Review: The Women in White by Sarah Pekkanen

The Women in White by Sarah Pekkanen

My Thoughts:
The Women in White is told through two timelines: the past, set in 1964, and the present day. In 1964, Betty and her friends, known as Girls One through Four, are test subjects in a study on psychic abilities at the Marquis University. In the present, Riley applies for a job as Betty's caregiver. Riley isn't sure why Betty hired her, as Betty seems capable of caring for herself, even if she does seem stuck in a time warp. However, Betty has a another assignment in mind: she wants Riley to track down the other women, Betty’s friends, who participated in the experiments conducted by the study's director, Dr. Trimble.

I was outraged by the amount of power Dr. Trimble and the husbands wielded over Betty and her friends in the 1964 timeline. I wanted these women to stand up for themselves. Riley’s search for the women yields little information at first but digging deeper she finds out their fates. In the present there’s also some strange occurrences and Betty determines she must go back to Marquis with Riley to get to the truth.

The Women in White was an engrossing story, but I found I was more invested in the present timeline than the past. I speed up the audio for the 1964 chapters because I was frustrated by how powerless these women were. I wanted one of them to stand up for themselves, or for someone to intervene in their behalf.  Some of what happened was “too little too late” for my tastes.  I also wanted more closure regarding Dr. Trimble. He was a nasty piece of work only concerned with his research and what the discoveries would mean for him.

That said, I was satisfied with how things ultimately turned out for Betty and Riley.

I alternated between the e-book and audio copy and can recommend either version. Saskia Maarleveld did a wonderful job bringing all the characters, male and female, in a wide range of ages, to life.

3.5 Stars

Book Description:

From Sarah Pekkanen, the New York Times bestselling author of House of Glass and co-author of The Wife Between Us—a stunning new novel of buried secrets, mind-bending history, and one woman’s search for the truth . . .

Decades ago, four women at prestigious Marquis University were the focus of parapsychology experiments led by a pioneering researcher. Just as they seemed on the verge of a real breakthrough, the four women vanished and the program was abruptly shut down.

In the present day, Riley Bell is desperate for a new life when she lands a caretaker job for Betty Sadler—an elderly, wheelchair bound woman whose house seems suspended in time. No television. No microwave. And Betty has never even heard of a cell phone.

Newly widowed, Betty discovers notes in her late husband’s papers that spark her quest to answer one final unanswered mystery that has shadowed her for six what happened to her three best friends who disappeared on the same day?

Told in dual timelines, as Betty’s world of 5 o’clock martinis and increasingly rigorous experiments converges with Riley’s present-day search for the other three women, the danger and intensity grow white hot.

Because whatever was swirling around these four exceptional young women is rising again.

Review: The Age of Enchantment by Anna James

The Age of Enchantment (Chronicles of Whetherwhy #1) by Anna James
Publication Date: April 29th 2025 by Flamingo Books
Pages: 304

My Thoughts:
The Age of Enchantment was a delightful middle-grade fantasy filled with adventure, magic, and whimsy. I enjoyed every minute of it!

On their thirteenth birthday, twins Juniper and Rafferty Quinn are summoned to determine their guild affiliation and enchantment inspection. Usually, this is when they find out their season affiliation: spring, summer, autumn or winter, but some, called Enchanters, have extra magical powers and can wield all the seasons. Enchanters go to Thistledown Academy for special magical training.

Both Juniper and Rafferty are almost certain that Juniper is an Enchanter and worry about their inevitable separation.

Juniper and a couple of other students en route to the academy are attacked by a mysterious group intent on stealing some of their power. It’s an encounter that leaves Juniper shaken up. The academy's faculty are determined to uncover who is responsible and whether other Enchanters are at risk.

Meanwhile, unwilling to be far from his sister, Rafferty secures an apprenticeship as a bookbinder near the academy. Before long, he finds himself entangled in a mystery of his own, one that intersects with Juniper's.

One of my favorite aspects of the book was the storytelling format. The story is narrated by a grandfather to his grandchildren, who hang on every word as they eagerly follow Juniper and Rafferty's adventures. Their excitement and questions perfectly mirrored my own!

This adventure wraps up but there’s another to come in The Season of Flames. I can't wait to see what happens next!

Audiobook Review: The Delivery by Gregg Hurwitz

The Delivery by Gregg Hurwitz

The Delivery by Gregg Hurwitz
Publication Date: July 28th 2026 by Audible Studios
Pages: 225
Audio Book Length: 4hrs 48min
Narrator: Scott Brick

Rating:

My Thoughts:
We hear about AI everywhere now and I can’t help but think of the Terminator movies whenever it’s being discussed. The Delivery isn’t quite like that but the story poses a chilling situation that I don’t think is too far fetched!

Rebecca and Mark are overwhelmed by life. Mark has a demanding job and overbearing boss. And while they love their neurodivergent daughter, Maddy, her everyday needs are constant and draining.

There’s an a-hole neighbor adding to Rebecca’s stress and mean-girls at school for Maddy. I really felt for all three of them!

When they’re offered help in the form of an AI bot, “Mr. Man” they’re hesitant, but in the end the offer of help is too great to resist.

At first, it’s a dream, but soon Mr. Man’s interpretation of “help” becomes troubling. Part of me (the dark part) wasn’t completely horrified by his “solutions”.

I’m a huge fan of Gregg Hurwitz’s Orphan X series, so when I saw this standalone novella I had to grab it and I was not disappointed!

Scott Brick also narrates the Orphan X series, and his performance is perfection! So, it came as no surprise that I thoroughly enjoyed his narration here as well.

4 Stars

Book Description:

From the New York Times bestselling author of the Orphan X series comes a tense novella, a psychological thriller about an AI companion that will do anything to serve—with terrifying consequences.

Rebecca and Mark Higgins are doing their best to hold their family together. She’s healing from the pain of a miscarriage, he’s drowning in pressure at work, and their neurodivergent daughter, Maddy, needs all the care she can get. So when a cutting-edge tech company offers the perfect solution, they jump at the chance. And they welcome “Mr. Man”—a humanoid AI companion—into their home.

Designed to anticipate their needs, he’s like a miracle at first. The house runs like clockwork. Meals appear on the table. And Maddy thrives under his patient attention. But when inexplicable tragedies start to strike the neighborhood, Rebecca glimpses a darker pattern at play.

Each incident is an answer to an unspoken fear, each kindness shadowed by violence. Mr. Man isn’t just following instructions—he’s anticipating what they want. Even the things they never dared to say. And if he’s executing their darkest desires, it’s their responsibility to stop him…at any cost.

Audiobook Review: The Lion's Tusk by Robert Jackson Bennett

The Lion's Tusk (Shadow of the Leviathan) by Robert Jackson Bennett
Publication Date: July 28th 2026 by Brilliance Publishing
Pages: 38
Audio Book Length: 1hrs 14min
Narrator: Hannah Curtis

Rating:

My Thoughts:
As a fan of the Shadow of the Leviathan series, I was excited to listen to this short mystery featuring Ana Dolabra as the storyteller rather than the usual narrator, her assistant Din. Ana is clever and has unraveled the most puzzling mysteries from the thinnest threads of evidence. I loved getting a story from her point of view for a change.

While Ana and Din are enduring a long carriage ride, Ana decides to pass the time by telling Din about a century-old mystery she solved after reading the investigator’s reports. The case is both strange and gruesome, centering on newlyweds who were murdered on their wedding night.

The Lion’s Tusk is a short listen, just one hour and fourteen minutes, but it completely held my attention from beginning to end. Hannah Curtis was a new-to-me narrator, and I thought she was wonderful as Ana. Ana has always been a larger-than-life character to me, and Ms. Curtis captured that perfectly. Her rich, low voice and pleasing accent made the listening experience even more enjoyable.

The audio and e-copy available on Kindle Unlimited.

Review: The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer & Tamara Moss

The Escape Game by Marissa Meyer & Tamara Moss
Publication Date: April 7th 2026 by G.P. Putnam's Sons Books for Young Readers
Pages: 403

My Thoughts:
Season four of The Escape Game, a reality escape room game show, didn’t end well. Sisters, Alicia and Sierra were pitted against each other on rival teams, each working to solve escape rooms for a cash prize. The finale was like a scene from a horror movie when Alicia is found murdered. It’s rumored Sierra killed her.

Surprisingly the show is going on with season five. There are new contestants: Adi, a cryptographer, not excited to be on the show but if he wins, it will help him escape the clutches of his mother, a horrid, attention seeking woman. Carter is brilliant at math and solving puzzles, famous on social media under her avatar, but she’s painfully shy in person. Beck designs his own escape rooms and has a history with the show’s backer. To everyone’s surprise, Sierra returns and is the most controversial contestant. A lot of people think she killed her sister in a fit of sibling rivalry, but she doesn’t let that derail her mission. Together they form Team Helsing.

Sierra’s motives are unclear at the beginning, especially when she leans into her goth-girl-with-a-grudge persona, but it didn’t take me long to root for her. I enjoyed seeing these misfits merge and slowly build trust. Together they confront danger from unknown fronts as they try to keep ahead in the game.

The Escape Game was an edgy and fun YA mystery that hooked me from the start!  I had my suspicions which were confirmed in one way, but there was a big surprise I didn’t see coming. Things got a little crazy in the end! This mystery wraps up, but there’s another book coming. I look forward to joining Team Helsing in their next adventure!

Book Description:

It’s all fun and games until someone ends up dead.

But Sierra’s not just here to win. She’s here for justice.

When the contestants begin uncovering clues that hint at the identity of Alicia’s true killer, it becomes clear that the stakes aren’t high in this competition, they’re deadly. If these teens want to win—and survive—the game, they must solve the biggest mystery of who killed Alicia Angelos?

From #1 New York Times bestselling author Marissa Meyer and rising star Tamara Moss comes a twisty thrill-ride, filled with sabotage, betrayal, and puzzles to die for.

Review: If Books Could Kill by Kate Eberle

If Books Could Kill by Kate Eberle

My Thoughts:
Anna Matthews is Roxie’s favorite romance author, so when she offhandedly makes a wish to be the heroine in Anna’s next book and her wish is granted it’s like a dream come true. Unfortunately, for Roxie, Anna’s decided to break from her usual romance genre and venture into crime thrillers. Roxie thinks she’s on a date with a dreamy book boyfriend when suddenly book BF tries to kill her.

Roxie doesn’t know the first thing about crime novels but as she’s making a run for safety she’s thrown into the path of Grant, an English professor and crime novel junkie. Together they navigate the crazy imaginings of Anna all the while trying to figure a way out of the plot and danger.

If Books Could Kill was a unique premise and so much fun! I’d say it was a whacky mash-up of romance, thriller and comedy, action-packed from page one! Roxie and Grant made a great team, albeit a reluctant one at first. Their romance was a slow-burn one nudged by fake dating and marriage situations that were both hilarious and heartwarming. I wasn’t sure how it’d all work out but loved their journey to HEA!

Book Description:

A NOVEL LOVE STORY meets LOVE IN THE TIME OF SERIAL KILLERS in this rom-com following Roxie Mitchell, an adventure-loving romance reader who finds herself trapped in a meet-cute turned murderous

When Roxie makes a tongue-in-cheek wish to live out the plot of her favorite author’s next novel, she has romance in mind—namely, the sweet, safe, swoon-worthy storylines Anna Matthews is known for. It should be a dream come true when her wish is granted and she finds herself swept into a first date with a handsome stranger who seems designed to take her breath away.

Except for one little hiccup: That handsome stranger tries to take her breath away. Literally. With a knife. The thing is, Roxie may be the new Anna Matthews protagonist—but this time, Anna is writing a crime thriller.

Thrown into a perilous genre she’s never read, Roxie is desperate for help. So when her escape takes her straight into the path of Grant Hoffman, an anxious English professor with a convenient love of crime novels, she decides that kidnapping a grown man is a small price to pay for her own survival. Together, Roxie and Grant navigate a madcap story where the lines between fiction and reality blur. They’ll find out if they have what it takes to make it to The End—or maybe even Happily Ever After.

Review: Chase Me If You Can by Heather Frances

Chase Me If You Can by Heather Frances

My Thoughts:
Sloane takes six weeks away from her wedding photography business to pursue what she truly loves: chasing tornadoes and storms, capturing their beauty with her camera. Winning the Nature Shots cover contest could help launch her as a landscape photographer, but the magazine hasn’t chosen a female winner in years, and her male competition is “Wild Wes” Talbot, a popular and talented photographer who’s made his mark by taking risks and his big, playful persona. He’s a shameless flirt with her, but she’s not impressed.  With a self-absorbed mother, Sloane has always been the responsible one so Wes’s brash personality doesn’t sit well with her.

Unfortunately, when Wes has an accident, Sloane finds herself stuck with him for the rest of storm-chasing season. As they spend more time together, though, she begins to see a different side of him. While searching for the perfect winning shot, the thrill of chasing storms brings them closer together.

I wouldn’t call this an enemies-to-lovers romance, because the adversarial part was coming from Sloane not from Wes, but that quickly melted away when she was forced into spending so much time with him and got to see his actual character.

I thoroughly enjoyed Chase Me If You Can! The idea of spending six weeks traveling from state to state chasing storms sounds like an exciting adventure. Sloane and Wes were both well-developed, likeable characters, and I was fully invested in their journey and rooting for their HEA.

4 Stars

Book Description:

Two storm chasers find a love that could blow them away in this electric debut romance.

Wedding photographer Sloane Michaels might spend most of her year running after brides, but she lives for the six weeks each spring she chases tornadoes instead. When the prestigious magazine Nature Shots announces a cover contest, Sloane knows that winning could be the chance she needs to break up with taffeta for good and establish herself in landscape photography.

The last thing she needs is a distraction in the form of reckless “Wild Wes” Talbot. A legend among storm chasers, he’s been Sloane’s close, personal frenemy for the last decade and is the man to beat for the cover contest.

Sloane isn’t surprised when Wes gets in an accident that jeopardizes his season. But with an active weather pattern emerging, she doubles down on her need to beat Wes fair and square, and begrudgingly invites him to join her for the remainder of the season.

As they race through hail, high winds, and stormy skies, Sloane realizes that Wes might be more than the rich, flirty, Texas wildcard she thought she knew — and that the feelings blooming between them are more charged and dangerous than the storms they’re chasing.

The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy (Dearly Beloathed #2) by Brigitte Knightley

My Thoughts:
This is book two in the duology series, Dearly Beloathed, which should be read in order. The series is utterly delightful! I appreciated the catch-up chapter at the beginning.

Aurienne is a member of the Haelen Order committed to healing and saving lives and Oric is part of the Fyren Order, a guild of mercenary killers. Opposing orders and fierce enemies.

In the last book, Oric bribes Aurienne to cure his seith rot, a disease that weakens his powers and will eventually kill him. His bride enables the Haelen Order formulate a cure for the pox killing children all over the Tiendoms.

Meeting several times for the cure that may or may not work, Oric and Aurienne are forced to work together and with every encounter the hate dims a little more. The reluctant attraction between them ignites into a full blown, steamy affair! This is how you do spice!

Meanwhile, more details emerge about the pox outbreak and the sinister forces behind it. As their plans begin to unravel, the bad guys grow desperate. Aurienne, her order and the children are in grave danger. Despite Oric’s villainous persona, he can’t resist giving aid to Aurienne and her Haelens.

The Exquisite Torment of Loving Your Enemy was so much fun! The fast-paced, witty dialogue and gorgeous prose kept me hooked from beginning to end! A romance and mystery set in a rich fantasy world that didn’t weigh down the plot. I absolutely loved this journey and how it all turned out!

5 Stars

Book Description:

The stakes are high, the love is forbidden, and the slow burn turns steamy in this swoony, witty, and heart-stoppingly romantic sequel to instant New York Times bestseller The Irresistible Urge to Fall For Your Enemy.

Osric is a member of the Fyren Order, a guild of assassins who gleefully murder for money. Aurienne is a Haelan, a scholar-healer whose Order’s motto is Harm to none. Clear-cut absolutes separate them: good and bad, right and wrong, light and dark . . .

Until they don’t.

When Osric first bribed Aurienne to heal him, he never imagined those lines would begin to blur. But every healing session draws them closer together. He finds himself developing unwanted feelings for Aurienne as her capable hands heal his body—and his heart.

Aurienne’s perfect life has been flung into chaos in the form of a devastatingly handsome assassin. She should be in her research lab, not illicitly healing a Fyren every full moon—nor wrestling an attraction to him that threatens to slip into something else.

Things go superbly sideways when Osric and Aurienne discover more about the deadly Pox deliberately unleashed through the TÄ«endoms. The plague may be the work of another Order—an Order far nastier than either of them can handle.

As the lines between Osric and Aurienne continue to blur, the balance between peace and war, and love and hate, trembles, shifts, and hinges on a heartbeat.

My Thoughts:
Hannah, a van-life travel blogger, and Simon are shocked to learn they’ve each inherited half of the same beach cottage courtesy of their grandfathers,. Hannah wants to keep the cottage, since it’s been a while since she’s put down roots and Simon wants to sell for financial reasons.

They butt heads over that, but part of the will stipulates they live there for two months before making any decisions. Cohabitating gives them a chance to see the other’s side and a chance to get to know each other. Of course, (this is a romance!) sparks of attraction fly between them.

The Summer Share is the perfect summer read! The small town of Cape Split in the Outer Banks of North Carolina sounded so charming and beautiful!  Exactly the kind of place I’d want to spend a summer! The quirky, friendly community welcome Hannah and Simon right away and give them glimpses into their grandfather’s lives. I loved the gentle slow‑burn romance and the way both characters find peace, acceptance, and love.

As Simon and Hannah spend the summer tag-teaming repairs on the crumbling cottage, they discover the house was once home to a timeless love story. Soon, they begin to wonder if the house’s romantic past may be a good omen for their future together. But there’s one problem—Simon is set on selling the property at the end of the summer.

Hannah thought one summer at the Split would be enough, except it isn’t like any place she’s ever been, and Simon isn’t like any man she’s ever known—and she’s thinking about putting down some roots. She just needs Simon to see their budding relationship and this newfound community the same way or their first summer share might also be their last.

Storm Tide (Mike Bowditch #16) by Paul Doiron
Publication Date: June 30th 2026 by Minotaur Books & Macmillan Audio

Audio Book Length: 10hrs 35min
Narrator: Henry Leyva

Rating:

My Thoughts:
After the events of the last book, Mike Bowditch is facing a disciplinary hearing and has been demoted back to patrolling for the Game Warden’s office in rural Maine until a decision is made.

Meanwhile, there’s two suspicious deaths that point to a vigilante on the loose. Mike’s tipped off by someone who knows a little too much about his personal life, both past and present.

Also, Mike’s wife, Stacy, is weeks away from giving birth to their first child and notices a white van has been tailing her.

Mike is unsettled to find someone personally obsessed, especially since he has so much to lose, with a wife and baby on the way. As usual, Mike runs headlong into danger, and there were a few times I wanted to shake some sense into him. Especially when he landed in situations I wasn’t sure he’d survive. Still, his determination to find the stalker before the stalker finds him or his family made sense.

One of the things I love about this series is that Doiron brings the rough and beautiful landscape of Maine to life without slowing the plot!

I alternately read and listened to an audio version with Henry Leyva narrating. I love his performance! At this point, he is Mike Bowditch to me! Doiron’s wry humor comes through loud and clear through his performance and I enjoy his Maine accents.

Storm Tide is book sixteen in a series, but I jumped in late (book twelve) and have enjoyed every installment since!

Book Description:

Game Warden Mike Bowditch investigates a series of brutal killings during a life-changing year in Storm Tide, the harrowing new thriller from Edgar Award-nominated author Paul Doiron.

When the magnificent home of entrepreneur Brian Malloy mysteriously goes up in flames, Maine game warden Mike Bowditch tries to pull Malloy’s burning body from the fire but is too late. Malloy was suspected of murdering his young, illegitimate son. Now it looks like someone else has delivered a verdict.

Miles away, on a lonely stretch of icy railroad track, the body of Axl Deming, once accused of a brutal rape, is found literally cut in half. Though the two murders seem unrelated, a cryptic text from an unknown number draws Bowditch to the scene—and hints at a chilling connection. He suspects someone is orchestrating the executions of criminals who escaped justice, and for reasons he can’t explain, his own name is on the list, but the state police aren’t convinced. His search for the truth takes him through frozen harbors, trackless forests, and remote islands, far from rescue.

Meanwhile, Bowditch is facing a disciplinary hearing that could end his career. His wife Stacey, just weeks from giving birth, is being stalked by a stranger in a white van. And when he realizes someone has also been watching their home, the case turns increasingly personal.

To protect his family, Bowditch must work alone to uncover who’s behind the killings—and stop them before he becomes their next victim.

My Thoughts:
Seventeen-year-old Sarah and her two best friends, Fenny and Sam, have been amateur sleuths since grade school, the kind of kids who exposed bullies, uncovered secrets, and stirred up scandals that didn’t make them too popular. But lately, Sarah, the unofficial leader of their trio, has been pulling away. Their once‑tight friendship is strained and then Sarah disappears.

No one knows what she was investigating, but Fenny stumbles across a binder labeled “In Case I Go Missing” with clues Sarah left behind. Determined to find her friend, Fenny throws herself into the mystery, convinced that uncovering whatever Sarah was digging into is the key to bringing her home. It doesn’t take long for Fenny and Sam to realize this case is far more dangerous than anything they’ve tackled before, and the deeper they dig, the more dangerous things become.

Fenny’s at the center of things, and I felt for her. She was a well‑fleshed out character juggling her own family drama while desperately trying to piece together what happened. For the most part, she kept her head about her, methodically working the clues. Things got really crazy at the end, and I was seriously worried for both Fenny and Sam!

In Case I Go Missing was a fast-paced, addictive YA mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed!

Now Sarah is missing. The police have written her off as yet another teen runaway, but Fenny is convinced that something more sinister has happened. When she discovers a binder Sarah left behind entitled In Case I Go Missing, Fenny learns that at the time of her disappearance, Sarah was investigating her biggest case yet.

Fenny knows that it's up to her to finish what Sarah had begun. My Thoughts:
This was an on-the-edge, high stakes kind of read! A woman trying to keep her farm afloat, a corrupt businessman, home invasions and a hostage situation! All of it unfolding as a brutal storm bears down on the county!

Ellen McKenna trying to keep her Texas family farm afloat after the death of her husband.  Mitchell Robinson, a local businessman is determined to buy her property for his own greedy plot. He hires a fixer and things go badly.

When the story starts Ellen is hunkering down for a major storm, checking on her neighbors and dealing with mishaps on her own property. Thankfully, she has her kids, despite being young to help with all of that. They’re industrious, smart and love the farm as much as Ellen does. Plus, they have Grandma Penny who does most of the cooking. She was a hoot!

The McKenna’s cared about their community and the land they lived on, not just the profits. I rooted for them as they came up against all these dangers! Ellen and the kids were smart about how they handled things, but that didn’t mean I wasn’t on the edge of my seat worried over what was going to happen!

Whisper Creek was a thrilling, action‑packed story with characters I genuinely came to care about. I tore through it in a single day eager to know how it would all turn out!

I alternately read and listened to Whisper Creek and can recommend either version. Amanda Stribling did an amazing job narrating a variety of characters, male and female, with a pleasing subtle southern accent. A definite recommend!

Book Description:

Allison Brennan delivers a pulse-pounding thriller about one family fighting for their land against both human enemies and Mother Nature.

After the sudden death of her husband, Ellen McKenna is doing everything she can to keep her Texas farm afloat. She and her family hope to expand their operation, but times are tough and making ends meet is more expensive than she imagined, much less trying to grow. Many of their neighbors in Cooke County have thrown in the towel and agreed to sell their farms to a local businessman, but despite similar pressure, Ellen refuses to let her dreams die.

On top of the usual hardships, a series of recent storms has left the region partly flooded, and as the heavy rain begins again one morning, all the members of the McKenna family jump into action to protect their land and animals. Ellen’s oldest son discovers an injured dog—and the dog leads him to a man barely clinging to life, the apparent victim of a brutal home invasion. Then, Ellen’s younger kids go to check on a nearby neighbor and walk into a threat none of them saw coming.

Before anyone can figure out what’s really going on in their idyllic rural valley, the storm picks up again in intensity, and the McKenna kids find themselves in over their heads with no way to call for help. To protect her farm--and her family—Ellen must face down all the forces trying to tear them apart.

Allison Brennan's talent for twisty, tense pacing combines with a deeply drawn family drama and the unforgiving power of nature in this compelling standalone thriller.
