Book Blitz: The One Who Got Away by Ava Claire

The One Who Got Away
Ava Claire

(An Alpha Billionaire Romance)
Publication date: January 27th 2016
Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

It was supposed to be the best day. I was marrying the love of my life–and nothing would ever be the same. And then he left me at the altar.
Five years later, I get a job offer I can’t refuse. The trouble is, the boss just so happens to be the one who got away…

EXCERPT:
Even from behind, he was something to behold. He had on a black leather jacket with a charcoal gray hoodie. On anyone else, it would have looked juvenile, hipster even. Like someone emulating ‘rugged’ based on what they saw in a magazine or on some TV show. This guy was all man, all testosterone with his broad shoulders and jeans that gripped an ass that I was dying to grip.
Realizing that I was staring at some stranger’s behind, my eyes shot up to tamer territory, but his dark wavy hair was even more dangerous. It was just long enough that he could do that man-bun thing that was all the rage. But nothing about this man was forced. He didn’t follow trends; he made his own. His dark locks were wild and free.
I hadn’t even seen his face, but I knew he was trouble. With a capital T. Which meant I was in trouble, because if I wasn’t sure I was gonna take the job before, well, I was positive now.
“Oh! Mr. Carraway, I didn’t know you were on site today.”
I gasped.
No.
NO.
The allure, that instant draw…I should have known. It had only happened once before when I was partnered with the hottest guy at Rhoades High in Advanced Chem.
He turned from the espresso machine and I stopped breathing.
Lincoln Carraway smiled at me like a wolf about to rip out the throat of its prey.
“Welcome to Make a Change, Catherine.”

Review: Just Fall by Nina Sadowsky

Publication Date: March 22nd 2016 by Ballantine Books
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

Balanced on the razor edge of moral ambiguity, this sexy and seductive debut novel asks: How can you find out that the person you love is a killer…and continue to love him anyway? Perfect for fans of Karen Rose, Sandra Brown, and Erica Spindler.

On the night of her wedding to Rob, Ellie’s perfect world suddenly collapses. Her suave, charming, sophisticated husband is not the man she believed him to be. Could he really be a killer?

Ellie is rapidly swept into a lethal vortex of betrayal, lies, and uncertainty: Who is the man she married, really?

And how far will she go to protect him?

From Manhattan to the Caribbean, Rob and Ellie struggle to escape the grip of Rob’s former life - a life his employers are determined to ensnare him in for good.

When faced with a terrible choice—to become a murderess herself to save the man she loves, or to let him die—Ellie’s decision propels her into a whiplash-paced adventure, filled with cinematic twists and a startling sense of unease.

My Thoughts:
I’m currently addicted to romantic suspense. I can’t get enough lately. It has all the romance I crave without angsty, stupid relationship drama.  I enjoy the mystery, twists, action and danger!  Just Fall had plenty of danger and thrills, and a delicious romance I was rooting for from beginning to finish.

The story alternates between past and present starting out with a shocking scene in the present, and then working back and forth.

Rob and Ellie meet and fall in love, but both know/suspect there are some secrets to uncover about their pasts.  Rob’s are a bit darker than Ellie’s, but hers make it so she can relate to Rob. Neither pushes too hard to discover each other’s secrets, because each has something to hide, but events make it impossible to ignore the past any longer.

I really enjoyed this mystery. It took me a little bit to get into the rhythm of the story, because you’re thrown into the middle of things and have to settle in a bit before it truly takes off.  From the beginning I was wholeheartedly on board with Ellie and Rob’s romance. They seemed perfectly matched and supremely in love, and after their disastrous pasts I wanted nothing but happiness for their future. Even though their lives may have been less than moral before, I could understand their choices (sort of?) and make excuses.

I would’ve enjoyed the story a little more if I had more couple time in the present time chapters and if there were maybe not so many twists at the very end.  (Highlight for spoiler) I like to have things settled and get a little more couple time after all the craziness. (End of spoiler)

About Tessa
Tessa Bailey is originally from Carlsbad, California. The day after high school graduation, she packed her yearbook, ripped jeans and laptop, driving cross-country to New York City in under four days. Her most valuable life experiences were learned thereafter while waitressing at K-Dees, a Manhattan pub owned by her uncle. Inside those four walls, she met her husband, best friend and discovered the magic of classic rock, managing to put herself through Kingsborough Community College and the English program at Pace University at the same time. Several stunted attempts to enter the work force as a journalist followed, but romance writing continued to demand her attention. She now lives in Long Island, New York with her husband of eight years and four-year-old daughter. Although she is severely sleep-deprived, she is incredibly happy to be living her dream of writing about people falling in love.

Waves of Sunday #85: Where One Goes by B.N. Toler

Welcome to our weekly edition of Waves of Sunday where each Sunday we spotlight a book that has been making waves in the book scene or has simply caught our attention causing a riptide on our TBR.

Today we are spotlighting:
Where One Goes by B.N. Toler
Published March 18th 2015
What happens when the very thing ruining your life ends up saving it?

I was never one to believe in spirits—until six years ago, when a bone-chilling accident changed my life…forever.

My name is Charlotte, but most people call me Char…and I have a special gift.

I talk to the dead.

Make no mistake, I can’t summon them. I’m only able to see and speak to the spirits that linger when they’re unable to crossover. They’re somehow weighted to the world with unfinished affairs. And for the last six years, I’ve relentlessly used my gift to help their lost souls.

But it’s come at a price. My life is dark. Feeling despondent, I’ve begun to give up. And in helping the dead, I’ve realized I haven’t allowed myself to live. With no money, no place to go, and most importantly… no hope, I’ve decided there is only one option—to end it all.

But fate is a funny thing. One minute, I’m about to leap to my death, and the next, I’m saved by Ike McDermott. The strong, striking soldier stopped me from putting an end to my despair. He’s the kind of man that smiles and brightens an entire room.

Sweet and gentle.

He is my savior.

And he’s dead.

We’ve made an agreement. He’ll help me find a place to stay and a new job if I’ll help him with his unfinished business so that he may crossover.

Ike’s unfinished matter involves his twin brother, George. George has been falling apart since Ike’s death and Ike has not been able to compel himself to crossover in peace until he knows George will be okay.

When I agreed to help, little did I know that I’d fall in love with the charming folks of Bath County, and…Ike and George McDermott.

Now, as both brothers own equal parts of my heart, I am faced with a cruel and unfair predicament. In saving George, I must let go of Ike.

But how does one let go of half of their heart?

Arlene's Thoughts
This sounds so completely different than what I've been reading lately. After looking for something unique and out of the ordinary, I stumbled upon this one by B.N. Toler and the reviews looks pretty good!

Review: Cuff Me by Lauren Layne

Publication Date: March 29th 2016 by Forever
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

Meet New York's Finest-three hot brothers sworn to protect and serve the city they love . . . and the women who've stolen their hearts.

ARRESTED BY LOVE

Vincent Moretti is one of the NYPD's top homicide detectives-and one of the most eligible bachelors in town. His family, however, thinks he should date his longtime partner, Jill-a sassy, sexy, smart-mouthed blonde who drives him absolutely crazy.

Behind the quiet authority, tough-guy demeanor, and dark aviator glasses lies a man with a big soul-and a hard body that can soften any girl's heart. After years as his coworker, Jill Henley has given up hope that anything could happen between her and Vin. Besides, loving him would break all the rules. But seeing Jill with someone else triggers feelings in Vincent he never knew he had. Now he'll have to stop playing good cop/bad cop-and find a way to convince her to be his partner for life. . .

My Thoughts:
I’ve been looking forward to Vincent and Jill’s romance in Cuff Me, and it was shaping up to be my favorite of the three books so far.  I did love the relationship between them.  The bittersweet longing was palpable!  Being partners for the NYPD in the homicide division for the last six years made it so they knew each other like a seasoned married couple, and I love that history.  Jill wanted more, but never voiced her attraction to Vin, and while everyone could see that there was something more on Vin’s side, he never acknowledged the attraction.  As our story opens Jill is just about to come back from a three month leave of absence spent caring for her mother in Florida. After three months apart Vin is excited and anxious to have her back, only he gets the shock of his life when he finds out that Jill is engaged to another man.

I thought this served Vin right, because he had all this time with Jill before and never made a move. To me it was never a matter of Jill figuring out her feelings, she just never thought Vin would ever come around.  Jill wanted love, marriage and a family, and Tom seemed like her perfect match. Well, mostly.  When she gets back to New York and sees the Moretti’s doubts start creeping in.  Vin acts like a broody jerk, over her engagement, but still makes no declarations.

I’m a sucker for unrequited love, I’m always hoping that the couple opens their eyes and notice what’s been under their noses for so long.  So yeah, there was real potential for me to love Vin and Jill’s romance.  While I knew that eventually these two would come together (this is their romance, so no spoilers there) I was completely disappointed that it took sooooooo long!  The level of frustration I experienced at one point made me want to scream! I wanted to slap Vin upside the head!!  When I started Cuff Me I thought for sure this was going to be a 5 star rating for me, and I really did enjoy the slow burn and the ache of want, that was done really well, but the frustration level from the denials made it impossible for me to give it more than 3 stars.
