Review: Lockout (The Alpha Group #2) by Maya Cross

Publication Date: May 22nd 2013

This is not a stand-alone book.  It is the sequel to Locked, which should be read first. Locked is currently available for .99 cents.

About the book: Who is Sebastian Lock?

Sophia had never felt attraction like that before. Raw. Electric. Irresistible. Swept off her feet by the dashing, enigmatic billionaire Sebastian Lock, she was taken on a journey of self-discovery, taken to places she never dreamed she’d go.

But things are never as simple as they appear. Sophia’s trust is a fragile thing, and Sebastian seems insistent on testing it. He has his own demons to battle, and nobody has brought them to the fore like she has.

As their relationship deepens, and Sophia begins to break down his walls, all that greets her are more questions. Why is Sebastian fighting so hard to keep her at a distance? Who is the girl on the background of his phone? And why does the strange tattoo on his chest seem so familiar?

These puzzles plague her, but as Sebastian’s mysteries begin to unravel, she must face an entirely different truth. Staying in the dark may be painful, but finding the answers could be deadly.

My Thoughts:
Well Maya Cross did it again!  Lockout was titillating and thrilling, leaving me a fluttering hot mess in places! But this installment had more. There was romance, and character development!  We’re finally getting to know Sebastian, the real man behind the shield, and I have to say, I’m falling right along with Sophia!

****This review contains mild spoilers for those who haven’t read Locked, the first book.****

We pick right up from the cruel cliff we were left on in Locked.  After sharing a night of pushing limits, passion, and extreme pleasure, Sophia is shocked by a message on Sebastian’s phone and takes off running.  I can’t say I blame her; I probably would’ve done the same thing and then some!  After spending the night cooling off and thinking, Sophia is determined to shut Sebastian out for good, but she has a change of heart when she finally allows him to explain.

Sophia knows the deal when she agreed to their arrangement, but her heart didn’t get the memo, and glimpses of Sebastian’s soft and sweet side has her hoping for more.  But Sophia is in more danger than just from a broken heart when she notices an inconsistency with Sebastian’s work.  A large part of her wants to ignore it, and keep going in blissful ignorance.  And blissful it is!! But this detail niggles in her brain, until Sophia realizes she needs answers.

I loved the commanding and dangerous side of Sebastian from the first book, but it was lovely seeing his tender side as well.  Finding out a little more about what made him tick was satisfying and I can’t wait for more!  I love his range from kinky and dominant, to sweet and vulnerable!!  Who can resist a multi-layered man, giving you just what you need at the right time? He wasn’t afraid to draw things out though, and it was a slow torturous build-up at times!!

“I’ll give you what you want, Sophia. I’ll f%#k you until you don’t remember you own name.” He brought his hand up to brush my cheek, staring down into my eyes. “But not just yet.”

Sophia was just as wonderful as she was in Locked.  She’s independent, sassy, and doesn’t take any bull.  However, she’s not so hardened that she doesn’t feel her emotions strongly; she just doesn’t let them completely derail her.

This was a superb follow up to Locked!! Lockout thrilled and captivated me, gave me some answers and fleshed out the characters a bit more.  I eagerly await the next installment and hopefully, Sophia and Sebastian’s HEA in Unlocked!  Now this is where I tell you, I think Maya Cross is a bit of a sadist!  What an ending!! Thankfully, July is not too far away.

A copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!

About the Author: Maya Cross is a writer who enjoys making people blush. Growing up with a mother who worked in a book store, she read a lot from a very young age, and soon enough picked up a pen of her own. Her previous work spans many genres including horror, science fiction, and fantasy, and she has now started this pen name as an outlet for her spicier thoughts (they were starting to overflow). She likes her heroes strong but mysterious, her encounters sizzling, and her characters true to life.
She believes in writing familiar narratives told with a twist, so most of her stories will feel comfortable, but hopefully a little unique. Whatever genre she's writing, finding a fascinating concept is the first, and most important step.

The Alpha Group is her first attempt at erotic romance.

When she's not writing, she's playing tennis, trawling her home town of Sydney for new inspiration, and drinking too much coffee.
She loves to hear from readers, so please feel free to follow her on any of her social media channels. And don't forget to check out her website. You can sign up to her mailing list there, to hear about new releases and any promotional sales she might be running.
