My Thoughts:
This was an on-the-edge, high stakes kind of read! A woman trying to keep her farm afloat, a corrupt businessman, home invasions and a hostage situation! All of it unfolding as a brutal storm bears down on the county!

Ellen McKenna trying to keep her Texas family farm afloat after the death of her husband.  Mitchell Robinson, a local businessman is determined to buy her property for his own greedy plot. He hires a fixer and things go badly.

When the story starts Ellen is hunkering down for a major storm, checking on her neighbors and dealing with mishaps on her own property. Thankfully, she has her kids, despite being young to help with all of that. They’re industrious, smart and love the farm as much as Ellen does. Plus, they have Grandma Penny who does most of the cooking. She was a hoot!

The McKenna’s cared about their community and the land they lived on, not just the profits. I rooted for them as they came up against all these dangers! Ellen and the kids were smart about how they handled things, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t on the edge of my seat worried over what was going to happen!

Whisper Creek was a thrilling, action‑packed story with characters I genuinely came to care about. I tore through it in a single day eager to know how it would all turn out!

I alternately read and listened to Whisper Creek and can recommend either version. Amanda Stribling did an amazing job narrating a variety of characters, male and female, with a pleasing subtle southern accent. A definite recommend!

Book Description:

Allison Brennan delivers a pulse-pounding thriller about one family fighting for their land against both human enemies and Mother Nature.

After the sudden death of her husband, Ellen McKenna is doing everything she can to keep her Texas farm afloat. She and her family hope to expand their operation, but times are tough and making ends meet is more expensive than she imagined, much less trying to grow. Many of their neighbors in Cooke County have thrown in the towel and agreed to sell their farms to a local businessman, but despite similar pressure, Ellen refuses to let her dreams die.

On top of the usual hardships, a series of recent storms has left the region partly flooded, and as the heavy rain begins again one morning, all the members of the McKenna family jump into action to protect their land and animals. Ellen’s oldest son discovers an injured dog—and the dog leads him to a man barely clinging to life, the apparent victim of a brutal home invasion. Then, Ellen’s younger kids go to check on a nearby neighbor and walk into a threat none of them saw coming.

Before anyone can figure out what’s really going on in their idyllic rural valley, the storm picks up again in intensity, and the McKenna kids find themselves in over their heads with no way to call for help. To protect her farm--and her family—Ellen must face down all the forces trying to tear them apart.

Allison Brennan's talent for twisty, tense pacing combines with a deeply drawn family drama and the unforgiving power of nature in this compelling standalone thriller.

Audiobook Review: Marion by Leah Rowan

My Thoughts:
One of the most iconic moments in film history is the shower scene in Psycho. We all know what happens to Marion Crane, but what if she fought back? What if she survived and Norm didn’t?

In this reimagining, “Marion” is devastated to learn her sister has been abused by her husband. Desperate to help her escape, she steals cash from the ad agency where she works and heads to Saratoga Springs. But when her bus breaks down in a tiny town, she’s forced to take the only available room at a rundown motel. Norm Billings, the owner, seems harmless enough and so at first, Marion is thankful she has a place to stay, but things go horribly wrong from there!

The story alternates between Marion and Hannah, a new investigator searching for a missing woman. I liked Hannah, but I was rooting for Marion from the start!

I loved this re-telling with Marion as the victor instead of the victim! Yes, in real life this is a no-no, but have you ever sided with a woman who was tired of being the victim and took justice in her own hands? A few famous (infamous?) examples come to mind for me! This was a wild ride and I wasn’t sure how it would work out. The little vigilante in me was hoping! There were some twists I didn’t see coming, too!

I listened to the audio version narrated by Natalie Naudus as Hannah and Tawny Platis as Marion which gave a clear voice each to POV. I thoroughly enjoyed both narrators and it enhanced my enjoyment.

Marion was a riveting, clever reimagining! A definite recommend!

4.5 Stars

Book Description:

A twist on Hitchcock’s iconic classic Psycho—where the leading lady doesn't die, but instead turns the knife on Norm, kicking off a crime spree that turns the silver screen victim into a heroine for our times.

NORMAN WAS HER FIRST.

Marion is in deep. She's stolen money from the Manhattan ad agency where she works in a desperate bid to help her sister escape an abusive marriage, but the bus breaks down before she can make it to Saratoga Springs. It's late at night, and the only place with vacancies is an old set of cabins on the outskirts of town. She pays for a room in cash, and ends up chatting with Norm, the young innkeeper who's handsome, charming and a touch hung-up on his elderly mother. Back in her room, she steps into the shower, scrubbing off the late-summer heat, when the curtain is pulled back...

Norm Billings is there with a knife. He raises his arm to strike, but before he does, Marion knees him in the balls, grabs the knife, and stabs the life out of him. Now, she's covered in blood, and she's a woman on the run—not just a thief, but a killer, too. Where will she go? How will she save both herself and her sister? And what mysteries will she uncover as she does?

In Psycho, Hitchcock shocked audiences when he killed off his protagonist. But what if the leading lady had fought back? Marion offers an alternate history of the most famous dead blonde to ever grace the silver screen. Only this time, the knife is in her hands—and she's no victim.

Review: Archangel's Eternity by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Eternity by Nalini Singh

Archangel's Eternity (Guild Hunter #18) by Nalini Singh
Publication Date: May 5th 2026 by Berkley
Pages: 448
Source: Publisher
Rating: ★★★★½

My Thoughts:
Archangel’s Eternity was a beautiful, heartfelt finale to a series I’ve loved for years. From the moment Elena the Guild Hunter met Archangel Raphael, their sparks, clashes, and undeniable chemistry set the tone for an epic romance, and this last book honors every step of their journey.

Across the series they’ve battled monsters, faced devastating losses, and navigated the treacherous politics of the Cadre. Here, though, they step into the most meaningful chapter of their lives. The external drama is lighter, a few archangel conflicts and the fragile mental state of another, but the emotional depth is rich. Much of the story centers on Elena and Raphael embracing change, surrounded by the people who’ve become their family.

I especially loved how Elena’s memories of those she’s lost remain fresh. Her grief and love coexist, and she finds a way to let those memories shine in this new beginning.

I was genuinely sad to see this series end, but Nalini Singh closes it with such grace and warmth that I finished the final page with a full heart and a huge smile.

4.5 Stars

Book Description:

Elena and Raphael return for the hauntingly poignant conclusion to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s genre-defining Guild Hunter series.

A thousand years.

It’s been a millennium since Elena’s fateful first meeting with Archangel Raphael. She has survived war and loss, experienced beauty and cruelty. But no matter what, she has always held on to her mortal heart, as she and Raphael have held on to each other. Passionate and vibrant, they’ve built a life that has stood the test of time, growing ever stronger with each turn of the sun.

But change is coming—of a magnitude they could have never imagined—and it will forever alter the trajectory of their existence.

Even as they grapple with the cataclysmic shift in their personal lives, the Cadre of Ten, which has maintained a hard-won peace for centuries, begins to simmer with dangerous fault lines. The specter of madness looms in one archangel, the promise of war burns between two others, and in darkness far from mortal and immortal eyes stirs an ancient, slumbering power.

Suddenly, the future is terrifyingly uncertain . . . at the very moment that Elena and her archangel need to protect a treasure infinitely more precious than eternity.

Review: The Name Game by Beth O'Leary

The Name Game by Beth O'Leary

The Name Game by Beth O'Leary
Publication Date: April 7th 2026 by Berkley
Pages: 384

Rating: ★★★★½

My Thoughts:
Charlie Jones arrives on the remote island of Ormer ready for a fresh start as the new farm store manager. The island is exactly what she needs: quiet, beautiful, and far removed from the life she’s trying to leave behind. But her reset is immediately derailed when another Charlie Jones shows up, insisting he is the one who was offered the job. A simple mix‑up… or something more suspicious?

Rosie Nicole, the farm’s owner, decides the only fair solution is a two‑month trial. Whichever Charlie proves to be the better fit will stay on permanently, unless they can boost profits enough to justify hiring both.

Both Charlies are desperate for a restart, and the story slowly unravels their pasts through emails, diary entries, and flashbacks. Their relationship begins with prickly tension, but working and living in such close quarters forces them into an uneasy truce that gradually shifts into trust, respect, and eventually a simmering attraction. It’s a slow burn, but I was hooked on every moment of it.

I also adored the island regulars, an odd, prickly, and unexpectedly warm group who make Ormer feel like a place you’d want to escape to yourself.

As for the name‑swap mystery, I had no idea where it was heading, but I could feel a twist brewing. When the truth finally dropped, I had to pause and process because it genuinely blindsided me in the best way. O’Leary ties it together so cleverly that once everything clicks, it feels both surprising and completely earned. It added a whole new emotional layer to the story, and I loved it!

My Thoughts:
Elly Parker, a popular influencer whose platform centers around random acts of kindness, has her life upended with one viral post. Elly doesn’t think things could get worse until she helps a random stranger in the subway and then becomes the target of a smart, twisted individual.

Elly reaches out to Eddy Flynn and his team to help her. This stranger is one step ahead at every turn!

Eddy has his own troubles when his ex-wife and daughter become the focus of a sociopathic criminal bent on revenge.

Two Kinds of Stranger was oh-so-good! Action packed, exciting and full of clever maneuvering! I was hooked from the very first page! I love it when well-deserved justice is served out and it was very satisfying here! Oh, that last chapter!!

As a side note, I had only read the prequel novella, The Cross, from this series before picking this up. It works well as a standalone. That being said, I will be reading the previous books because the writing and mysteries I’ve read so far have been excellent!

Review: Wolvers by Taylor Brown

Wolvers by Taylor Brown

Wolvers by Taylor Brown
Publication Date: April 7th 2026 by St. Martin's Press & Recorded Books
Pages: 320
Audio Book Length: 9hrs 7min
Narrator: Ramiz Monsef
Source: Publishers
Rating: ★★★★½

My Thoughts:
Trace Temple is bitter after losing his family’s New Mexico ranch, a loss he pins on the protected wolves roaming the land. So, when a local militia hires him to track down and kill One‑Eleven, the famous female wolf who survived her mate’s death and raised her pups against all odds, Trace agrees without hesitation.

But the hunt doesn’t go as planned. A run‑in with a mysterious mountain recluse named Horn, followed by a near‑fatal accident, forces Trace to confront the wilderness, his own mortality, and the beliefs. By the time he makes it out, he’s not the same man who went in. His shift in perspective doesn’t sit well with the militia.

Unfortunately, walking away isn’t that simple. Trace soon realizes these dangerous men haven’t abandoned their mission, or their grudge. As a new hunter enters the chase, both he and One‑Eleven find themselves in the crosshairs.

Wolvers is a compelling blend of thriller and character study, following Trace, the new hunter, and One‑Eleven herself.  Yes, the wolf gets her own POV, and I loved every minute of it! I was rooting for her and her little pack from the very beginning. Trace’s bitterness made sense, but watching him gain clarity, compassion, and even a spark of happiness (there’s a touch of romance) was deeply satisfying, especially as danger closed in around him.

The writing is beautiful and atmospheric without slowing the pace.

I alternated between an e-copy and audiobook, and can recommend either format. Narrator Ramiz Monsef was new to me, but he delivered a standout performance, giving each character a distinct voice and emotional weight that heightened the entire experience.

4.5 Stars

Book Description:

From the Southern Book Prize winning author of Rednecks: a thrilling novel of pursuit, survival, and redemption between two species in the American Southwest

Broke, dispossessed, and angry at the government after losing his family’s New Mexico ranch, Trace Temple is looking for revenge. He’s living out of his truck when a shadowy militia movement hires him to take down the legendary she-wolf of the Dark Canyon pack, One-Eleven. But One-Eleven is no ordinary wolf. Cunning, fiercely protective of her young, and seasoned in the ways of men, she leads her pack deep into the forbidding desert peaks and canyons, always one step ahead of pursuit.

After a harrowing brush with death in the backcountry, Trace has a change of heart—only to be replaced by a professional hunter and assassin named Murdoch, who ruthlessly pursues his animal quarry while stalking Trace himself.

To survive, Trace must join forces with a pair of unlikely a survivalist animal protector who deploys feral senses and deep wilderness skills to protect the wolves, and Imogen Cruz, a local rancher, childhood friend, and unrequited love of Trace’s early years. Together, they must fight to protect not only themselves and the Dark Canyon pack, but ultimately, the Gila Wilderness itself—the world’s first designated wilderness area.

In Wolvers, award-winning author Taylor Brown presents a suspenseful, thrillingly-written tale set at the burning edge of today’s Southwest, where once-extinct wolves have returned, the land is tinder-dry and fragile, and desperate men seek to reclaim what they believe is theirs to rule.

Review: Too Close to Home by Seraphina Nova Glass

Too Close to Home by Seraphina Nova Glass
Publication Date: April 14th 2026 by Park Row Books & Harlequin Audio
Pages: 304
Audio Book Length: 7hrs 53 min
Narrator: Brittany Pressley, Rebecca Lowman, Karissa Vacker
Source: Publishers
Rating: ★★★★½

My Thoughts:
Three friends, Regan, Sasha, and Andi, live in the affluent, picture-perfect community of Cloverhill Lakes. On the surface, it’s all charm and privilege, until Regan’s car explodes during the neighborhood’s annual Labor Day party. Thankfully, she isn’t inside, but the blast shatters the illusion of safety, and from that moment on, everything spirals.

Regan is already barely holding it together, numbing her grief over her husband’s death with prescription pills. When she spots him alive, just for a moment, from a distance, her world tilts again. Sasha is juggling her own troubles, including her son Drew’s increasingly unsettling behavior and secrets she’d rather keep buried. And Andi is forced to deal with her ex-husband’s new wife, Tia, who is such a nightmare I wanted to strangle her myself!

Too Close to Home opens with a bang, literally, and never lets up! The short, cliffhanger chapters rotate between Andi, Regan, and Sasha. I was riveted as each new thread was revealed, on edge for what it meant for each of the women!  It all builds to a danger-packed, thrilling conclusion that delivers!

I alternated between reading and listening to the audiobook, and the narration elevated my experience. Rebecca Lowman (Andi), Brittany Pressley (Regan), and Karissa Vacker (Sasha) each bring a distinct voice and emotional tone to their characters. All three narrators shine, making the women, and secondary characters, feel fully alive.

Review: Operation Bounce House by Matt Dinniman

Operation Bounce House by Matt Dinniman

Operation Bounce House by Matt Dinniman
Publication Date: February 10th 2026 by Berkley & Penguin Audio
Pages: 448
Audio Book Length: 10hrs 48min
Narrator: Travis Baldree & Jeff Hays
Source: Publishers
Rating: ★★★★½
Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | Libro.fm | Audible | Goodreads

My Thoughts:
Love the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, so I was excited to read Operation Bounce House! It’s definitely different but it has Dinniman’s signature humor, characters you bond with and root for as they fight and try to survive! I enjoyed every minute and blazed through the story in one day!

Oliver Lewis and his sister Lulu are farmers in New Sonora, a planet colonized by his grandfather who has since passed. Oliver is happy in his life figuring out crops, bickering with his girlfriend, and playing drums in his ragtag band, the Rhythm Mafia.

But everything changes when Roger, the farm’s agricultural bot, reports that a scout unit has vanished after chasing down a mysterious radio signal. What Oliver uncovers is far worse than a malfunction: New Sonora is about to be invaded by machines remotely piloted by gamers on Earth. It’s all part of an Apex Corporation “eviction” program, “Operation Bounce House” fully sanctioned by Earth’s government.

Now Oliver, his friends and the agriculture bots must band together to fight off these attackers to his home.

I adored Roger, a sort of stand in robot uncle to Oliver and Lulu. I had to laugh at antics with Betty Sue, one of the “magic chickens” and the giant pig, Cindy! Plus: “A Pig Plus Some Chickens”!!

A definite recommend!

I alternated between the audiobook and the e‑copy and can easily recommend either format. Travis Baldree was a new‑to‑me narrator, and he impressed me. His performance as Oliver, and his range of Southern, Hispanic, and even techno‑tinged accents for the supporting cast, fit the story perfectly. And Jeff Hays makes an appearance, too, which was a fun bonus.

4.5 Stars

Book Description:

A man must fight for his planet against impossible odds when gamers from Earth attempt to remotely annihilate it in this epic, fast-paced novel from the New York Times bestselling author of the smash-hit Dungeon Crawler Carl.

All colonist Oliver Lewis ever wanted to do is run the family ranch with his sister, maybe play a gig or two with his band, and keep his family’s aging fleet of intelligent agriculture bots ticking as long as possible. As a fan of Earth television and culture, he figures it will be a good thing when the transfer gate finally opens all the way and restores instant travel and full communication between Earth and his planet, New Sonora. But there’s a complication.

Even though the settlers were promised they’d be left in peace, Earth’s government now has other plans. The colossal Apex Corporation is hired to commence an “eviction action.” But maximizing profits will always be Apex’s number one priority. Why spend money printing and deploying their own AI soldiers when they can turn it into a game? Why not charge bored Earthers for the opportunity to design their own war machines and remotely pilot them from the comfort of their own homes?

The game is called Operation Bounce House.

Oliver and his friends soon find themselves fighting for their lives against machines piloted by gamers who’ve paid a premium for the privilege. With the help of an old book from his grandfather and a bucket of rusty parts, Oliver is determined to defend the only home he’s ever known.

Review: Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden

Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden

Dear Debbie by Freida McFadden
Publication Date: January 27th 2026 by Poisoned Pen Press & Dreamscape Media

Narrator: Julia Whelan, January LaVoy, Scott Brick
Source: Publishers
Rating: ★★★★½
Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | Libro.fm | Audible | Goodreads

My Thoughts:
Debbie’s quiet, suburban life is unraveling. She’s just been fired from her job as an advice columnist, her husband is keeping secrets, and her daughters have some issues of their own.

Debbie took things in her own hands, and her actions were definitely in the gray (maybe more than that, haha!), but any fan of justice being served will love this story and cheer her on!

This was my first read by Freida McFadden and the hype is real! I’m not elaborating on the plot because of spoilers, but boy did McFadden keep me guessing and riveted by the story! My husband and I listened in one go on a long road and both of us had a few “OMG” moments! Darkly humorous and absolute fun!

The audio was perfection! Julia Whelan, January LaVoy and Scott Brick are three favorite audio narrators and so the story was even more phenomenal with their performances!

My Thoughts:
Wow, what a twisty story! Eden Fox’s goes for a run and upon returning to her house finds her key won’t unlock the door and the woman answering claims to be her. On top of that her husband claims he doesn’t recognize her. No one believes her. I was trying to figure out what the heck was going on! Is she delusional? Or was there something more nefarious going on?

Then we have Birdie, with her POV six months earlier, a woman sort of isolated with no friends except her sweet dog Sunday. She’s just received a devasting diagnosis and found out she’s inherited Spy Glass Manor in Hope Falls from a grandmother she didn’t know she had. Carter, the police detective at Hope Falls figures in as well.

How do these characters all connect? There were some shenanigans for sure!

I rooted for Birdie as she tried to connect the dots.

My Husband’s Wife was a deliciously twisty mystery, riveting from the start! This is a story where it’s best to know as little as possible. Just dive in, buckle your seat belt and go along for the crazy ride! That last twist definitely got me! I’d love another book with these characters!

I listened to the audio version with a full cast narrating with sound effects which made for an immersive experience! I absolutely loved it!

Audiobook Review: False Witness by Phillip Margolin

False Witness by Phillip Margolin
Publication Date: November 11th 2025 by Macmillan Audio

Audio Book Length: 6hrs 38min
Narrator: Thérèse Plummer
Source: Publisher
Rating: ★★★★½
Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | Libro.fm | Audible | Goodreads

My Thoughts:
Karen Wyatt was falsely convicted on a manufactured drug charge after exposing corruption in the District Attorney’s Office as well as the police. She served time before having the conviction overturned. She also won a large sum which allows her pick and chose the cases she wants to defend. She’s also still investigating whether there were others in the DA’s office behind her setup.

I really enjoyed my first read by Phillip Margolin! It was a fast-paced crime procedural with a lot at play and several POVs. Karen had a few cases she worked through, up against a lazy, arrogant DA and it was satisfying to see her beat him with her smart thinking and strategy. I really liked Karen and I hope we get more mysteries with her as the star!

Thérèse Plummer is one of my all-time favorite narrators so it was an added pleasure having her narrative the story! A definite recommend!

Now reinstated to the bar, Wyatt is still interested in finding out who ordered her to be set-up - but the key figures were either killed or are in Witness Protection.

In the meantime, Wyatt is a practicing defense attorney, whose current client is either guilty of a heinous murder, or is a too-trusting patsy for an acquaintance set-up for a crime he didn't commit. Stephen Oakwood had been training with his father in the art of drucrafting (sort of magic) until his father went missing. Stephen didn’t know there was a whole world of drucrafters, with a hierarchy, politics, and grabs for more power. He’s learned a lot since the first book and has been settling in more and interacting with his family, the Ashford’s, a lesser family in the hierarchy but still an old and powerful one. Unfortunately, it’s unclear whether he can trust any of them.

After narrowly escaping with his life in the last book, one of Stephen’s main goals is to gain more abilities and power. He makes a plan to accomplish this with some help from his friend Colin and fellow drucrafter, Ivy. Also, Hobbs, his super-cat, one of my favorite characters!

Stephen is now working with his family of House Ashford a bit more, earning money and gaining a bit more knowledge in the process. Members of the Winged still pressuring him to join, but he’s not sure why and they seem less than savory, but putting them off is becoming increasingly difficult.

In A Judgement of Powers the story picks up from the last book and is an exciting tale from page one! Stephan comes up against nefarious characters, his fighting skills, quick thinking serve him well, but these people are powerful and things were tense! After the way things end I’m eager for the next book!

Book Description:

In a world where magic is controlled by wealthy families and vast corporations, one young man will need all the help he can get in this riveting contemporary fantasy from the author of the Alex Verus novels.

Stephen Oakwood’s ambitions used to be simple. Pay his bills, track down his father, and take care of his cat. Maybe study a little magic after work, if he had time.

Now it’s a year later and he’s got everything he wanted. But it’s come with a price.

The Winged, a mysterious group involved with his father, have noticed Stephen, and they want him to join them or else. His career as a corporate locator has hit a dead end. And his new job as bodyguard to Calhoun Ashford is proving a lot more lethal than expected due to assassination attempts from outside the House, and possibly also from within.

To survive, Stephen’s going to need allies of his own. And along the way, he’s going to have to figure out the secret of his own gift, and what it means. The cults, Houses, and corporations of the magical world are locked in an endless battle for dominance, and Stephen is beginning to realize that he’s going to have to pick a side . . . before someone else picks it for him.
