My Thoughts:

Agent Frankie Cash of the GBI and Sheriff Jim Colcord are pulled into a puzzling case when a reclusive mountain man is found brutally tortured and murdered in his remote Colorado cabin. The ritualistic, religious overtones are disturbing.

 

As they investigate, Frankie and Colcord find themselves battling fanatical protestors, relentless reporters, narrow‑minded clergy, and a dangerous figure hunting for an object worth killing for.

 

Some of the law‑enforcement procedure veers into the unbelievable, but that didn’t stop this from being an action‑packed, entertaining ride. The fun kind of popcorn thriller to plug into when you just want to be entertained!

 

I’ve enjoyed Stephanie Németh‑Parker’s narration before, and she once again delivers. She gives each character a distinct presence with appropriate emotions, elevating the entire experience!

My Thoughts:

Geneva has inherited her parents’ beloved but financially struggling inn, the Rosalie, perched on the hurricane‑battered coast of St. Medard’s Bay, Alabama. The historic property has weathered many storms, yet keeping its doors open has been a fight. So, when August Fletcher, a true‑crime author, books a long stay to research the infamous Lo Bailey case, Geneva sees a rare opportunity to help keep the Rosalie afloat.

 

Lo Bailey, a local girl accused of killing her married lover during the catastrophic Hurricane Marie in 1984, has always been a name Geneva recognized but never truly understood. As a new hurricane builds and threatens, secrets are revealed that tie past and present together.

 

The tension builds chapter by chapter, each reveal raising the stakes as the incoming hurricane barrels closer. The story unfolds through multiple POVs, primarily Lo and Geneva, with glimpses of August through his manuscript and other characters. Lo, in particular, was a standout: flawed, magnetic, and impossible not to root for.

 

While I correctly guessed some of the twists and found a few details a bit far‑fetched, I was completely absorbed from start to finish. It’s an engaging, atmospheric read that kept me turning pages.

 

I alternately read and listened to the audio copy and can recommend either version. The audio was wonderfully narrated by a full cast, Dan Bittner, Patti Murrin and Stephanie Németh-Parker, just to name a few, and it definitely enhanced my entertainment!

Stephanie Németh-Parker narrates and I thought she did a wonderful job with the accents and wide range of characters: male, female, old and young! She’s fast becoming one of my favorite narrators!

My Thoughts:

Capri Sanzio runs a successful tour guide business around San Francisco, specializing on the true crime history of the city. Being familiar with San Francisco I really enjoyed the interesting historical information given at the beginning of each chapter!

 

In this installment, while running her business, Capri’s also working on a book based her experience solving the mystery of the “Overkill Bill” murders.  She’s caught up in another murder investigation when a woman on her tour witnesses a possible murder. She works along with Detective Petito, and they make a good team! I’m on board with this pairing!

 

Capri is also dealing with her ex-husband’s shifty business dealings, as it affects their grown daughter, Morgan. Todd’s a creep! It seems there will be more about that in the next book.

 

A Tour to Die For was just as fun as the first book! Capri’s education in investigative journalism was evident in her smart and methodical approach in searching for answers. I appreciated her tenacity! The mystery wraps up in an exciting conclusion and an interesting revelation! I’m eager for the next book!

 

As with the first book, I thoroughly enjoyed Stephanie Németh-Parker’s narration! Her smooth, calm voice is perfect for Capri! She did well with all voices, male and female in a variety of ages, seamlessly making each distinct.

My Thoughts:

Capri became interested in true crime when she discovered her grandfather was convicted as a serial killer nicknamed: Overkill Bill. Her father has always refused to talk about it, and so Capri always did research under the radar. However, when a copycat emerges and Capri is implicated, she decides to investigate both cases, not only to clear her name and her daughter’s (also under suspicion), but also her grandfather’s.

 

I was a big fan of Capri, a hardworking single mother who turned her passion of true crime into a way to support her and her daughter, Morgan, now grown, by hosting tours that featured the history of crime and serial killers around San Francisco.

 

The Serial Killer Guide to San Francisco was superb! I was glued to the pages as Capri ferreted out clues and motivations both for the current murders and the past. I enjoyed her methodical approach to finding the killer and clearing her name. Capri ends up in danger by the end, and the mystery wraps up in a thrilling conclusion!

 

I also enjoyed the setting of San Francisco, mentions of film noir set in the city and some of its crime history! I hope we get more stories with Capri and Detective Pietro in the future! There are hints of a romance in the works and maybe they’ll work together solving crimes? *crosses fingers*

 

I alternately read an e-copy and listened to an audio version. I think you’d enjoy the story through either version. I’ve listened to and enjoyed Stephanie Németh-Parker’s narration in the past and her excellent performance enhanced my experience! I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed.

My Thoughts:

Jack Bruner has been searching for the West Campus Rapist for years. He’s long believed the perpetrator would escalate his crimes from rape to murder, so when the murder of a young woman matches the WCR’s MO Jack becomes even more desperate to catch him. Unfortunately, this criminal has been very careful about leaving an evidence trail. This is where Rowan comes in. In his desperation, Jack asks her to help find the killer’s identity.

As a forensic genealogist, Rowan can trace DNA back through a particular family tree and pinpoint the killer’s identity. She’s worked with the police in the past, but she was disturbed by the cases, and became burned out. Now Rowan tries to only take private cases where a person is trying to find out about or locate relatives for many different reasons. However, when she finds out that Jack is working to find the West Campus Rapist, she agrees. Rowan attended the college where the WCR attacked and assaulted a fellow student, and the event left a mark.

This case felt true to life, and it’s a crime that’s been committed over and over. Women, of course, are the targets. I was eager for this guy to be caught and brought to justice! I was on the edge of my seat as the story played out worried over the next potential victim!

I loved The Last Close Call! Laura Griffin features exciting new methods of solving crimes in her mysteries, like Rowan’s profession.  I find forensic genealogy fascinating, especially since it’s become such an important tool in solving real life crimes like the Golden State Killer. But The Last Close Call was more than just following clues to find a killer.  Jack and Rowan were both likeable and relatable characters, thrown together under dark circumstances. Although neither were looking for love there was an immediate attraction, instant chemistry, and I was fully on board with their romance!

I alternately listened to and read The Last Close call and recommend either version! Stephanie Németh-Parker’s performance was a wonderful, both female and male characters. I enjoyed her subtle Southern accent. I listened at my usual 1.5x normal speed.
