Top Ten Tuesday: Mainstream Popular Authors that I Still Have Not Read

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme hosted by The Artsy Reader where each week they post a new top ten list and ask fellow bookish folk to share their lists on that topic.

This week: Mainstream Popular Authors that I Still Have Not Read:

J.K. Rowling:
Yep, never read the Harry Potter series. I've watched the movies, though.

Stephen King:
Technically I've read one book, but it was a novella a while back. Would love to start his Holly series.

John Grisham:
I've watched plenty of movies based on his books, but never read him.

George R.R. Martin:
Never read his books and haven't watched the series. I probably won't either. From what I've heard it's too intense for me.

Anne Rice:
Watched Interview with the Vampire about a million years ago, but never had the desire to read the books.

Diana Gabaldon:
I started Outlander a long while back, before Goodreads, but lost interest. I haven't watched the TV series either.

Jane Austen!
Can you believe this?! I really need to read Pride & Prejudice. I've watched so many film adaptations of her books. Never get tired of seeing them.

James Patterson:
This is another one where I've technically read him, but it was a co-written with Bill Clinton. Not sure if that counts. He co-authors a lot of books and I wonder how much he is writing.

Charlaine Harris:
Never read any of her Sookie Stackhouse books and I only watched a couple of the episodes of the TV series.

Elin Hilderbrand:
I've seen her books all over the place. I'm just never all that motivated to pick one up. She does sound like an author I'd probably like.

Have you read any authors on this list?

  1. I haven't read Pride and Prejudice either (despite loving the story). I did finish Sense and Sensibility years ago though. So maybe someday I'll try another of her books. :)

    1. I really want to since I love all her film adaptations and have watched them over and over.

  3. I should be adding Elin Hilderbrand to my list, too.

  4. I really struggled with Jane Austen's work at one point, and then tried again at some point when I was sick and something clicked. I'll never be a huge Austen fan, but suddenly I saw the point! I started with Northanger Abbey, though.

    Here's my TTT.

    1. I probably won't read her, but I know a lot of people love her books.

  7. A great list. For Austen Persuasion is an underrated book, plus it is short! I am currently reading my first James Patterson. I'm enjoying it so far!

    Have a great week!

    1. Oh, good to know, Emily! I do love the story on film. I've watched several versions. Nice to hear about Patterson. I think I'll like his books.

  8. Oh, good, it's not just me who has failed to read what everyone says is "required" reading!

  11. I was a pretty big Martin fan there for a while but my interest has waned as the years have gone by...

  12. I started Interview With a Vampire once but ended up DNF-ing it. I have read books by Grisham, King, and Patterson. And I love all of Jane Austen's books...and Harry Potter! Those books are seven of my favs. :D

  13. Goes to show you that we'll never run out of interesting books to add to the pile. I've got so many well-known mainstream authors I haven't read yet, too.

    1. That's a good thing! I hope we never run out of books we want to read. :)

  14. OMG! We have so much overlap. I am not alone! I did read a book by Patterson (it was a sick-kid YA, made me cry), and one by Elin Hilderbrand (I heard she is the queen of the beach read)

    1. I've read him technically too but it was a co-author with Bill Clinton. I'd like to read one of his earlier books. I know Ethan enjoys them.

  15. I've read at least one book by six of these authors. Not too bad! Anne Rice was hugely popular when I was a teenager, but I've never read anything by her and I doubt I ever will, honestly.

    Happy TTT!

  16. I haven't read Harry Potter either. I think that surprises people more than anything else. I will someday.

  17. Your words were both powerful and thought-provoking. Thanks for sharing!

  18. Great list, Rachel. I should do this prompt today after reading everyone else's as I now have ten that I couldn't come up with yesterday. I haven't read George R.R. Martin, Anne Rice, Diana Gabaldon or Charlaine Harris. I have seen a lot with authors I had not heard of, but I know all of these ones.

    1. Yes, I saw a lot of authors I hadn't heard of either on these posts. Not sure how mainstream they are then, lol!

  19. I read Harry Potter as a kid and loved it, but would no longer recommend anything JK Rowling due to her transphobic views. I'm not really a big horror reader so Stephen King never appealed, and though I've watched the TV shows for both Game of Thrones and Outlander, I've avoided the books due to their sheer size!

    1. I've watched the Harry Potter movies, but to be honest I don't think I'll ever read the books. I'm just not interested enough. I want to read King's Holly series which I've heard is more mystery. Yeah, I'll probably never read Outlander or Game of Thrones. Not sure I'd ever watch the shows either.

  20. WAIT! You have never read the HP books? They are awesome just sayin'. Way better than the movies, although they did a good job with the films! Love Rowling.

  21. I've read about half of the authors on your list. Some of them have been years ago, though.

  22. I'm surprised that I've read 8 of these authors! I wouldn't say any are what I would consider favorites, but I have read most of these authors at one time. :)

  23. Of the list you provided. I did read/listen to the Harry Potter series. The narrator for this series is awesome. He has an amazing range for children, females, and the other. Anyway back to where I was heading. I did dabble a bit with Anne Rice. Interview with a Vampire was a better listen than the movie. I think I preferred her Beauty Trilogy. Intense, erotic, and maybe a little forbidden until you view it for the time period it was set in. Jane Austen I have not fully completed one of her stories. If it wasn't for the movies' I may not have known the extent of her library. Now, I really want to read a story from Elin Hilderbrand. I have a few in my library, but have not even picked them up. Diana Gabaldon is also on my to read list. I have four or five of her books on my library shelf. As for Stephen King, James Patterson, John Grisham, and George R R Martin. I have no real desire to read any of their books. I see that interest and the following. They just do not appeal to me in that way to pick up and read or listen to.

  24. I didn't know about Rice's other series. That might be good. I would like to read at least one Austen. I would also like to read Stephen King, Patterson, and Grisham. The others I'm okay to keep status quo.

  25. I get Grisham, he is not for everyone. But no Rowling? Whaat?
