Sunday Post #187

The Sunday Post is hosted by Kimberly @ Caffeinated reviewer book blog, and is a post to recap my bookish and non-bookish things from the last week.

We've had cold temps with the highs in the upper 40s and quite a bit of rain. We were worried about snow so I stocked up on a lot of food items and we bought 2 cords of wood so if the power went out we'd have plenty of wood. We have a generator that is hooked up to our propane tank that can power the whole house, but it's nice to have other ways to heat the house. We have our woodstove burning most evenings.  Apparently, last winter they had a bad storm here that knocked the power out for 2 weeks! So I wanted to be prepared, but we've only had rain so far.

It was 27 degrees (Fahrenheit) when I left for work on Tuesday and 29 when I left on Friday, but as it wasn't raining I was just worried about ice on the roads. I drove really slow and didn't accelerate or brake quickly. Everything is covered in white frost when I wake up most days except today since it was a little warmer. It's been raining most of the day, still raining now.

Went and got my haircut and had to drive 45 minutes as my hairdresser moved from the shop I was going to which was only 25 minutes away from me. Her new place is really nice, but I was happy my hubby came along and drove (he dropped me off and went to Home Depot) because it rained pretty heavy the whole way there and back.

It's so hard to find someone you like for hair and even more so up here because it's smaller towns so I'll probably keep going to her even though it's a longer drive. My sister said she'll probably start looking on Yelp again. We go to the same hair dresser.

Two review books and two non-review. I enjoyed all of them. Catch Her in a Lie was a really short audio. 59 minutes on 1.5x speed. Entertaining little mystery for the car ride today. These Silent Woods was kind of riveting! Bronson Pinchot's audio performance was so good! A Very Merry Bromance was a fun grump vs. sunshine romance with the female as the grump for a change. I enjoyed Flirting With the Beast and it featured a mature couple (later 50s) which was nice for a change. I like to read about older characters finding happiness. I think you're never too old to enjoy life.

Received/Purchased/Library Lend:

Buried in a Good Book was an audio deal from Chirp. I just checked and it's still $1.99. I bought it after seeing Wendy's review of the second installment. Love the Pacific Northwest so I love reading books set there. Looking forward to all of these new additions.

I'm giving away a paperback copy of A Very Merry Bromance HERE.

How was your week?

  1. 2 weeks! Wow that's a long time. And 20's! You're getting temps like us lol. It's 27 here now and brrr. I like winter in its way but the cold temps get old quick. :)

I'm kind of interested in The Villa since I really liked the last book of her I read.

    1. Yes, high 20s at 7am, but it's warmed up a bit and now we're in the 40-50s. I guess it's been unusually cold here for this time of year. 2 weeks is a long time! I guess that's a fluke too, but I wanted to be prepared.

I'm looking forward to The Villa too! I like her last one. It was kind of crazy!

    1. Good to hear that! I'm excited to start the series as I've hear the 2nd one is even better than the first.

  3. OMG! I had no idea that cousin Balki narrated books. Look at that! Your weather sounds a lot like ours but I live in urban sprawl type suburbia. Very well lit, right on major highways. You planned well though - so smart generator and wood stove. I was looking at those Porter books. It IS nice to see older couples in books. You have the new Broka-Wibberly book. I loved their YA, but that last adult one was not what I expected. I will keep an eye out for your review.

    1. I know, right? I was shocked at how authentically Southern his accent sounded. It was just a hint of an accent. Perfection!
Yes, we're out in a small mountain, old gold miners town and there are NO street lights! It's a little scary driving at night here and I make sure to have a light on outside when my husband gets in late from some of his business trips. I love not having the light pollution, though. The stars are incredible out here.
It'll be the first time I'm reading Broka-Wibberly. The publicists email hooked me. I hope it's good.

  4. Small towns are difficult. You have to plan your entire day around shopping or haircuts because it takes forever to get to those places! I don't think I could survive 2 weeks without power. Ours sometimes goes out for a day or two, which is annoying, but I can deal with it. Two weeks is too long.

    1. We can survive 2 weeks or more without power, but only because we heard about the disaster last winter and planned for it. I'd be a little stressed though. So far we haven't been without power for more than 8 hours. I'm going to keep going to my girl even though she moved because I like her and it's hard to find someone good and her shop is in an area close to a friend that just moved to Northern California. We'll probably visit and lunch with them when I have an appointment.

  5. That's why I don't like winter at all! Also I am so happy that you enjoyed these Silent Woods! And I agree: Bronson Pinchot did an amazing job narrating that story!

    1. I don't mind winter since they have real seasons out here it won't be long until spring. It doesn't snow here that much. I guess the snow we've already had is unusual for this time of year. I heard it usually doesn't start until end of December. He was amazing! So authentic. Loved it!

  6. Yay another audio listened that keeps it at a normal speed at 1.5. All these instagram and booktubers listen at 3x and I am like how?? haha

Yeah I don't mind winter as long as get lots of snow, if its just cold with no snow then its like not worth it haha But I love having seasons so I don't mind it most of the time. I hope you enjoy that Rachel Hawkins!

    1. Yes, I can't imagine at 3xs! It sounds like they're just trying to get through the book. I wouldn't enjoy the book at that speed. I love having the seasons, too! Such a change from Southern California. I'm looking forward to The Villa!

  7. I hate finding a new hair person. It's so difficult. Sorry about the rain and the cold. I am a big fan of snow though.

    1. I'm going to stick with the same girl. I don't want to look for someone new. I actually don't mind the rain and cold. Excuse to stay in and read. Not fun to drive in, though.

  8. I hope you stay warm. We used to have a wood stove when I lived in South Dakota, and I loved it. We only have a gas fireplace here, and we rarely use that. I hope you enjoy Buried in a good Book! It's such a fun series.

  9. The winter is settling in there. It's good you are prepared. You are reading some great books. I solved the hair issue by not cutting it the last 5 years and then only trimming it last year. It's easily to my waist and I just french braid it out of my way. I've thought about shorter hair but hate the idea of having it cut frequently but even more I don't want it in my face.

    1. That's one way to solve things! I have long hair, but I like layers and I get highlights to help hide the gray. I couldn't do that myself. I don't go that often, though.

  10. Getting used to the winter temps and driving conditions was stressful for me when I moved out here, but sounds like you're well prepped if you lose power or get snowed in. I'm hoping to read the new Jane Porter soon, loved the latest Bromance book, and glad your reading week was great.

  11. Let's hope you don't have any storms like that. Not having power for more than a couple of days would be hard if you don't have a generator.

    1. Yeah, I'd rather not have a huge storm and have the power knocked out for 2 weeks, but we'd be okay since we do have a generator.

    1. I know, right! I don't mind that weather if I don't have to drive to work. I actually love for a cozy vibe. So far nothing has been too bad and I think I'll cut my days back a bit in January where they have more snow.

  16. Wow, it's really turn cold there! Hope you don't experience any outages like they had last year, but good to be prepared. Your husband sounds like my husband - he can almost spend time in a Home Depot. :) I fear my stylist may be n the verge of quitting/retiring. I'm going to beg her to stay. LOL

  17. Everything is frost here too, But might actually start snowing now soon

  18. The longest that I have had to go without power is a week. It wasn't winter so it wasn't all that bad but I would hate to be without power for that long in the winter. I hope you have a great week!
