Beautiful boy_amazon
One introverted girl. One extroverted guy. One assignment. One afternoon. Then everything changed…
“You destroyed me.” Novah wanted nothing more than to walk away, never see him again. She was determined to pick up the pieces of her tarnished reputation and move on. Her torture became her muse, earning her well-deserved notoriety for capturing beauty with her lens. She had come full circle. She had it all…until he returned.
Nolan found himself surrounded by the grim facets of life, no longer the prominent boy from an affluent family who’d caught Novah’s eye. The years had been unkind and left him in the dark, painful trenches of life. He needed her help.
Fifteen years can equate to a lifetime of change, neither one the same person they once were. Despite the humiliation, the latent wounds, the missing years…they’re destined to heal one another in unexpected ways.

“Show me your scars… and I’ll show you mine.” The muscle in my forehead grew taut, and even without a mirror, I knew how harsh my expression must’ve been to her. It became evident in every inch of my face, from my pursed lips to my tense jaw, even the space between my eyebrows ached with tension. “Just because I don’t wear them on my skin doesn’t mean I don’t have them, Nolan. Everyone has scars. Everyone has dealt with some varying degree of pain. We’ve all been hurt one way or another.” “And what will seeing your scars do for me?” She shrugged with her fingers holding onto my shirt, unmoving, simply waiting. “Hopefully make you understand you’re not alone. Maybe help connect us in some way. Bring us closer, and allow us to open up to each other in a way we’ve never been able to with anyone else.” “How could we possibly understand each other’s pain?” My voice rumbled heavily as the words escaped me. The oxygen grew thick around us and made it difficult to hold onto my bearings. Her gaze fell to her fingers once they began to resume their task— pulling my shirt from the waistband of my pants before unhooking the very last button. Then she ran her palms up my chest. Heat spread over me like the sun peeking through the clouds. It left me lost in her touch. Her hands moved to my shoulders, beneath my work shirt, and then torturously down my arms. She pushed my shirt off my body with an unhurried ease. My white undershirt remained, covering my chest and hiding the unsavory reminders of war. She stood in front of me, staring at my torso like it was a blank canvas, waiting for it to reveal something to her. Gentle fingers caressed the fabric at my sides, leaving behind trails of deep shivers like paths of singed nerves that sparked and sizzled long after her touch had moved on. Her scrutiny proved to be too much to handle, and without thought, I roughly grabbed the hem of her T-shirt, yanked it over her head, and left her in nothing but a plain black bra. Wide, cerulean eyes met mine, and a soft, airy gasp resounded around us.

Exclusive Excerpt:
Alexis Conner’s door is ajar. I hesitantly take a step toward it, rethinking skipping out on dinner since he clearly cooked, when the very guy himself comes through the building’s front door instead of his own. He’s caught off guard to find me standing in my doorway. “Hey,” he says with such a lazy grin that I find myself smiling back too. “Were you looking for me?” He’s wearing a simple gray pair of sweats and a plain t-shirt. Sans shoes. “Yes, I was actually just going to step out for some groceries when it occurred to me that I don’t know where the closest store is.” His chuckle is deep as he closes the door behind him. “Well, there is actually a place within walking distance, but it’s getting late and they don’t stay open past 10. If you leave now you’ll probably make it just fine, but you’d miss the awesome dinner I made.” “Oh.” I feel his hot gaze wash over me as he steps around me. “I made pasta. How about we eat dinner tonight and then tomorrow we can go to the store?” “We?” “Yeah,” he answers, walking into his apartment. He starts talking again, which means I have to follow him inside. “I need to go to the store too. So if I need to go and you need to go, we could go at the same time.” He pauses to look over his shoulder as he pulls garlic bread out of the oven. “Unless, of course, you don’t like to grocery shop with other people.” “I guess there’s nothing wrong with that, but what makes you so sure you’ll want to hang out with me again after tonight? I mean, I could be crazy and you’re only minutes away from finding that out.” Pulling two plates from his cupboard, he flashes me a grin that warms my cheeks instantly. “What type of crazy are you talking about?” Although he makes me nervous, it’s as though my mind and lips have their own plan. “What kind of crazy can you handle?”

Review: The Beast by J.R. Ward

Publication Date: April 5th 2016 by NAL
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Rhage and Mary return in a new novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a series “so popular, I don’t think there’s a reader today who hasn’t at least heard of [it]” (USA Today).

Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn. The slayers of the Lessening Society are stronger than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself…

For Rhage, the Brother with the biggest appetites, but also the biggest heart, life was supposed to be perfect—or at the very least, perfectly enjoyable. Mary, his beloved shellan, is by his side and his King and his brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand—or control—the panic and insecurity that plague him…

And that terrifies him—as well as distances him from his mate. After suffering mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities—and the answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world...and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from...

Spoilers if you haven’t read Mary and Rhage’s story in Lover Eternal

My Thoughts:
I read the first three books of The Black Dagger Brotherhood years ago and just recently I dived back into their world with the spin-off, Blood Kiss, which featured Butch and Marissa. I’d never read their story so the end of last year I finally got back to the series and read their story.  I love that J.R. Ward is re-visiting our favorite couples, showing them in the future facing the unavoidable ups and downs that come with being married or having a long-term relationship.

Mary and Rhage are still in love, but experiencing a little disconnect because of some internal heartache they are each facing.  In Lover Eternal, Mary and Rhage’s story, The Scribe Virgin cured Mary’s cancer and gave her the gift of immortality when she found out that the cancer treatments made is so Mary was unable to bear children.  At the time just the fact that Mary wasn’t going to die, and would have a life as long as Rhage was incredible and such a relief!  Children seemed like a small matter to them when death was such a huge threat, but now as Mary and Rhage witness the happiness their Brothers are experiencing by having their own young it reveals a desire neither thought they’d have. This desire creates a hole in Rhage’s heart.

Mary has her own issues when Bitty, a charge of Safe Place, is orphaned by the death of her mother.  This brings all the grief of Mary’s own losses and sickness all back to her and Mary struggles with her own feelings.

It was heartening to see Mary and Rhage go through their difficult emotional journeys and weather it together, even though it did seem like it took a while for them to share their burdens.  Probably it seemed longer than it actually was because the POVs kept switching to other characters.

Layla and Assail had their own chapters, and while I though Assail’s story was interesting I wasn’t invested in Layla’s.  I hadn’t read Assail’s previous story and yet I found this troubled man and his story compelling.  I hope he gets his own romance and HEA.  Layla’s chapters were pretty boring to me because, IMO, nothing really happened other than her wandering the halls of the training center when she’s not on mandated bed rest because of her high risk pregnancy.  Layla laments her past, falling for the wrong man, Xcor?  I didn’t read the previous story, but even if I had I’d probably be frustrated because nothing really happens on that front.  Thankfully, there was no Lesser POV in this installment!

Mary and Rhage’s romance continues to be one of my favorites!  Rhage just melted my heart on several occasions.   Just the way he treats Mary as if she’s the only beautiful woman in the world, shows her she is his world makes me adore that man! Mary just could not have a bigger heart if she tried so I’m thrilled she has such a beautiful man.  I just checked and their story continues in J.R. Ward's second book in the BDB spin-off, BlackDagger Legacy: Blood Vow set to release December 6th this year.  I’ll definitely be picking that up.

Now that I’m back in the BDB world I’ll have to go back and read some of the installments I’ve missed out on previously so that I have some history on the coming stories.

Review: Asking For More by Lilah Pace

Asking for More (Asking for It #2.5) by Lilah Pace
Publication Date: March 15th 2016 by Intermix
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

The incendiary author of Begging for It and Asking for It again plunges readers into the shadowy depths of love, pain, pleasure and peril...

How far is too far?

Finally sure of each other's strength and love, Jonah and Vivienne continue to explore their darkest fantasies together. However, what should be a night of ecstasy takes a dangerous turn, injuring Vivienne. She shrugs off the incident, but Jonah is haunted by it, particularly by the fear that others may believe he abuses her, or even glimpse the truth of their erotic obsession.

Then Jonah receives a call from his younger sister, Rebecca, who's dealing with trouble of her own in South America. When Vivienne travels with him to aid Rebecca, she learns yet more about his tortured history—and Jonah opens up to Vivienne as never before.

Can Vivienne help Jonah cast off the shadows of his past forever?

MATURE AUDIENCE

My Thoughts:
I gobbled up Vivienne and Jonah’s taboo romance in Asking For It and Begging For It (my reviews) finishing both books within a 24-hour period, and yet at the end I wished for a little more, like an epilogue.  I got what I asked for in Asking For More

I was pleased that I didn’t have to go back and re-read any portions of the previous books, I’d read this duology back in September 2015 so the details weren’t completely clear. The novella re-caps enough of the story so I was right back with Jonah and Vivienne.  Basically, their romance started when Jonah becomes aware of Vivienne’s kink: rape fantasies, a kink he shares.  What follows is supremely HOT, even though I say that feeling some guilt because, hey, it’s rape and violence we’re talking about here!  (If this is a trigger for you, I definitely DO NOT recommend these books!) The story isn’t just about the fulfillment of these fantasies.  The story is multi-layered and intense.  Surprisingly enough, their romance was tender, as well, especially as they open up and share how they came to need this kink.

The novella takes us a little further into the future, we get some more hot role playing, but also see Jonah and Vivienne weather a couple of bumps in their relationship.  It was exactly what I was hoping for!  If you haven’t read this series, and don’t have issues with the subject matter I highly recommend it.

Review & Giveaway: White Tiger by Jennifer Ashley

Publication Date: April 5th 2016 by Berkley
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

A woman is lured into the shadows of a dangerous manhunt...
Wanted and on the run...

For twenty years, Kendrick, a white tiger Shifter, has been the Guardian of un-Collared Shifters who spend their lives living in secret—and in fear of being shunted into Shiftertowns. When Kendrick’s group is discovered and forced to flee, Kendrick is more desperate than ever to protect them

His only salvation was in a beautiful stranger.

In a diner in the middle of nowhere, lonely waitress Addison Price has seen a lot of unusual drifters come and go, but none has ever captivated—and intimidated—her like the imposing fugitive who wields a broadsword with incredible skill. But when he risks all to protect her, Addison’s fear turns to empathy—and empathy to desire as she learns more about her savior. Soon she’s more than willing to help the crushingly sensual white tiger and his cubs in a passionate bid for freedom. Whatever the cost.

My Thoughts:
Addie works at a diner and the night shift has given her something to look forward to ever since a big, strong, handsome man has been coming in with three small boys in tow.  Every night she serves them pie drawing out the shy and adorable boys with treats and silly faces in whip cream.  When they leave Addie analyzes every word and glance uttered by the handsome stranger, dreaming of the next time she can see him again.  Addie’s whole world changes when men show up gunning for the man and she’s caught in the middle.

Kendrick knows he shouldn’t keep going back to the diner for pie, but Addison, the beautiful waitress has captured his attention and he can’t stop himself.  Add in the fact that his cubs adore her and the pie she serves every night, and he’s a goner. As he feared, danger followed him plunging Addie into his Shifter world when he needs her help in looking after his cubs. If he’s being honest, Kendrick just doesn’t want to leave Addie and so he scoops her up and goes on the run.

Urban Fantasy is one of my favorite escapes. I get action, magic, and romance wrapped up in one fun package.  I do love Shifter stories with their primal instincts and urges guiding a lot of their actions and the hierarchy and pack dynamics. While White Tiger was an entertaining read I can’t say it’s in the same caliber as my favorites like Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson.  I’d call it Urban Fantasy lite: a fun way to spend the afternoon reading, but without the same depth as Kate Daniels or Mercy Thompson.  Still, like I said, it was a lot of fun and with plenty of sizzle! This was my second read of the Shifters Unbound series and I was happy to “see” Tiger and Carly again from book five, Tiger Magic.

About LISTEN TO ME:
In New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Kristen Proby’s brand new series, five best friends open a hot new restaurant, but one of them gets much more than she bargained for when a sexy former rock star walks through the doors—and into her heart.

Seduction is quickly becoming the hottest new restaurant in Portland, and Addison Wade is proud to claim 1/5 of the credit. She’s determined to make it a success and can’t think of a better way to bring in new customers than live music. But when former rock star Jake Keller swaggers through the doors to apply for the weekend gig, she knows she’s in trouble. Addie instantly recognizes him—his posters were plastered all over her bedroom walls in high school—he’s all bad boy…exactly her type and exactly what she doesn’t need.

Jake Keller walked away from the limelight five years ago and yearns to return to what’s always driven him: the music. If he gets to work for a smart-mouthed, funny-as-hell bombshell, all the better. But talking Addie into giving him the job is far easier than persuading her that he wants more than a romp in her bed. Just when she begins to drop her walls, Jake’s past finally catches up with him.

Will Addie be torn apart once again or will Jake be able to convince her to drown out her doubts and listen to her heart?

"The story is fresh, the characters are hot, the chemistry between Jake and Addison is through the roof, and the picture that Ms. Proby paints is vivid and energetic." -Literati Literature Lovers

Book Blitz: The One Who Got Away by Ava Claire

The One Who Got Away
Ava Claire

(An Alpha Billionaire Romance)
Publication date: January 27th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It was supposed to be the best day. I was marrying the love of my life–and nothing would ever be the same. And then he left me at the altar.
Five years later, I get a job offer I can’t refuse. The trouble is, the boss just so happens to be the one who got away…

TOWGATeaser
EXCERPT:
Even from behind, he was something to behold. He had on a black leather jacket with a charcoal gray hoodie. On anyone else, it would have looked juvenile, hipster even. Like someone emulating ‘rugged’ based on what they saw in a magazine or on some TV show. This guy was all man, all testosterone with his broad shoulders and jeans that gripped an ass that I was dying to grip.
Realizing that I was staring at some stranger’s behind, my eyes shot up to tamer territory, but his dark wavy hair was even more dangerous. It was just long enough that he could do that man-bun thing that was all the rage. But nothing about this man was forced. He didn’t follow trends; he made his own. His dark locks were wild and free.
I hadn’t even seen his face, but I knew he was trouble. With a capital T. Which meant I was in trouble, because if I wasn’t sure I was gonna take the job before, well, I was positive now.
“Oh! Mr. Carraway, I didn’t know you were on site today.”
I gasped.
No.
NO.
The allure, that instant draw…I should have known. It had only happened once before when I was partnered with the hottest guy at Rhoades High in Advanced Chem.
He turned from the espresso machine and I stopped breathing.
Lincoln Carraway smiled at me like a wolf about to rip out the throat of its prey.
“Welcome to Make a Change, Catherine.”

Review: Just Fall by Nina Sadowsky

Publication Date: March 22nd 2016 by Ballantine Books
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

Balanced on the razor edge of moral ambiguity, this sexy and seductive debut novel asks: How can you find out that the person you love is a killer…and continue to love him anyway? Perfect for fans of Karen Rose, Sandra Brown, and Erica Spindler.

On the night of her wedding to Rob, Ellie’s perfect world suddenly collapses. Her suave, charming, sophisticated husband is not the man she believed him to be. Could he really be a killer?

Ellie is rapidly swept into a lethal vortex of betrayal, lies, and uncertainty: Who is the man she married, really?

And how far will she go to protect him?

From Manhattan to the Caribbean, Rob and Ellie struggle to escape the grip of Rob’s former life - a life his employers are determined to ensnare him in for good.

When faced with a terrible choice—to become a murderess herself to save the man she loves, or to let him die—Ellie’s decision propels her into a whiplash-paced adventure, filled with cinematic twists and a startling sense of unease.

My Thoughts:
I’m currently addicted to romantic suspense. I can’t get enough lately. It has all the romance I crave without angsty, stupid relationship drama.  I enjoy the mystery, twists, action and danger!  Just Fall had plenty of danger and thrills, and a delicious romance I was rooting for from beginning to finish.

The story alternates between past and present starting out with a shocking scene in the present, and then working back and forth.

Rob and Ellie meet and fall in love, but both know/suspect there are some secrets to uncover about their pasts.  Rob’s are a bit darker than Ellie’s, but hers make it so she can relate to Rob. Neither pushes too hard to discover each other’s secrets, because each has something to hide, but events make it impossible to ignore the past any longer.

I really enjoyed this mystery. It took me a little bit to get into the rhythm of the story, because you’re thrown into the middle of things and have to settle in a bit before it truly takes off.  From the beginning I was wholeheartedly on board with Ellie and Rob’s romance. They seemed perfectly matched and supremely in love, and after their disastrous pasts I wanted nothing but happiness for their future. Even though their lives may have been less than moral before, I could understand their choices (sort of?) and make excuses.

I would’ve enjoyed the story a little more if I had more couple time in the present time chapters and if there were maybe not so many twists at the very end.  (Highlight for spoiler) I like to have things settled and get a little more couple time after all the craziness. (End of spoiler)

The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.
