My Favorite Non-Review Books: October 2021

 As a blogger sometimes writing reviews can feel like a chore so it seems I rarely write reviews for non-review books anymore. I feel bad about that, because it's not that I didn't enjoy them less than the books I review here, just that I don't have the time or energy to write a review for each and every book I read. I thought it would be nice to list my favorite non-review books each month to bring more attention to them.

Here are my October 2021 stand outs:

5 Star all the way! Definite Schitt's Creek, (a series I totally love) vibe here!

Tied with Kiss of Snow for favorite in the series.

Kaleb and Sahara's story exceeded my expectations! Don't want to spoil anything, but finally! Can't wait to see how everything plays out after that stunning conclusion! I'm already listening to the next one and loving it!

Atmospheric and spooky! Perfect Fall read! 

Riaz and Adria were great, but I think I was more captivated by all that's happening with the ongoing story arc with the Psy and Silence and all the players.

My Thoughts:

Roxy has hit rough times and is the cliché starving actress struggling to land a job. In order to make ends meet, she takes a job singing telegrams, but never thought she’d have to sing a song in honor of a man’s, ahem, manliness, in a bunny suit, no less! No, that’s not humiliating at all…

When Louis opens the door and sees a hot bunny on his doorstep, he at first thinks he’s hallucinating. He gets a song of praise for his endowments, and you’d think that make a guy happy, but not so much when it’s a judgmental, sexy bunny singing the song. And not so much when you’re instantly attracted to the sexy, sassy bunny because having your one night stand send a singing telegram to your manhood doesn’t exactly make the best first impression:

"Why? If you like what you see, will you invite me inside? You haven't even showered off the last girl yet."  He actually had the grace to look a little ashamed. “I—“

Roxy didn’t give a shit about his answer. “Would you expect me to be flattered?” She clutched her chest dramatically. “Please, oh keeper of the golden penis, let me worship at your flawless phallus.”

Lol!  So, yes, not the best first impression there, but they do manage to share a smoldering kiss. Sounds like a weird thing to happen, but it works in this context, and Louis can’t get Roxy out of his mind.  Soon he’s chasing her all over the city to win her over and make her give him a chance.

Roxy doesn’t want to get hurt, and Louis definitely seems like a love-them-and-leave-them type of guy, so she keeps her shields up just in case. That’s a little difficult when she starts to realize he’s not the manwhore she thought, but actually a nice guy.  I laughed at the whole roommates “syncing” scene where Louis came in and handled things like a pro with two broody and emotional females:

“What else you got in that bag, Mary Poppins?” Roxy’s curiosity got the best of her, so she hopped up on one of the kitchen stools and reached into the bag. “Three…no, four Snickers bars,” she announced. “A bottle of wine. Tylenol. People magazine.” She peered further into the bag. “And Bridesmaids on DVD.”

Louis realizes that the way they met would make Roxy doubt his intentions, but he’s determined to change her opinion.  He wants to get close, get to know Roxy, wedge himself into her heart bit by bit, because no one has ever affected him the way she does.

I adored Chase Me! It was such a fun and sexy story. The clever banter, the deeper emotions and the amazing sexual tension all added up to a satisfying romance. Roxy and Louis get to know each other better, all the while sharing lusty kisses, and passionate encounters. Tessa Bailey excels at writing super hot sex scenes, but she definitely built up my anticipation, making me hot and bothered in the process!

I love Tessa Bailey’s writing and I’ve already got the next installment, Need Me, locked and loaded on my kindle!

My Thoughts:

Reading the description for Owned by Fate you’d expect for it to be a fiery hot romance, and it was, but I didn’t expect some of the tender and heartbreaking emotions I felt.  A steamy romance is always welcome but I appreciate it when an author makes me feel for the characters, and makes it more than just sex.  Tessa Bailey pulled that off brilliantly here.

Caroline must write an opinion piece on Serve, a successful bar/BDSM club that caters to a lifestyle she looks down on with every fiber of her being.  But her brother convinced her to write the article to help her family’s floundering magazine and business. As part of her research, Caroline visits the club expecting to be disgusted but instead she’s intrigued and a bit overcome.  She meets Jonah, the Serve’s owner, and her attraction to this forbidden man is overpowering.  He convinces her to go against her better judgment and find out exactly what happens upstairs in the exclusive part of the club.

Jonah has no idea Caroline is there to write an article on his club, he just knows that the minute he spied her on the club’s security feed upstairs he had to come down and meet her. It’s immediately apparent that Caroline’s there with the intention of hating everything about the lifestyle he embraces, but he senses her conflicted feelings.  As much as Caroline wants to despise his club, Jonah can tell she’s a little thrilled by what she’s labeled as deviant.

Caroline was so judgmental through much of this story, and even though I was frustrated a few times with her, the flashes of guilt and honesty made me more tolerant.  I could see the gradual shift in her opinions as she got to see “the man” Jonah instead of just her preconceived ideas. Through it all Caroline had sympathy others feelings, especially Jonah, and so it was easy to like her.   

I completely adored Jonah. He wasn’t your typical “dominant” you’d find in a BDSM novel.  Yes, he liked to dominate in the bedroom behind closed doors, but that was hardly the main feature of his personality.  He was sweet, and caring with a vulnerable side.  Jonah is intensely attracted to Caroline, she has a pull on him like no other, but at the back of his mind is the fact that she wants him in spite of herself. Caroline makes it clear that she takes no pleasure in the fact that she’s drawn to him and his lifestyle, and this hurts him, makes him feel less for his tendencies. 

There were sexy times that had me squirming in my seat. Tessa Bailey knows how to write scenes that could light your panties on fire! 

“If I sit across from you much longer, I’m going to pull you astride my lap and kiss your superbly formed mouth until you soak straight through my pants.—“It wouldn’t take long, sweetheart.  I can do amazing things with my tongue.”

I enjoyed the steam, but I loved witnessing Jonah gradually burrow his way into Caroline’s heart and mind, even more.  I don’t think there’s a female out there that could resist his pull. 

Owned by Fate was a sizzling romance with a strong emotional pull to make you root for Caroline and Jonah’s HEA!  Another win by Tessa Bailey!

My Thoughts:

Baiting the Maid of Honor is a story where opposites attract, sparks fly, and sheets ignite!  But more than that, there’s a heartfelt romance at the center.

Julie Piper is a sweet, proper Southern girl spending the next six nights in a Colorado making sure her best friend’s wedding goes off without a hitch.  When she encounters the dark and dangerously handsome Reed her brain tells her to run, but her body is sending entirely different signals. Reed sends her pulses racing with his very naughty, dirty mouth.  Julie’s shocked by his brazenness, but she’s also secretly thrilled.  When her fellow bridesmaids commit to a dare to each pick and seduce one of the groomsmen, Julie picks the best man to seduce thinking this will put any improper thoughts of Reed out of her head.

Julie is far from Reed Lawson’s usual pick.  He doesn’t go for the good girl, cheerleader types, but there’s something simmering beneath Julie’s layers of perfect, and Reed can’t resist. When he overhears her plot to sneak in and seduce another groomsman there’s no way he’s going to allow that to happen.  

I love a romance where the couple is powerless to resist the physical and emotional pull they have on each other.  Reed’s determination and relentless pursuit was such wicked fun! Reed is one delicious, bossy, dirty talking man! Julie’s all deer-in-the-headlights at first, but this girl has some spunk in her, too, leading to a sexually charged push and pull between these two!

Julie and Reed were opposites, Julie’s always strived to live up to everyone’s expectations, make everyone happy, and Reed is a guy who for the most part doesn’t care what anyone thinks.  Reed definitely pushed Julie’s buttons and drove her crazy, but he seemed to tap into the Julie underneath it all, the real honest Julie.  Julie had a profound effect on Reed, too.  He’s always kept walls up, and didn’t think he was capable of needing or giving tenderness, until Julie comes into his life.

“You said in the forest, you don’t know who you are with me. I hated it at the time. But the truth is, I don’t know who I am with you, either. I only know I’m so much better. Stronger. Happier.”

These two definitely encounter some bumps in the road trying to figure things out, but I loved their heartfelt, passionate journey!  Tessa Bailey is an expert in creating believable, intense chemistry between her characters which make her novels panty melting HOT! Baiting the Maid of Honor was no exception.

Julie and Reed’s story is part of the Wedding Dare series. Baiting the Maid of Honor is one of four romances happening simultaneously, and my interest was definitely piqued enough to pick up the other stories!

My Thoughts:

Winning a trip to Ireland couldn’t have come at a more perfect time for nineteen year-old Willa.  She’s happy to escape Chicago and head to Ireland after breaking up with her boyfriend of two years, Evan. The two were opposites: Evan was the sweet wholesome, jock-type whereas Willa is all-black wearing, rough around the edges girl. Coming to the realization that she was losing herself by trying to fit into Evan’s world doesn’t erase the pain or the guilt from ending things.  

However, her stay in Ireland is going to be anything but restful with Shane Claymore in the picture.  The arrogant, hostile, and oh-so-gorgeous owner of Claymore Inn pushes just about every one of her buttons, and these two knock heads on sight!

“And my Shane? You’ve run into him, have you?”

“Oh, yes.”

“Right.” Suddenly, she looked lucid. Not to mention highly amused at my abrupt answer.

“Well, don’t go planning the wedding just yet.”

“Oh, I wouldn’t worry about that. Unless the reception involves a cage match.”

In spite of his repellant qualities, Willa can’t help but get sucked into his family drama even as she fights her growing attraction to him.  Without meaning to Willa gets to know Shane and finds they are kindred spirits of sorts.  But she’s going back to America in one month, and Shane’s going back his car racing and leaving the Inn behind.  If Willa gets beyond wanting to simultaneously smack Shane and tear his clothes off and ravage him, how could things even work out?  

Tessa Bailey had me cracking up with Willa’s acerbic wit and humor! A hate-to-love romance is a favorite of mine and I just loved the push and pull between Willa and Shane!  Willa is a runner, and the queen of avoidance but this doesn’t deter Shane at all, in fact it excites him:

“Having to chase you only makes me want to pin you down.”

Yes, please!

While I enjoy these antics, I was thrilled when Willa allowed herself to be caught. Shane and Willa just got each other, and I loved that he found Willa perfect just the way she was, not for who he thought she could become.

Tessa Bailey deftly created sexual tension and steamy scenes without every page being sex, sex, sex.  She wrote a HOT romance without sacrificing story. Bravo! Fans of her adult series, Line of Duty will be pleased to see Willa end up happy, and get a glimpse of Ginger and Derek going strong.

My Thoughts:

Tessa bailey has become my new go-to-author if I want a story to light my insides ON FIRE and capture my heart with a sweet romance, as well. 

Story Brookes flies out to New York from California when she gets the call that her father, a big time hostage negotiator, suffered a heart attack. Leaving California is not a hard decision because her fiancé has just dumped her two weeks before the wedding (jerk!). What she doesn’t count on is instant attraction and chemistry with her father’s protégé, Daniel. He’s the good at his job, being a cop and brilliant hostage negotiator, but he’s also a notorious womanizer.  Story has no plans of getting involved but the instant sexual tension Daniel ignites is impossible to ignore.  She’s only in New York for a short time, so what’s the harm in taking advantage of Daniel’s well-honed skills? She deserves pleasure and excitement after being dumped by her fiancé.  She wonders how come that doesn’t hurt more.

Daniel has had meaningless one-night stands for as long as he can remember.  When he meets his mentor’s daughter, Story, he can’t explain the way she affects him.  The way she gets him and the all consuming passion she ignites in him. Story is about to knock his socks off and shatter all his walls of protection, too. When Jack makes it abundantly clear he stay away from Story or face the removal of *ahea* certain appendages, Daniel tries to comply. 

Have a mentioned Tessa Bailey is my new queen of Alpha Males?! When I want a bossy, possessive hot Alpha male, I just need to pull up one of her stories and my wish is granted! Daniel was all of that with a sad past and vulnerability that will make you want to kiss it all better! Story was a girl after my heart, too. Being dumped by her fiancé two weeks before the wedding!! Who does that?!! That’s okay, because she has Daniel to make her forget!

This was a quick, read only about 200 pages but boy does it pack a punch. Fiery hot spice and a sweet romance neither wants to acknowledge. This Story is oh-so-good! Oh-so-scrumptious!!I’m putting Tessa Bailey on my “auto-buy” list.

My Thoughts:

Oh boy, did this story get me hot and bothered!! I wasn’t expecting this to be such a scorcher!! If you want a SMOKING HOT read with a dominant, possessive, and bossy man, look no further! His Risk to Take will push all your buttons!

 

Troy had just moved to New York from Chicago after losing his partner on the force, Grant, in a sting gone bad.  He’s crushed every time he thinks of Grant, and the family he left behind.  Troy feels responsible.  While out a at bar with his new police buddies he can’t stop thinking about the tragedy until a black-haired, green-eyed beauty walks in, and proceeds to hustle some sucker at pool.  He can’t take his eyes off her body as she executes an expert game.  Troy steps in to save her when the sore loser looks like he’s about to get violent. Things heat up between these two after that rather quickly: 

 

 

“After watching the show you just put on, I have a lot of things in mind.” One hand left the bar to brush her hip. Ruby couldn’t stop herself from backing up, bringing her body flush against his.  Troy hummed in satisfaction at her boldness. “Next time you bend over a table, I’m going to wrap all that hair around my fist and pull your head back. I want to watch your eyes as I ---- you into oblivion.”

But Ruby doesn’t plan on losing her head.  She’s even more reluctant when she finds out Troy is a cop.  However, Troy isn’t about to take any brush off from Ruby, and if she thinks so, she has another thing coming!  Her heart secretly soars at his persistence.   But when Troy finds out that Ruby is connected to a dangerous case he’s working on, he’s not sure being involved with him won’t get her killed.  He’s torn between letting her go to keep her safe, or locking her away in his protective custody.  (I know which I vote for!)

 

Ms. Bailey definitely has a talent for writing a prime Alpha-male!! Troy wasn’t the flowers and hearts sort of guy, but his protective and caring side more than made up for it.  I loved his dirty mouth and bossy ways.  And a man in uniform, who can resist?!!  Definitely not me!  
 

Ruby was a great character as well.  She’s not one to wallow in self-pity.  Even though she came from a shady background she is trying to pull herself out of that lifestyle, and has managed to secure a promising future on her own.  When she figures out how much she cares about Troy, she’s willing to put her safety on the line to make sure he’s okay. 

 

If you’re a fan of Kristen Ashley’s type of Alpha-male (maybe a little less caveman than KA’s), I would definitely pick this up because you are in for a treat!  I breezed through this story and found myself sorry when I got to the last page.  I highly recommend Ms. Bailey’s addictive, fun and spicy writing!  This is the second in the Line of Duty series, but it’s not necessary to pick up the first to enjoy this.   I didn’t read it before picking this up, and it was not an issue.  Although, after finishing this I quickly picked up Protecting What’s His and I’m currently 21% in and LOVING it!  Brandie loved reviewed it on the blog back in April.  You can read her review here.
