Sunday Post #127

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated reviewer book blog, and is a post to recap my bookish and non-bookish things from the last week.

I spent ten lovely days in Montana and while it was hot, it was beautiful!  I wasn't looking forward to going back to work last week. The work week dragged on and then to top things off I had two medical appointments on Friday: Mammogram and shingles vaccine. Both my husband and I had the first shingles vaccine (yes! there are two!) on Friday and then had a hellish time of fever, chills, and horrid body aches! For me it was worse than the Covid vaccine. I'm finally feeling a little better this morning, but wow! Here's some pics I took while hiking around where we stayed in Montana:

I didn't get much reading done as I was with grandkids on my trip and even just "relaxing" by the pool we had to keep alert. I did love all three books above. I listened to The Mountains Wild before A Distant Grave and I was happy I did since it's a series best read in order. Total recommend, and I just love the covers! A Thin Disguise is second in Catherine Bybee's Richter series, and I liked it even more than the first book!

I can't tell you how thrilled I was to get an audio copy of False Witness by Karin Slaughter! Kathleen Early narrates most of her books and I love her! I'm really looking forward to Last Seen Alone, too!

Watched:

I binge watched the third season of Virgin River and I'm done! The series has veered so far from the original plot lines, and I wouldn't mind that if it was good writing but this has become a drama (for dramas sake) filled soap opera that had me rolling my eyes non-stop and frustrated!  The writing is terrible, IMO! I just can't even. I'm stepping away from this hot mess before it ruins any love I have for the book series, which is one of my all-time favorites! Sorry if you're a fan, but just no!

How was your week?

Audio Review: The Anatomy of Desire by L.R. Dorn

Anatomy of Desire by L.R. Dorn
Publication Date: May 11th 2021 by Harper Audio
Pages: 320
Audio Book Length: 8 hrs 14 min
Narrators: Santino Fontana, Shelby Young, Marin Ireland, JD Jackson, Dan Bittner, Vikas Adam,
Gabra Zackman, Fred Berman, Darrell Dennis, Oliver Wyman, Jonathan Davis, Hillary Huber, Lisa Flanagan, Sharahn LaRue

My Thoughts:
When I started listening, I knew The Anatomy of Desire was based on the classic novel, An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser which was based on a real-life murder that happened in 1906. It was later made into the movie, A Place in the Sun.  I had never read it or seen the movie, so I had no idea what to expect.

Since listening, I went back and looked up the An American Tragedy and it’s surprising how faithful this reimagining is to the original tale, albeit modernized.  It’s funny how little things change in terms of human desire and emotions through the years. The story is timeless, tragic, and made for a riveting read! It had me thinking on it long after I finished.

Cleo Ray grew up dirt poor in a strict religious household, eager to leave that behind.  Now she’s a rising social media influencer coaching followers on body image, fitness, and life, and she’s hungry for success and fame. Unfortunately, her life choices make her the prime suspect in the murder of her friend, Beck Alden. The two go out on a canoe and only Cleo comes back. What exactly happened? The trial quickly turns into a media circus.

Cleo was very much a narcissist, and I was astounded by her actions, but at the same time I couldn’t help but feel for her. She’s finally on the cusp of everything she’s dreamed about and then it all comes crashing down around her. The trial being held in the small, conservative town of Independence didn’t bode well for her either. With its limited pool of jurors, I wondered if an impartial decision would be possible.

Fun fact for me: Independence is an actual California town that a friend of mine used to live in, which we would travel to and visit. It’s also on the way to Mammoth Mountain, a popular snow skiing spot we used to vacation at. The authors nailed it spot on with their descriptions!

The story is told in episodes, as a fictional docu-drama with recorded court testimony and interviews of the key players, performed by a whole cast of characters. It felt like one of those old radio-dramas my dad would listen to late at night, and I loved it! Several of the narrators I’ve listened to before and thoroughly enjoyed their performances here: Santino Fontana, Hillary Huber, Marin Ireland, Vikas Adam, and Dan Bittner. I couldn’t recommend the audio version more!

Book Description:

Performed docuseries style by a star-studded full cast including Santino Fontana, Shelby Young , Marin Ireland, JD Jackson, Dan Bittner, Vikas Adam, Gabra Zackman, Fred Berman, Darrell Dennis, Oliver Wyman, Jonathan Davis, Hilary Huber, and Lisa Flanagan

For fans of riveting true crime docuseries a la Serial and Making a MurdererThe Anatomy of Desire is a modern tale of crime and punishment exploring unbridled ambition, blinding passion, and the dark side of desire

Claire Griffith has it all, a thriving career, a gorgeous boyfriend, glamorous friends. She always knew she was destined for more than the life her conservative parents preached to her. Arriving in Los Angeles flat broke, she has risen to become a popular fitness coach and social media influencer. Having rebranded herself as Cleo Ray, she stands at the threshold of realizing her biggest dreams.

One summer day, Cleo and a woman named Beck Alden set off in a canoe on a serene mountain lake. An hour later, Beck is found dead in the water and Cleo is missing. Authorities suspect foul play, and news of Cleo’s involvement goes viral. Who was Beck? An infatuated follower? Were she and Cleo friends or lovers? Was Beck’s death an accident . . . or murder?

Told in the form of an immersive investigative docuseries, L. R. Dorn’s brilliant reimagining of Theodore Dreiser’s classic crime drama, An American Tragedy, captures the urgency and poignance of the original and rekindles it as a very contemporary and utterly mesmerizing page-turner.

Audio Review: A Distant Grave by Sarah Stewart Taylor

A Distant Grave (Maggie D'arcy #2) by Sarah Stewart Taylor
Publication Date: June 22nd 2021 by Macmillan Audio
Pages: 426
Audio Book Length: 12 hrs 33 min
Narrators: Marisa Calin
Source: Publisher
Rating: ½
Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | Audible | Goodreads

My Thoughts:
The story opens with Maggie dealing with some of the repercussions from the last story, and it’s not good. There seems to be a DA gunning for her, hampering her efforts to bring “someone” to justice. I’m being vague because of spoilers for the last book.

Maggie’s about to leave on vacation with Lilly, her fifteen-year-old daughter, and meet up with Conor back in Ireland when a man is found murdered on a beach in Long Island. When it’s discovered that he’s from Ireland, Maggie’s vacation turns into a bit of a work assignment. Why the man was in Long Island and who killed him? The connections are surprising and twisty!

There’s a lot going on, from the murder to Maggie’s problems with the DA, her issues with Lilly and her continuing relationship with Conor. I was fully invested in this “page turning” mystery and I didn’t want to stop listening so I could get to the bottom of so many things!

Ms. Stewart’s writing was beautiful, breathing life into her characters making it easy to relate and root for Maggie, Connor, Lilly and even Gabriel. The settings were vividly described, giving the story an eerie and atmospheric feel! I could almost feel the biting cold of Long Islands shores and see the rugged beauty of County Clare while listening.

A Silent Grave is a pleasing mix of police procedural/mystery/thriller and Maggie’s personal life. It’s a series best read in order. Even though the previous main mystery is solved, there are quite a few plot points unresolved and continued in A Silent Grave. Also, the romance started in the first book is ongoing and like most real-life relationships it’s not all smooth sailing. I’m 100% rooting for them!  I believe they’re a couple that can go the distance. I’m happy with how things are left at this point.

I think there will be more Maggie D’arcy mysteries coming, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!

I listened to the audio version of The Mountains Wild and A Silent Grave with Marisa Calin narrating.  I was impressed with her expertly performed Long Island and Irish accents! She switched back and forth effortlessly and they sounded authentic to me. I listened at 1.25x the normal speed.

4.5 Stars

Book Description:

In the follow up to the critically acclaimed The Mountains Wild, Detective Maggie D'arcy tackles another intricate case that bridges Long Island and Ireland.

Long Island homicide detective Maggie D'arcy and her teenage daughter, Lilly, are still recovering from the events of last fall when a strange new case demands Maggie's attention. The body of an unidentified Irish national turns up in a wealthy Long Island beach community and with little to go on but the scars on his back, Maggie once again teams up with Garda detectives in Ireland to find out who the man was and what he was doing on Long Island. As the strands of the mystery lead Maggie to a quiet village in rural County Clare and back to her home turf, they also lead her in range of a dangerous and determined killer who will do anything to keep the victim's story hidden forever.

With the lyrical prose, deeply drawn characters, and atmospheric setting that made The Mountains Wild one of 2020's most anticipated summer reads, Sarah Stewart Taylor delivers another gripping mystery novel about family, survival, and the meaning of home.

Spotlight & Review: A Thin Disguise by Catherine Bybee

A Thin Disguise (Richter #2) by Catherine Bybee
Publication Date: July 6th 2021 by Montlake
Pages: 347
Source: Publisher
Rating:

My Thoughts:
FBI agent, Leo Grant, is in Las Vegas to make sure the case against a Russian mobster goes off without a hitch. I was all for that since this mobster was a special kind of dirt bag who specialized in child prostitution/trafficking!   Little does Leo know that the star witness has her own guardian angel, Olivia, an ex-assassin trying to help good prevail. Their paths cross when a shooter takes aim at Olivia and Leo, and she’s shot.

Oliva wakes up injured in the hospital, with no memory of her past or how she got there. This is where Neil MacBain and his security team step in to help both Leo and Olivia get to the bottom of things while keeping everyone safe.  They do this by whisking Olivia out of Las Vegas and holing up in a secluded Colorado vacation home. Leo insists on accompanying the team to help investigate the shooting and help keep Olivia safe.

I don’t know what it is, but I love amnesia stories and the mystery it provides as the memories come back.  Here it was a way for Olivia to live like “normal” woman, unburdened by the memories of her prior dark, lonely life.  From the minute Leo laid eyes on Olivia he was attracted but getting to know her as they’re away from danger allows that attraction to grow into more for both. Catherine Bybee knows how to write chemistry and the right amount of buildup, to lead into some hot scenes! Just the right amount to establish an irresistible, passionate connection between Leo and Olivia! But will that be enough when she regains her memories and real life trickles back in?

I’ve been a fan of Catherine Bybee since reading and loving her First Wives Club series, so I was thrilled to hear about this spinoff series! Leo and Olivia are characters from the previous book, Changing the Rules, but Olivia goes back even further as she was an important character in Say it Again, the last book in the First Wives Club series.  I think it’s best to at least read the previous book in this Richter series, Changing the Rules, before A Thin Disguise, but in a pinch, you could read it as a standalone and still enjoy the story. Both Richter novels are on Kindle Unlimited, read and listen for free if you belong to that program.

Excerpt:

"Fuck off, Grant," she said the second he got out.

He popped his truck and grabbed his bag. "You know, if you don't stop leaving after we make love, I'm going to start believing you really don't care."

She marched over. "I don't."

He met her between the two cards, reached out, and pulled her close. A quick kiss to her ticked-off lips. "Good morning." He left her staring and headed to the passenger side of her car.

"What are you doing?"

He looked over his shoulder as if the answer were obvious. "Taking two cars is a waste of fuel. And since we're going in the same direction..." He opened the door to the back seat, threw his bag in.

She marched up, grabbed the bag...and tossed it out. "We're not doing this."

He picked it up, tossed it in...pressed one finger to her chest to back her up, and closed the door. "Yes. We are."

She glared. "You're really starting to get on my nerves."

"I know."

He opened the door and encouraged her to get in. "I can drive. You don't look like you got any sleep last night."

She walked around him, her middle finger in the air, and climbed into the driver's side.

Leo laughed and took the passenger seat.

As soon as they were on the road, he texted Jax, told her to come and get the car.

"How did you know where I was?"

Claire!

"I can't tell you all my secrets until you stop running away."

Leo noticed her white knuckles as she gripped the steering wheel. "What did Charlie tell you?"

"Who was the shooter?"

She looked over her shoulder, grunted.

"I took care of you two to one last. You owe me."

"I faked it."

He busted out laughing.

Olivia said something in a language he didn't understand.

"The way a woman moans and cries...that can be faked. But the way your body pulsates around my—"

"Shut up, okay?" She hit the wheel.

Book Description:
A former gun for hire and a federal agent find themselves on the right side of love but the wrong end of a bullet in this Richter installment from New York Times bestselling author Catherine Bybee.

On a fateful night in Las Vegas, FBI agent Leo Grant is working on a critical detail in a high-profile child prostitution trial when a beautiful woman jumps into the path of a bullet meant for him. Little does Leo know that the woman is Olivia, an ex-assassin who is seeking redemption one good deed at a time.

One minute, Olivia is lunging in front of Leo on the Vegas Strip. The next, she’s waking up in the hospital in a haze of pain with no memory of her past, her enemies, or even her own name.

With Olivia suffering from memory loss and completely unaware of the danger she is in, it’s up to Leo and Neil MacBain’s team of operatives to keep her safe. With Olivia and Leo both unaware of her past crimes, the two have little reason to avoid their growing attraction. Slowly her past seeps in through the cracks as she struggles to find the answers of who she is. 2021 Mid-Year Audiobook Challenge Check-In

I can't believe half the year is gone already, but this is my Mid-Year Check-In for my 2021 Audiobook Challenge hosted by Caffeinated Reviewer  again & That's What I'm Taking About. Thank you ladies!

I only signed up for two challenges this year: My Goodreads Reading Challenge and this one. I'm not very good at keeping track of challenges so I just go with the easiest ones. Low stress that way.

This year I signed up for The 100 Club Audiobook Addict again. Last year I failed at meeting my goal, but this year I think I'll make it as I'm already at 50 books and I have a lot more planned audios to read coming up.

Summary

Emery has never felt more alone. Raising her daughter is both her pleasure and her pain as she struggles to hold on to her job as a bartender and keep a roof over their heads. With no one to help them—no support system—any unexpected expense or late bill could turn their whole world upside down.

Reeling from the death of his twin brother and bandmate, rock star Oliver Smith is trying to drink his problems away. Apparently he isn’t very good at it; they follow him wherever he goes. Also in hot pursuit are the paparazzi, who catch Oliver at his lowest low.

He could have walked into any bar in California, but he walked into hers. Emery helps Oliver lose the crowd, and they find themselves alone: two people whose paths are marked with loss and pain. However, they hold an unshakable hope for healing. They find solace together, but can their love withstand the world?

Author Brittainy Cherry Writes Her Own Mixtape:

Hi, Everyone! I’m Brittainy Cherry, author of The Mixtape, a contemporary romance novel. I am so excited to share Oliver and Emery’s story with you all. These two characters are both struggling through life in their own ways, and it is through music and love that they find their way back to themselves and each other.

The Mixtape could’ve never come together without my own mixtape of sorts to help guide the way to this novel. Music not only plays a huge role in the story, but also in my personal life, so of course I had to whip up my own mixtape as I wrote this story. For example, my playlist began with “Godspeed” by the extremely talented James Blake that set the mood of the story. His tones and lyrics wrapped me up into a warm hug and I allowed the song to move me as I crafted Oliver’s character.

Then, we moved into “Soldiers” by Rachel Platten which is a powerful song about taking moments to breathe in order to move forward for another day, like soldiers in the night. It’s a song that showcases the strength of our heroine, Emery, who is a single mother, trying her best to create a better life for her young daughter.

I had the best time tying in songs like “Slow Dance” by AJ Mitchell (feat. Ava Max) to show the slow burn between Emery and Oliver falling together, followed by their first kiss being written to the song, “Can I Kiss You?” by Dahl.

The whole story was wrapped up with a classic, “Could It Be I’m Falling In Love” by the Spinners, which sums up what I hope you experience reading this novel: a mixtape of emotions which lead to you falling in love with the love story of Emery and Oliver. I hope this novel heals you the same way music soothes my soul.

The Mixtape Excerpt

Sometimes the world didn’t make sense. No parent should’ve ever had to bury their own child. I couldn’t even imagine that kind of pain that raced through her heartbeats on a daily basis. If I could offer up only one set of prayers for the remainder of my life, it would be for the parents who had to say goodbye too early on to their own.

Those hearts would always beat a little slower in my mind.

“I’m so sorry, Michelle.”

“Thank you, sweetheart.” She reached out and patted my hand, and I knew it was because she needed a hand to hold. So, I wrapped both of mine around hers. “The mourning doesn’t get easier. It just get quieter. Some days, I still cannot get out of bed, but I’m blessed. Because Richard stays in bed with me and my quietness. Then, when it’s time for me to get up, he pulls me to my feet, and we dance. A piece of advice—find yourself a man who would dance with you even when your heart is broken.” Her eyes flashed with tears and she held my hands tighter. “You want to know a secret?”

“Yes.”

“I thought I was going to lose Oliver, too. He kept everyone so far away. So, when I flew out here, I prepared myself for the worst. I thought he’d be in a drunken slumber or, worse…so much worse. Last time I came a few weeks ago, he wasn’t doing too well. But this time? This time I came back and he’s smiling.”

“That’s so good.”

She smiled brightly up at me as tears freely danced down her cheekbones. “So thank you.”

“I didn’t do anything,” I swore.

“You’re the only difference in his life since I came back. Plus, there’s the way he looks at you when you’re not looking. Now, sweetheart, I don’t know what you did, but I’m almost positive that you helped bring my son back to life after he was holding death’s hand. Call it my mother’s intuition. So, thank you for helping him. Even if it’s just by being his friend.”

Now I was tearing up, and I pulled her into a tight hug. “You’re an amazing mother,” I whispered, and she began to cry harder.

“You have no clue how hard it is to believe that each day.”

I think all mothers thought that. The ones who doubted her mothering skills, were sometimes the ones who were trying their best day in and day out. I didn’t expect the conversation with Michelle to go the direction that it had, but I was glad it had taken that path, because it was clear we both had some healing corners of our heart that had to be touched that evening.

“Oh, don’t tell me you two are wine drunk and emotion,” Richard cut in, walking in our direction. “We were just picking out a song for two seconds and we turn around to find you both moping.”

“Oh hush, Richard. Can’t us girls have a moment every now and again?” Michelle remarked, standing to her feet.

“Yes, but for now, we dance to The Spinners, my lady.” Richard reached out for his wife and took her into his arms as they began swaying to the song, Could It Be I’m Falling In Love. Richard serenaded Michelle as she smiled and melted into him like a perfectly fit puzzle piece.

Oliver came to stand beside me as we both watched his parents fall more and more in love with one another.

“This was their wedding song,” Oliver mentioned. “Dad recorded it, and they danced to it for their first dance.”

“Oh my gosh, how sweet is that,” I swooned. True romance.

“They dance to it every single night. On the good days and bad days. Especially on the bad days.”

“They’re what I want my love to look like,” I confessed. Oliver gave me a tight smile but didn’t say anything. I shifted around for a minute before looking toward him once more. “Do you want to dance with me?”

My Thoughts:
Addie and Dylan fell madly in love over a Summer in France, but things fell apart spectacularly. Neither has really moved on, and right from the beginning I could tell these two had that special romance that only comes along once in a lifetime.

Now, almost two years since the breakup they’re both on the way to a mutual friend’s wedding when trouble strikes, and they up stuck together in a cramped car ride to Scotland. Addie and Dylan must confront mistakes from the past while on the inside they still long for each other.

The story alternates between Addie and Dylan in the present and then in the past. How they fell in love and what led to the breakup is slowly revealed. I wondered what went horribly wrong and my heart hurt for these two to find a way back to each other.

Certainly, Dylan’s best friend Marcus, a total asshole in the past, was a huge part of their breakup. I couldn’t stand the guy, and I suspected early on one of the reasons he was such a colossal jackass! Did Marcus improve in the present? Well, you’d have to read to find out. More important though was Dylan and Addie’s handling of the situation.

The Road Trip was a bit angsty and really pulled at my heart strings, but it was also pretty laugh-out-loud funny in parts! I alternately read and listened to the audio version, and I couldn’t stop reading once I picked up the story! I had to know what happened to break these two up when they were so in love in the past and obviously still in love in the present.

The audio version was fantastic with Josh Dylan and Eleanor Tomlinson performing Dylan and Addie’s POVs. Loved their English accents!

Book Description:
What if the end of the road is just the beginning?

Four years ago, Dylan and Addie fell in love under the Provence sun. Wealthy Oxford student Dylan was staying at his friend Cherry's enormous French villa; wild child Addie was spending her summer as the on-site caretaker. Two years ago, their relationship officially ended. They haven't spoken since.

Today, Dylan's and Addie's lives collide again. It's the day before Cherry's wedding, and Addie and Dylan crash cars at the start of the journey there. The car Dylan was driving is wrecked, and the wedding is in rural Scotland--he'll never get there on time by public transport.

So, along with Dylan's best friend, Addie's sister, and a random guy on Facebook who needed a ride, they squeeze into a space-challenged Mini and set off across Britain. Cramped into the same space, Dylan and Addie are forced to confront the choices they made that tore them apart--and ask themselves whether that final decision was the right one after all.
