Sunday Post #258

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated reviewer book blog, and is a post to recap my bookish and non-bookish things from the last week. I'm also linking up to The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb Nance @Readerbuzz.

We were in Southern California last week visiting my son, DIL, and 19 month-old grandson. He's too cute! They have another on the way (another boy) due this next month. We're excited to welcome our fourth grandchild soon! It was nice to catch up.

We got home Sunday and I had work, a medical appointment and then dental surgery on Thursday. I didn't expect to be in as much pain as I'm in right now. I should've been resting today but we had a bunch of ripe blackberries from the garden I didn't want to go to waste so I made blackberry jam and then canned them.  I overdid it. Tomorrow (Sunday) I will rest!

Finding Mr. Write by Kelley Armstrong: 3 Stars

This is 2 weeks worth of reading since I didn't post last week. Winter Lost and Wrong Place, Wrong Time were audios my husband and I listened to on our drive back and forth to and from Southern California. We both love the Mercy Thompson series! It was the first time through for my husband, but the 2nd time through for me. Gillian McAllister is a new-to-me-author, but I'll be looking for more by her as I loved Wrong Place, Wrong Time! We got home from SoCal and I kept listening straight through because I was hooked!

Thank you to Berkley and G.P. Putnam's Sons Books!

    1. I'm loving that I can get the fruit but the vine has so many thorns! They can tear you up!

  2. Yum! There is nothing better than homemade jam!

  3. That blackberry jam is totally worth the tiredness you incurred, I think.

I hope you will push The Love of My After Life to the front of your reading list. I'm very curious about that one.

  4. I hope you're having a good rest day. I've been dealing with a dental surgeon for the last six months or so, but I just got my all clear for him.

    1. Thank you Joy! Oh, wow! Six months of dealing with dental issues? That's gotta be tough. So wonderful you got an all clear though.

  5. I love the babies. You are reading some great books! I haven't made jam the last couple years. I'll have to do that with the fall berry crop. So busy; take care of yourself.

    1. Yes, babies are sweet! Wondering what berries you're growing, Anne! Thank you, I'll try. Was supposed to rest today and didn't really get to. To many things to do!

  6. I'm a lil jealous of your fast reading! I'm feeling more chaos and slower reading lately, and my distance from my Goodreads goal is proving it ;) A Deceptive Composition sounds interesting - I do love accidentally picking up a bit of history while enjoying a good book!

    1. This is 2 weeks of reading, so don't feel bad, Becki! I've had a lot of chaos in my life lately, too. Audio books helps me keep up! The Lady Darby series is wonderful and if you love gaining a bit of history, it's there. Anna Lee Huber includes real life historical events in her books!

  7. Sorry you are still in pain. Hopefully you feel better soon. Yay for another grandbaby!

  8. I am sorry you are suffering so much Rachel! On the other hand, if you are making blackberry jam, you HAVE to read the Spellshop! LOL

  9. Sounds like a busy week. How exciting for another addition to the family.

I hope that you feel better soon.

I love blackberries. I keep wanting to make jam, but it hasn't happened yet!

Have a great rest of the weekend!

  10. My Mom was always canning something but I never had any interest in learning, unfortunately, and my mother was not one to force a kid to do anything. I babysat for lady who taught me how to make and can strawberry jam, but that was a million years ago and I had no interest in it after that one experience. SO, I am in awe of people like you who do can stuff and that blackberry jam looks scrumptious!

    Those flowers are gorgeous.

Sorry about your dental pain. That must be awful. Hopefully it's eased up some by now.

    1. Thank you! I didn't really know anything about canning, but I've been looking it all up on the internet as I do. I learned a few things from canning this batch. Some modifications I need to implement. I hope the pain goes away and it heals quickly! Trying to eat is a challenge!

  11. I'll be right over to sample your ripe blackberries and jam. :) Yikes, dental pain is no joke- you feel it in your toes. I'm glad the trip to family was great and you got cutie grandson time. Winter Lost was fab even just reading it without Lorelei King narrating.

Hopefully you can get a rest this week to catch up, Rachel!

    1. Yes! It's awful! I can't hardly eat. Winter Lost was so good and even better the 2nd time around. My husband loved it, too! Certainly makes a car ride go by quick!

  12. You poor dear! I hope the mouth is healing, but way to find it in you to make that jam. Yum! How exciting that your family will be welcoming a new baby. I cannot wait to hear all about him when he arrives.

  14. I pulled out the info my dentist gave to me to see about getting this thing in my gums taken care of, and realized it was a year ago that I was supposed to take care of it. Now I don't know when I'll fit it in. I have a feeling it will be expensive and painful because it is a facial surgery group they're sending me to. Ugh. I'll be reading Under the Surface soon too! Have a good week!

    1. I had a tissue graft from the roof of my mouth to transfer to my bottom front teeth due to gum recession. I should've done it 5-10 yrs ago and kept putting it off. I'm glad it's over with, but it was expensive even with dental insurance! I'll be happy when it's all healed! Hope we both love Under the Surface! It sounds really good! You have a good week, too, Lisa!

  15. What wonderful looking jam! I picked crabapples last year, and made crabapple jelly which was not only delicious, but the most beautiful color. It didn’t need pectin, either, as they made their own, so that was a deal. ☺️

    1. Crabapple jam sounds wonderful! I didn't use pectin, but I probably should've, or at least picked more red colored berries with the ripe black ones. They have more pectin. The jam turned out a little thin, but I'm making a new batch this next weekend. We'll see.

  21. Blackberry jam always makes me think of my grandmother. They have bushes on their farm that date back to my great great grandparents!

    1. That is so cool! I think the bushes have been here for many decades as well. We live in an area that has land called the "Donner Fruit Trail" because of the roots. Yes, those Donners!
