Review: Highlander Most Wanted by Maya Banks

Highlander Most Wanted

Highlander Most Wanted by Maya Banks
Audio Version Narrated by Kirsten Potter
Publication Date: April 15th 2013 by Tantor Media
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Audible

About the book:
Genevieve McInnis is locked behind the fortified walls of McHugh Keep, captive of a cruel laird who takes great pleasure in ruining her for any other man. Yet when Bowen Montgomery storms the gates on a mission of clan warfare, Genevieve finds that her spirit is bent but not broken. Still, her path toward freedom remains uncertain. Unable to bear the shame of returning to a family that believes her dead or to abandon others at the keep to an imposing new laird, Genevieve opts for the peaceful life of an abbess. But Bowen's rugged sensuality stirs something deep inside her that longs to be awakened by his patient, gentle caress-something warm, wicked, and tempting.Bowen seizes his enemy's keep, unprepared for the brooding and reclusive woman who captures his heart. He's enchanted by her fierce determination, her unusual beauty, and her quiet, unfailing strength. But wooing her will take more than a seasoned seducer's skill. For loving Genevieve, he discovers, means giving her back the freedom that was stolen from her-even if it means losing her forever.

My Thoughts:
Highlander Most Wanted was a beautiful romance with a HOT powerful clan man with a soft gooey heart! This is the second Maya Banks historical romance I’ve “read” (audio book), and I was swept away again!

We met Genevieve is the last book. She was the mysterious girl in the cloak who alerted Graeme to Eveline’s whereabouts when she was being held captive by the McHugh clan. We find out poor Genevieve’s sad and horrific tale in this installment of The Montgomery’s and The Armstrong’s series. Ian McHugh was a sick man who abducted and held Genevieve captive for a year, putting her through a living hell!

When Graeme Montgomery rescues his wife Eveline from Ian’s clutches and executes him, Genevieve has hope that her nightmare is coming to an end. Unfortunately residing in a clan full of deceitful and evil McHugh’s makes that near impossible. Thankfully, Bowen Montgomery steps in and makes it his personal mission to make Genevieve safe. He’s in awe of how strong and intact Genevieve’s spirit remains in spite of all she’s gone through. In getting to know Genevieve, he can’t help falling for this gorgeous woman! Genevieve can’t believe there are men like Bowen on the earth: kind, strong, and infinitely compassionate. He restores her faith in men and in the process falls hard for this beautiful man, because as gorgeous as he is on the outside, he’s that and more on the inside!

I felt so bad for Eveline and was on pins and needles for her because she did a few things that she felt immense shame and regret for. Things she had to do for survival. She didn’t need anything or anyone else dealing emotional or physical blows! I fell for Bowen just as hard as Genevieve did because he was so understanding, and the perfect champion for her. Their gradual shy attraction that developed into an all consuming romance was a treat to witness!

Favorite Quote:

“He kissed her temple, nuzzling her skin, and murmured again that she was the most beautiful lass in the world. They weren't just words he offered. Platitudes he didn't mean. He cared not about the scar that marred her face. In his eyes, she was the most beautiful lass he'd ever known and nothing would change that. Not a scar. Not circumstances. She was his, and he didn't give one damn what others thought.”

I highly recommend this series to any historical romance fan, especially the audio version because Kirsten Potter’s narration is perfection. The accents are lovely yet not overdone.

Unlocked (The Alpha Group #3) by Maya Cross
Publication Date: August 18th 2013
Purchase Links: Amazon US | Amazon UK | Nook | Kobo

About the Book:
The breathtaking conclusion to the USA Today best selling Alpha Group Series.
Who is Sebastian Lock?

The heart can lead you to dangerous places. Abandoned by the man she loves, with nothing more than sweet words and riddles for an explanation, Sophia Pearce felt like her life was crumbling before her eyes. And then they came for her. Now, things will never be the same.

Confronted with the truth about Sebastian’s identity, she’s thrust into a high stakes world beyond anything she could have imagined. A world that threatens much more than just her feelings. Sebastian’s enemies will stop at nothing to get what they want, and they want her.

Their passion for one another consumes them, but as the danger mounts, and loyalties are tested, Sophia must answer one simple question. What is she willing to risk for love?

This book is approximately 54,000 words long, or about 200 printed pages. It contains erotic content and a dominant man who always gets what he wants in the bedroom. It is intended for readers aged 18 and over.

*****This is a spoiler free review in case you haven’t read the series.*****

My Thoughts:
Unlocked was a thrilling and satisfying conclusion to The Alpha Group series! Maya Cross wove a riveting tale full of suspense, danger, around a chemistry filled romance!  Don’t even get me started on the fiery HOT scenes that should come with a warning: WARNING: PANTIES MAY IGNITE UPON READING!!

Unlocked takes us on a wild ride with the mystery behind Sebastian’s group finally revealed, putting both Sophia and him in grave danger.  Betrayals, revelations, and payback are all part of the final installment making it an addictive read!

In the past two books, Sebastian was a mystery unfolding.  In Locked (book 1) we didn’t know much about Sebastian, other than how tempting and sinfully delicious he came off.  We get more insight on him in Lockout (book 2) so I could better understand his need for secrecy and hesitancy for anything more that a casual relationship.  In spite of that, Sebastian couldn’t fight his growing attachment and powerful feelings for Sophia.  In this final story we have his POV as well as Sophia’s, in alternating chapters, and it was a treat to be in his head. I was privy to his intense feelings for Sophia, and I fell in love with him a little more.  Plus, as an added bonus we get to see how his little “games” bring excitement to him just as much as they do Sophia and bringing her pleasure is such a high for him.  Yes, please!

In the past we only had Sophia’s take on things and I didn’t mind because I immediately connected with her from Locked on.  She’s a strong, intelligent, and resourceful woman. You won’t find her making frustrating decisions that make you want to throw your kindle out the window (I’m looking at you, Anastasia Steele!).  Sophia is far from unaffected, though. She’s taken by Sebastian, head over heels, and after the last book she was shattered. Not to worry, though, these two can’t keep their hands off each other!  Best of all, Sophia was just plain fun.  Even in the face of all the danger Sebastian and her face, she tries to look for the good, and keep a sense of humor. AND….she’s always up for some naughty play! ;)  Maya has a talent for writing some very highly charged sexual scenes filled with build up and payoff.

Unlocked was an exciting, sexy ride (pun may be intended, lol!) complete with twists and turns and danger around every corner.  I’m sad to say goodbye to the characters but I think this series ended perfectly. I can’t wait to see what wicked delight Maya Cross has in store for us next!

Excerpt

I hadn’t expected Sophia to sleep at all, not after what she’d been through. Trauma like that can ruin a person. But somehow she’d drifted off. I had no idea where she found the strength to be that tough. She never ceased to amaze me.

For a while I lay there trying to get some rest myself, but the events of the last two days had thrown my whole world into chaos. It was all happening again. The fact that I’d averted the worst didn’t make the situation any better. I was an asshole. I should never have let it get to this point, but I was weak, and it had nearly cost the woman I love her life. How the hell could I sleep knowing that?

To make matters worse, even now I was still incapable of staying away. She was as secure here as anywhere, but the moment she’d left my sight I began to feel agitated. I still hadn’t managed to shed the mindless terror that had seized me when I first heard she’d been taken. The urge to go to her, to simply hold her and never let go, had been almost overpowering.

I’d tried to distract myself. There was certainly no shortage of work to be done — most of my colleagues were holed up together in the board room, planning things until well into the night — but I was useless there. My mind only wanted to focus on one thing, and soon I found myself propped up against the wall outside her room, nursing several fingers of scotch in a heavy crystal tumbler. I didn’t know why, but just being close to her helped. I made myself vow not to enter. It had taken an immense level of control to cut her off the first time, and every moment in her presence stretched my willpower just a little more. I would keep her safe and solve all this, and then when it was all over, I’d let her go again. It was the only way.

But the moment I heard her sobbing through the door, all sense of self-control fled. Before I knew it, I was on my feet, and then in her bed. I expected her to fight, after all, I had to be the last person she wanted to see, but she didn’t. Instead she just burrowed into me without a word. I hated how perfect that felt, the way her body fit like a missing puzzle piece against mine. I still didn’t understand how such simple contact could make me so damn content, but it did.

And now she slept. I couldn’t help but run my eyes over her again. Truth be told, I’d barely been able to stop staring since the moment I entered the room. She looked so fucking beautiful lying there, her face utterly peaceful, her curves perfectly accentuated by the thin cotton sheet. She’d taken the T-shirt I left her, but not the pants, and now in the throws of sleep she’d managed to knock part of the cover free, exposing one delicate hip. It was a tiny thing, the barest hint of pale skin and black cloth, but the sight took my breath away nonetheless. I felt impossibly low ogling her after everything I’d put her through, but I was powerless to do anything else. Her body was like a drug, a burning rush through my system that was impossible to ignore. I knew how that hip would feel if only I’d reach out and touch it. I had every inch of her body charted in my head; so perfectly soft, so perfectly feminine.

Fuck. I had to pull myself together.

Ripping my gaze free, I eased my arm out from under her. I’d done what I came to do. She was resting. There was no reason for me to stay.

She stirred briefly, and I came within a hair’s breadth of pulling her back against me once more, but after a few moments she settled. Taking one last look, I moved quietly out into the corridor and resumed my watch. I’d be there if she needed me, but anything beyond that was too hard. There was no happy ending here, and letting myself think otherwise would only destroy me more.

About the Author: Maya Cross is a writer who enjoys making people blush. Growing up with a mother who worked in a book store, she read a lot from a very young age, and soon enough picked up a pen of her own. She’s tried her hands at a whole variety of genres including horror, science fiction, and fantasy, but funnily enough, it was the sexy stuff that stuck. She has now started this pen name as an outlet for her spicier thoughts (they were starting to overflow). She likes her heroes strong but mysterious, her encounters sizzling, and her characters true to life.

She believes in writing familiar narratives told with a twist, so most of her stories will feel comfortable, but hopefully a little unique. Whatever genre she's writing, finding a fascinating concept is the first, and most important step.

The Alpha Group is her first attempt at erotic romance.

Teaser (Note: Text may change a little before publication)

The third or fourth time I woke, it was with a sob. Moonlight cast the room as a series of jagged silhouettes, and despite knowing that I was somewhere safe, the unfamiliarity of my surroundings sent something sharp skittering through my chest. Suddenly, it felt like everything was closing in around me. I let out another cry and burrowed deeper under the covers, feeling fresh tears welling in my eyes. I didn’t want to be this person, this person who cried at shadows, but I didn’t know how to deal with the emotions that were roaring up inside me.

I felt another bolt of fear as I heard the door open, but in a moment there was a familiar weight on the bed, and then Sebastian’s arms were circling my body from behind.

“It’s okay,” he said softly. “Let it out.”

I have no idea how he knew I was in distress, but in spite of everything that was still unresolved between us, I loved that he’d come. The sheer strength of his presence dwarfed everything else, dulling the fear. He was like an anchor, and I clung on for dear life lest I slip back below the surface again.

He didn’t say anything else, and so neither did I, but just the act of being together was enough. I lay there, listening to the sound of his breathing, enjoying the sensation of that solid chest rising and falling against my back. Gradually, my turmoil began to dissipate. I had no idea how he had such a calming effect on me. When we were together, nothing else seemed to matter.

He felt like home, and for just that night, I pretended like he still was.

Review: Lockout (The Alpha Group #2) by Maya Cross

Publication Date: May 22nd 2013
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

This is not a stand-alone book.  It is the sequel to Locked, which should be read first. Locked is currently available for .99 cents.

About the book: Who is Sebastian Lock?

Sophia had never felt attraction like that before. Raw. Electric. Irresistible. Swept off her feet by the dashing, enigmatic billionaire Sebastian Lock, she was taken on a journey of self-discovery, taken to places she never dreamed she’d go.

But things are never as simple as they appear. Sophia’s trust is a fragile thing, and Sebastian seems insistent on testing it. He has his own demons to battle, and nobody has brought them to the fore like she has.

As their relationship deepens, and Sophia begins to break down his walls, all that greets her are more questions. Why is Sebastian fighting so hard to keep her at a distance? Who is the girl on the background of his phone? And why does the strange tattoo on his chest seem so familiar?

These puzzles plague her, but as Sebastian’s mysteries begin to unravel, she must face an entirely different truth. Staying in the dark may be painful, but finding the answers could be deadly.

My Thoughts:
Well Maya Cross did it again!  Lockout was titillating and thrilling, leaving me a fluttering hot mess in places! But this installment had more. There was romance, and character development!  We’re finally getting to know Sebastian, the real man behind the shield, and I have to say, I’m falling right along with Sophia!

****This review contains mild spoilers for those who haven’t read Locked, the first book.****

We pick right up from the cruel cliff we were left on in Locked.  After sharing a night of pushing limits, passion, and extreme pleasure, Sophia is shocked by a message on Sebastian’s phone and takes off running.  I can’t say I blame her; I probably would’ve done the same thing and then some!  After spending the night cooling off and thinking, Sophia is determined to shut Sebastian out for good, but she has a change of heart when she finally allows him to explain.

Sophia knows the deal when she agreed to their arrangement, but her heart didn’t get the memo, and glimpses of Sebastian’s soft and sweet side has her hoping for more.  But Sophia is in more danger than just from a broken heart when she notices an inconsistency with Sebastian’s work.  A large part of her wants to ignore it, and keep going in blissful ignorance.  And blissful it is!! But this detail niggles in her brain, until Sophia realizes she needs answers.

I loved the commanding and dangerous side of Sebastian from the first book, but it was lovely seeing his tender side as well.  Finding out a little more about what made him tick was satisfying and I can’t wait for more!  I love his range from kinky and dominant, to sweet and vulnerable!!  Who can resist a multi-layered man, giving you just what you need at the right time? He wasn’t afraid to draw things out though, and it was a slow torturous build-up at times!!

“I’ll give you what you want, Sophia. I’ll f%#k you until you don’t remember you own name.” He brought his hand up to brush my cheek, staring down into my eyes. “But not just yet.”

Sophia was just as wonderful as she was in Locked.  She’s independent, sassy, and doesn’t take any bull.  However, she’s not so hardened that she doesn’t feel her emotions strongly; she just doesn’t let them completely derail her.

This was a superb follow up to Locked!! Lockout thrilled and captivated me, gave me some answers and fleshed out the characters a bit more.  I eagerly await the next installment and hopefully, Sophia and Sebastian’s HEA in Unlocked!  Now this is where I tell you, I think Maya Cross is a bit of a sadist!  What an ending!! Thankfully, July is not too far away.

A copy was provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.  Thank you!

Teaser:
As the first song ended, the music changed. The new tune was slower, more sultry, and Sebastian was quick to adapt. A delicate twist of his wrist and I was spinning away, then suddenly snapping backwards to rest against him once more, this time with my back against his chest. With torturous softness, his hands began to trace their way across my sides and down my thighs, flirting with the hem of my dress. Such intimacy in a public place should have made me balk, but the sensuality in the air was infectious. I was utterly lost in the moment. I could feel his breath hot on my skin as his lips teased the air just above my neck, tantalising but never touching. With every vacillation of our hips my ass grazed against his pants, letting me know that I wasn’t the only one finding this to be a powerfully erotic experience.
Other couples were throwing propriety to the wind too. Several men swept passed us with open shirts, their chests glistening with sweat, their partners slicing the air with their skirts like fans. One woman had shed her top all together and was twisting from side to side in just her bra like a belly dancer. All around the room, people were laughing and clapping and cheering in time with the beat. I’d never been part of such an unrestrained expression of joy before.
“You look stunning,” Sebastian breathed into my ear.
“Do I now?” I replied.

“You do. Although it might have something to do with the fact that everything you’re doing right now, I’m imaging you doing it naked.”
I laughed. “Is that so? Well then, I probably shouldn’t do this.” Slipping free of his grip, I turned once more and began to glide around him in a slow circle, swaying my hips provocatively and dragging my hands slowly up and down my body.

A low, masculine sound escaped his throat. “God, I can only restrain myself so much, Sophia.”
I grinned, but didn’t stop. It was thrilling putting on that kind of show for him in the middle of a crowded room. I could see the outline of his excitement pressing urgently against his pants. The truth was, with all the electricity that was coursing through my veins, I wasn’t sure I wanted him to restrain himself. I’d had the elaborate foreplay, now I wanted what that promised.

Release Date: May 25th 2013
Purchase: Amazon | Amazon UK | Barnes & Noble | Kobo
About the Book: Who is Sebastian Lock?

The bar Sophia Pearce is in doesn’t look like much. The wine is bad and the decor worse. But when a sudden attack of curiosity leads her to sneak past security and into the back room, she discovers something unimaginable. The most lavish party she’s ever laid eyes on, in the most unlikely of places.

But that’s nothing compared to what comes next, to the man she meets back there. Sebastian Lock. Gorgeous, commanding, and radiating charm, he is exactly the sort of silver-tongued rake Sophia has sworn to avoid. Unfortunately, he doesn’t care much for her promises.

Every instinct tells her to run, but the chemistry between them is as inescapable as gravity. Soon, he’s opening her eyes to a whole new world of pleasures, pleasures she never thought she’d enjoy.

There’s just one problem. Sebastian is more than he seems. Between the famous company he keeps and the almost paranoid secrecy of his employers, he’s a puzzle Sophia can’t quite solve, and his insistence on keeping things casual forces her to confront the demons of her past.

Can she learn to trust again? Or will Sebastian’s privacy tear them apart?

Contains light BDSM, including spanking, restraint, and anal play

Note: This book is the first part of a trilogy that is designed to be read together, much like The Blackstone Affair. Sebastian and Sophia will get their happily ever after, but not until the last book.

Lockout: The Alpha Group Book Two - Due May 2013
Unlocked: The Alpha Group Book Three - Due June/July 2013
My Thoughts:
Wow! I just finished this book and I’m now I’m HOT AND BOTHERED, and also eagerly awaiting the next installment!! This was a quick read but it was utterly captivating.  This is my first Maya Cross novel but I can already tell she’s one to watch!

Sophia is out at a dingy sort of bar having a good time with her friends.  When beautifully dressed and high class people start showing up and going through a back door, their interest is piqued.  Sophia probably would let it go if she wasn’t pleasantly buzzed with some liquid courage after having a few glasses of red wine.  So with some mild encouragement from one of her friends she gets up to see what the fuss is about.  What is going on in that room?  What she finds is a lavish party and one mysterious but charismatic man: Sebastian Lock.

After a very confusing and exciting encounter that has her literally running out the door, she doesn’t know what to make of the situation.  All she knows is meeting Sebastian had all her senses humming, but also filled her with panic.

Oh, I really liked Sophia! She wasn’t some whiny and weak woman needing to be rescued.  Sophia was a busy and successful woman and one who’s learned from her past relationships. She doesn’t want someone who will twist her heart up into bits, and she’s scared that’s exactly what Sebastian will do.  Her first brush with him has all the red flags flashing: DANGER so she rejects his advances.  Of course you know that won’t last for long, where’s the fun in that? Lol!  When she finally gives in we’re rewarded with some seriously sizzling scenes! Whoa!

“I’m sure it works for some people,” I stammered, “but I don’t think that’s me.”

“Who are you trying to fool?” he asked, his eyes ablaze. “You wouldn’t have come tonight unless you were curious. It was always going to come to this.  We’ll go as slowly as you like, but you’re coming home with me, and I promise you that by the end, you’ll be begging for more.”

The build up and sexual tension in one of the scenes had my blood racing, anticipating right along with Sophia what was going to happen next! *shivers*

At this point Sebastian is a massive mystery.  He’s rich, determined, gorgeous, and inclined to some kink, but we’re in the dark as far as any of his background, personality or feelings.  I’m sure this is all part of the author’s crafty plan to hook us into the story, and it’s working! This is the first book in a trilogy so I’m hoping to discover more about Sebastian in the next book.

Now let’s talk about that ending!! To be fair, I was warned this was a cliffhanger.  But dang it!! I need the next book immediately if not sooner!  Ms. Cross just left me hanging, and let me tell you Sebastian better have some good explanations!  I would’ve done exactly what Sophia did!  I can’t wait to continue this story, and fortunately I don’t have to wait too long.  The next one comes out sometime in May.

When she's not writing, she's playing tennis, trawling her home town of Sydney for new inspiration, and drinking too much coffee.
