Sunday Post #257

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated reviewer book blog, and is a post to recap my bookish and non-bookish things from the last week. I'm also linking up to The Sunday Salon hosted by Deb Nance @Readerbuzz.

How was your July 4th? I worked, and so didn't have anything exciting planned.  I had a mammogram appointment with ultrasound on Friday. We went to a friends farm for dinner after and was bushed by the time we got home. Today did some gardening early, a bunch of chores, and then went out to dinner with my sister and her husband tonight.

We're on the downside of a pretty brutal heat wave. Today was the hottest day and it was 112, the hottest it's been in the two years we've lived hear. We've had temps of 100 and over for the last four days and we won't have relief until Tuesday. I hate the heat and summer in general. Thankfully, instead of the nine months of heat out of the year we had in Southern California, we only have to bear it for the 3 months of summer and move on into fall by the end of September. How's the weather in your neck of the woods?

My flowers and vegetables are hanging in there. I planted coneflowers the first summer we were here and they reseeded themselves and are blooming again:

We head down to Southern California after work on Tuesday to spend the rest of the week with our son, DIL and grandson. We have busy week ahead.

  1. I loved The Hermit Next Door and A Novel Love Story. Nice book haul. I love the summer but long stretches of high temps and or humidity is awful. I hope you cool off soon.

  2. I didn't bother to go to "fireworks" (they were replaced with a laser show?) this 4th. But we had a cookout and that was quite fun. Your coneflowers are beautiful!

    1. I don't go to fireworks either, they don't really have many shows around here because of the high danger of wildfires here in Northern California. Thank you!

  3. I am so ready for fall. Summer heat can move on now. Lol. Have a good week!

  4. Those temperatures are brutal. It's been inhospitable here, too. The humidity does not quit and it's in the high 90s, full sun. I hope you have a great trip and enjoy seeing the kids.

    1. The only good thing about this heat is we have low humidity. Like 20-30% during the day. I'm already over summer and we still have more than 2 months left. Thanks, Sam!

  5. Yes, that is brutal heat. We have had a lot of days in the upper nineties, but we do get a lot of nice breezes from the Gulf of Mexico. Unfortunately, we also get hurricanes...

I've been looking forward to Birding With Benefits.

    1. Yes! Yesterday felt like an oven anytime I went outside! We do have low humidity so that at least helps. It also cools way down at night. We were 63 degrees last night. We're supposed to be cooler today and the rest of the week, thankfully. Bummer about the hurricanes, but yay for a breeze! I wished there was more birding and less sex in Birding With Benefits, but it was still an enjoyable romance. Hope you like it, Deb!

  6. I can't even imagine 112! That's horrible. We had a cooler week last week which made our 4th of July lovely. But our temps are going up this week into the low 100s. (Low 100s...isn't that an oxymoron?) And I read Birding With Benefits a few weeks ago and gave it 3 stars, too. It had some cute moments in it.

    1. We'll at least you won't be 112! We do cool off at night and we're in a cooling period, low 90s-100 for the rest of the week. Happy to hear your weather was so nice for the 4th! Yes, there were cute moments in Birding With Benefits, but I wished for more birding and less sex. Happy to hear you enjoyed it overall, too. :)

  7. I'm not a hot summer person. This is the worst heat we have had in the 9 years I have lived in NC. July and August are always hot but the humidity has been worse this year and more heat in late June. The rest of the year is great. We don't get above 100 much in actual temps but the heat index has been very high this year, dewpoints. We didn't do a lot this week other than some medical appts, dogsitting and of course, the latest broken thing, so a new stove.

    1. Yes, this summer has been pretty brutal so far. Last summer was nice and mild, so I guess you can't win them all. It's beautiful here in the spring, fall and a lot of the winter, too. Bummer about the stove!

  8. The temps here have been up and down but we haven't hit 100 (upper 90's a few times but that was it). Hopefully it cools a bit for you! The plants look great as always!

  9. So hot! We had some of that, but it cooled down this past week. I loved A Novel Love Story, need to check out your review soon. Have a good week!

  10. That heat is just brutal! I hope the worst of it passes quickly. It was 94 here yesterday but the humidity made it feel like 105. I left the house for a hair appointment and then scurried right back home. Seven Summer Weekends and Unforgiven both look interesting.

    1. Yes, I've been trying to get outdoor chores done early and then sticking to indoors for the rest of the day. We're cooling off a bit this week, thank goodness. I enjoyed both!

  11. A good looking load of books read.

We have been lucky here in the UK with cooler temperatures, a bit of sun and rain.

Have a great rest of the weekend!

  12. It has been way too hot where we live too. I can't stand summer and am looking forward to autumn already.

Looks like you had some good books to read and some coming up to read too. Have a good week.

  13. Our 4th was good. It rained a lot so it wasn't hot. Got to spend time with family I don't see often. I am super excited for Primal Mirror! Remi has been such a mystery! I'm so glad we get to spend time with the RainFire pack!

  14. Whew, you got sizzling hot! I'm glad its shorter season of the heat for you. Enjoy your trip to SoCal and your family.
Getting ready to start Primal Mirror this week.

  15. I didn't really have plans for the 4th. I don't really like fireworks anymore because of how much they scare my cats. My husband and I just watched a movie and because I didn't sleep well the night before I was in bed by 9pm, lol.

Do you live in Arizona? Our temps were in the high 80s / low 90s this week, but last week we hit triple digits. It's not uncommon here to be around 112 degrees. Like you, I hate the summer. The heat's so oppressing. I wish spring and fall lasted longer where I was. Those are my favorite times of year.

I hope you have a great week.

    1. I don't like fireworks either but it's mostly because I'm afraid they start a wildfire! My cat doesn't like them either, but thankfully they don't light them here because they're illegal. I live in Northern California and 112 is usually hot for us. Thankfully, we do have seasonal changes and so we'll get some relief in the fall. It's cooling down this week, too. I hope you have a great week, too, Jenni!

  16. 112 is too steamy for me. Yikes that's hot. I heard Death Valley got to 128. Ouch. We have usually 2.5 months of summer ... maybe 3 at the most, so even when it's hot it won't last fever. Hang in there! And enjoy your reads. We might reach 100 on Weds here ... Canadians will melt, lol.

  17. I read Primal Mirror, it was ok. I love your flowers.

  18. Your 4th of July sounds nice. Mine was, too. I basically rotted in my bed all day, watched fireworks from Universal Studios from my bedroom window, and then the live streamer I follow on TikTok took us through the streets of L.A. to see all the homegrown fireworks displays.

Your heatwave sounds horrible!!! I'm in the San Fernando Valley and I guess this is our week for one. Today's high will be 91F and then we have 96F tomorrow, 95F, 90F, and finally back down to 88F on Saturday. But I won't leave the AC to do anything until it is back in the 70s. Ya girl hates to sweat. LOL

Have fun visiting your son, DIL and grandson down here this week!

  20. I loved You'll Never Find Me and eagerly awaiting my chance to read Primal Mirror. Good luck with the heat. We're hitting 95 today, which is super hot for us. I plan on doing as little as possible.

  21. No weather like that. We had a heatwave in late May, and a short one late June. I guess that was it this summer.
