent who was looking into a cold case.

I’m a big fan of Kara and her methods. Her ability to read people and her gut instincts are impressive and she didn’t take unnecessary risks.  I’m rooting for her romance with the team leader, Matt Costa, but they have some hurdles to overcome for things to work out long term. This time around they have Catherine Jones, an FBI forensic psychiatrist joining them on the case. Right away Kara and Catherine clash, with Catherine judging her as reckless and full of herself and she questions Kara’s judgments and actions. I was not a fan of Catherine at all. She seemed to make it her mission to create doubt about Kara and so I was happy to see Kara proved right over and over. Since Catherine has a past with Matt being he dated her sister, Catherine also created a bit of friction between Kara and Matt. I’m happy Matt didn’t let it get out of hand.

The Wrong Victim was an engrossing mystery/crime procedural, one that hooked my attention right away, leading up to an exciting conclusion that had me zipping through the pages to find out how it all turned out! I loved the Pacific Northwest setting, it’s such a beautiful area!

This is the third in the Quinn and Costa series, but I think it would work as a standalone in a pinch. However, I’d recommend starting from the beginning to appreciate the developing relationships. That’s no hardship since every installment is excellent! It’s hard to go wrong with Allison Brennan.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

A bomb explodes on a sunset charter cruise out of Friday Harbor at the height of tourist season and kills everyone on board. Now this fishing and boating community is in shock and asking who would commit such a heinous crime—the largest act of mass murder in the history of the San Juan Islands.

Was the explosion an act of domestic terrorism, or was one of the dead the primary target? That is the first question Special Agent Matt Costa, Detective Kara Quinn, and the rest of the FBI team need to answer, but they have few clues and no witnesses.

Accused of putting profits before people after leaking fuel endangered an environmentally sensitive preserve, the West End Charter company may itself have been the target. As Matt and his team get closer to answers, they find one of their own caught in the crosshairs of a determined killer.

Q&A with Allison Brennan

1.What type of research do you do when thinking of and writing your novel? The Wrong Victim uses both the FBI and local police department, do you speak with individuals who actually work in these fields?

I love research. It started long before I published my first book — I read true crime, watched true crime documentaries, read about current events. Once I was published, I found experts willing to talk to me! In 2008, I participated in the FBI Citizens Academy, and to this day the Public Information Officer (now retired) is happy to answer my questions. I’ve toured Quantico, visited the morgue (twice!) and viewed an autopsy, been on several ride-alongs with local police and sheriff, and have several people across all areas of law enforcement to ask questions. In fact, my oldest daughter is now a police officer, and she’s working on getting me a ride along in a specific precinct where I plan to set a future book. She also connected me with a K-9 officer when I was writing a short story about a retired K-9.

For THE WRONG VICTIM, I reached out to a writer friend of mine who is a retired ATF agent — he was instrumental in helping me with the explosives.

I write fiction and take a lot of liberties with the information I learn. However, I want to be as realistic as possible. To me, as long as what I’m writing is plausible, then I’ll go with it. I write to entertain first and foremost, and sometimes too many forensic details or investigative facts can slow down a story. I’m always seeking to find the right balance.

2. How do you decide where to base your story? This book is based in the San Juan islands and I know Matt Costa’s special team travels.

The premise of the Quinn & Costa mobile response team series is that they are a well-trained group of FBI agents who travel to small, rural, and underserved communities — places where local police may not have the resources to handle a complex investigation such as a serial killer or, in the case of THE WRONG VICTIM, an explosion. So I look for places where setting fits the story. For this book, I had the idea first — a charter boat explodes, who was the intended victim? So that told me I needed a remote, water-based community and looked on a map. The San Juan Islands immediately drew me in, and after reading about the area, I quickly made the decision. I had planned to visit before I wrote the book, but alas, 2020 was not a year for travel, and so I relied on interviews and the internet for information.

3. Do you travel or visit the places you write about first?

If I can, but unfortunately, sometimes that isn’t possible. That’s when research and interviews come in handy!

One of my earlier books, I thought I had researched very well — even talking to people who lived in the region (Seattle) and looking extensively on maps. But I made a mistake about how to get from Point A to Point B and a reader pointed it out. Now I take much more care in making sure I get these details right if I’m writing about a place I don’t know well.

I had wanted to visit the San Juan Islands before writing THE WRONG VICTIM — not just for the book, but because I’d always wanted to go there. Unfortunately, 2020 happened and that wasn’t possible. The book I recently finished writing, the currently untitled fourth Quinn & Costa book, takes place in the bayou in Louisiana. I’ve been to Louisiana many times, and my best friend lives there. While I created a fictional town, I drew upon my personal knowledge and the help of my bestie!

4. How did you come up with your idea for a loaned LA officer who cannot return due to her undercover work?

When I was writing the first Quinn & Costa book, Kara Quinn — the Los Angeles detective on leave — wasn’t going to be a series character. She was going to be a catalyst of sorts for Matt Costa, the team leader. So creating her character, I thought it would be fun to have her as an undercover detective, someone has a unique skill set that would be valuable in Matt’s current investigation.

Well, by the time I finished writing the book, I knew Kara had to return. I just loved her character and felt she had the most growth to do in the series, plus would provide a different perspective to the crimes because of her background. I didn’t know even after I finished writing the book how or why she was going to be on loan to the FBI, I had to sit on that for a few days until I worked out something that made sense to me.

5. How do you decide which books become a series versus a stand alone story?

This is a great question!

For me, all stories — stand alone or series — start with character. Without compelling, interesting, and complex characters, the story falls flat.

In a series, the characters must be interesting enough that readers will want to revisit them and see them in different situations. This is why police procedurals and amateur sleuths truly lend themselves to series books. You like the world, the characters, how they grow over time and want to revisit them over and over and see what’s going on in that world. The same way, I think, television viewers like favorite shows. The plots are interesting and often twisty, but readers (or viewers) really return to find out what happens to the people we’ve grown to love and hate and worry about.

So when I have an idea that is predominately character based — a team of FBI agents, for example — I focus on making those people as real and authentic as possible with an eye toward how they are going to grow and develop over multiple stories. I still want to have a strong plot — so I put them in situations or solving cases that are dangerous or interesting. By the end of the book, I want my characters to learn something about the team or themselves, to grow in some way, however small it might be. I want the series books to stand alone — so new readers can find the books in the middle of the series — while also giving regular readers a character growth arc from book to book.

For a stand alone, while characters are ALWAYS going to be important, they are there for one story only. They need to have a complete character arc from beginning to end so that the reader is fully satisfied at the story conclusion. Plot is important in both types of stories, but in a stand alone the situation/plot provides a stronger framework and backbone than in a series. There is often a universal theme that resonates, that is in some ways bigger than the story itself. Stand alones, at least for me, are about ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances — so readers wouldn’t expect those characters to return in a different story.

My Thoughts:
Lucas Vega is hoping to uncover answers in the cold case of Candace Swain, a fellow college student murdered three years earlier. A homeless man was the main suspect, but Lucas has evidence that suggests otherwise. So far, he’s been railroaded by Candace’s sorority sisters and the Flagstaff Police, but he hopes with the help of Former US Marshall, Regan Meritt, he’ll be to get answers. Lucas has a personal stake in finding the truth, one he doesn’t want to share just yet.

I really liked Regan and Lucas and they made a good investigative team. I think a podcast, so popular right now, would be an excellent way to propel a cold case back into the spotlight. In this case it really got the attention of the community putting both Lucas and Regan in danger as they edge closer to the truth.

I’m a big fan of Allison Brennan’s mysteries and I’m always eager for her next release. Even though it was easy to guess at the identity of the killer I was sucked into the story eager to find out the motivations, what exactly happened and what the killer would do next!  Regan Meritt was a confident, interesting female lead, coping with a personal tragedy, back in her hometown regrouping.  She’s on leave with the US Marshal Department, and things were not all wrapped with her story. There was also a potential romance. I wonder if Ms. Brennan intends to continue her story in future books. I look forward to solving more mysteries with Regan if that’s the case!

Book Description:

New York Times bestselling author Allison Brennan's suspenseful new mass market original about a college senior's podcast that delves into an unsolved campus murder of a sorority girl three years earlier, as individual callers explode every fact previously thought to be true.

Lucas Vega is obsessed with the death of Candace Swain, who left a sorority party one night and never came back. Her body was found two weeks later, and the case has grown cold. Three years later while interning at the Medical Examiner's, Lucas discovers new information, but the police are not interested.

Lucas knows he has several credible pieces of the puzzle, he just isn't sure how they fit together. So he creates a podcast to revisit Candace's last hours. He asks listeners to crowdsource what they remember and invites guest lecturer, former US Marshal Regan Merritt, to come on and share her expertise.

New tips come in that convince Lucas and Regan they are onto something. Then shockingly one of the podcast callers turns up dead. Another hints at Candace's secret life...a much darker picture than Lucas imagined—and one that implicates other sorority sisters. Regan uses her own resources to bolster their theory and learns that Lucas is hiding his own dark secret. The pressure is to solve the murder, but first Lucas must come clean about his real motives in pursuing this podcast – before the killer silences him forever.
