Excerpt:

She used her thumb to point to her guest. “This is Josh—he’s with me.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
She hated the way the agents insisted on calling her ma’am, as if she were seventy years old or something, but she’d chosen not to fight that battle. She wanted to say, if you can call me ma’am why can’t you call me Sam? Close enough, wasn’t it? But Nick had asked her not to make an issue of it, so she didn’t. But she wanted to.
“Have a seat.” She directed Josh to the sofa while she tossed her coat over the back of it. “I’ll be right back.”
“Okay.”
Sam dashed upstairs to their bedroom, anxious to see what was wrong with Nick, who’d been fine earlier. She found him in bed, curled into the fetal position, and was instantly concerned. Leaning over the bed, she pressed a kiss to his forehead, which was on fire. “Babe.”
“Mmm.”
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
“Don’t know. Was fine and then I wasn’t.”
“You’re burning up. Did you take something?”
“Couldn’t. Stomach.”
“I’m calling Harry.”
“No, I’m fine.”
“You’re not fine, and I’m calling Harry.”
He mumbled something that sounded like “don’t bother him,” but to hell with that. She was bothering him. Withdrawing her cell phone from her pocket, she found the number for one of their closest friends, who happened to be a doctor, and made the call.
“Madame Vice President,” Harry said. “To what do I owe the honor?”
“Nick is sick. Can you come over?”
“Sick with what?”
“I don’t know. He said it came on out of nowhere, and now he’s burning up and says his stomach hurts too bad to take anything.”
“Sounds like the flu. Keep your distance.”
“Way too late for that warning.” Sam winced when she thought of the sex they’d had last night and again this morning. Not getting too close to her husband was usually the last thing she wanted to do.

Review & Excerpt: The Angels' Share by J.R. Ward

Publication Link: July 26th 2016 by NAL
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo
About the book:

#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward delivers the second novel in her Bourbon Kings series—a sweeping saga of a Southern dynasty struggling to maintain a façade of privilege and prosperity, while secrets and indiscretions threaten its very foundation…

In Charlemont, Kentucky, the Bradford family is the crème de la crème of high society—just like their exclusive brand of bourbon. And their complicated lives and vast estate are run by a discrete staff who inevitably become embroiled in their affairs. This is especially true now, when the apparent suicide of the family patriarch is starting to look more and more like murder…

No one is above suspicion—especially the eldest Bradford son, Edward. The bad blood between him and his father is known far and wide, and he is aware that he could be named a suspect. As the investigation into the death intensifies, he keeps himself busy at the bottom of a bottle—as well as with his former horse trainer’s daughter. Meanwhile, the family’s financial future lies in the perfectly manicured hands of a business rival, a woman who wants Edward all to herself.

Everything has consequences; everybody has secrets. And few can be trusted. Then, at the very brink of the family’s demise, someone thought lost to them forever returns to the fold. Maxwell Bradford has come home. But is he a savior...or the worst of all the sinners?

Arlene’s Thoughts:

Death, debt and disorder…

The second installment of The Bourbon Kings picks up right where the series premier left off, and The Angels’ Share does not disappoint. J.R. Ward has definitely kept up the cadence of this series that is packed with tons of drama and plenty of intrigue.

As the story continues, the Bradford family is in complete disarray after the suicide of their patriarch, but as evidence comes to light and the full scope of the state of the family business is unraveled, the death of William Wyatt Baldwine suddenly becomes a murder investigation. Unfortunately, the middle son Lane is left to pick up the pieces and attempt to salvage what is left of the family’s bourbon empire.

Overall, I have to say I was glued to the pages of this novel. I truly enjoyed watching Lane and Lizzie’s steady romance remain strong throughout the story. There was so much chaos happening with the parallel storylines that is was nice to fall back on these main characters and see them persevere during a time of upheaval.

I enjoyed getting to know a few of the secondary characters a bit more, especially Samuel T., Mack and Shelby. They each carry their own storyline worthy of more airtime. I’m eager to see where Ward decides to take these characters in the next round.

As in the first novel, I felt sorry for Gin for many reasons. She is definitely the epitome of a broken character that deserves sympathy.  However, I have to commend her actions in the final chapters that prove she can be a force to be reckoned with. I truly hope she continues to find her footing and become a stronger character in the end.

Overall, I enjoyed this second installment, and I can’t wait to see where J.R. Ward takes us next. She’s definitely positioned the storyline to welcome more drama and chaos. Exciting!

Rachel’s Thoughts:
*********Spoilers if you haven’t read the first book**********
The Baldwin’s are definitely going through the ringer thanks to their horrid dad, William Baldwin! It’s a trial by fire, and we’re getting to see what each character is really made of.  Last we left off in The Bourbon Kings, William (Lane, Edward, Gin, and Max’s father) turned up dead, and Lane discovered the family’s finances were severely depleted.  I had thought The Angel’s Share would be mainly Edward and Sutton’s book since Lizzie and Lane’s romance is pretty much settled, but that was not the case. I think Lane and Lizzie are still the center of this series, dealing with the financial woes and death of William, trying to keep the family and business afloat.  But Edward, Sutton, Gin, and Samuel T, and Mack each have POV’s, and like the first book all these players have a significant role in the story.

Lane and Lizzie presented a united front, and I loved them together! Lane took the lead in trying to salvage the Bradford Bourbon business and figure out where all the money went.  Lizzie steps up and helps organize the household and every day matters, while giving much needed support to Lane.  Whether William committed suicide or died in some other way becomes more of a problem as the story goes on and there are a few revelations that impact the family greatly!

I didn’t expect to enjoy this installment as much as I did because I was worried there was a love triangle brewing between Edward, Sutton and Shelby.  I also hate reading stories where one couple should be together (Edward and Sutton, IMO), and you’re pretty sure they will be together by the end, but then a large page count is devoted to the love interest being with someone else. In this case, I was worried there would be too much time spent with Edward and Shelby having hookups and whatnot. I won’t say what happens, but I shouldn’t have worried. That’s not saying that J.R. Ward isn’t putting her characters through some hard times, though. It’s hard to write this without spoiling anything, but I’m anxious for the next installment! How could you leave things like that, Ms. Ward?!! Ack! Please, don’t leave it like that!

Gin continues on with her plan to marry that wretched Richard Pford, seeing him as the only way to financial security.  I wasn’t especially fond of Gin in the first book, because she had so much given to her: money, education and definitely connections, yet she thought a marriage to a complete horror of a man as her only solution! She was such a snob, too! By the end I had some hope, though, that Gin is turning a corner, both personally and with her daughter.  As for Gin and Samuel T., who knows how that will turn out once everything comes out. They were definitely less hateful towards each other in this installment, but I think Samuel (Highlight for spoiler) will have a hard time forgiving Gin for not telling him the truth about Amelia (End of spoiler).

As a side note, if it’s been a while since you read the first book and have trouble remembering all characters and their roles fear not, because there is a “Dramatis Personae”, a who’s who in the beginning of the book to sort everyone out.  Very helpful!

J.R. Ward weaved a riveting, and addictive tale with The Angel’s Share, and now I’m dying to get my hands on the next book! Do I really have to wait a whole year?! I hope not!

Review & Giveaway: Falling in Deeper by Shayla Black

Publication Date: July 5th 2016 by Berkley
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

A tragic past threatens to destroy a passionate future in this dangerously sexy new novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Wicked for You.

After a violent tragedy nearly destroyed her, Lily Taylor ran away, changed her name, and started over. When her deadly nemesis resurfaces to eliminate his loose end, she turns to the last man she should trust—a stranger with a history of violence and an intoxicating sexuality she can’t refuse…

Though strong-armed into locating Lily to help put away a drug lord, ex-con Stone Sutter isn’t anyone’s snitch. When he finds the terrified beauty, he vows to keep her safe—but he isn’t sure he has the strength to shield her from his own desires.

As an unquenchable fire sparks between them, Lily’s tormentor stalks ever closer, and she must overcome her darkest fear to survive. Can she trust the bond she and Stone have formed as they’re falling in deeper?

My Thoughts:
As a teenager, Lily’s witnessed a brutal murder, and being in fear for her life she ran, changed her name, and started a new life. But Lily’s past is catching up to her. Stone is a computer hacker out of prison only if he can convince Lily to testify against Timothy Canton, a powerful man currently trying to run for governor of California.  The FBI has been trying to nail him for his crimes without success, but Lily could change all of that with her testimony.  Stone wants Lily to testify, at first because he doesn’t want to go back to prison, but as he gets to know Lily, it’s because he wants a future with her. He’s never felt that intense chemistry and pull with anyone else, and Lily felt it, too.

I adored Stone and his patience with Lily, and she deserved his tender care in light of what happened to her in the past.  With that said I was more than a little frustrated with Lily around the 80% mark.  She made a move that was so impulsive, and stupid I wanted to shake her! I knew what was coming when she went off all half-cocked, and it was mostly all her fault.  If I were Stone I would’ve wanted to beat the crap out of Axel for his part in it all!  I was nervously hoping for the best in the face of some sadistic minds!  Scary, scary people!

I would call Falling in Deeper BDSM lite, because Stone and Lily don’t strictly adhere to the D/s life style, I don’t think it would’ve worked for them, but that didn’t make this story any less erotic! I’m finding that Shayla Black is so very talented when it comes to building sexual tension! She writes so there is a constant sensual undercurrent, an anticipation of what might come, making me completely hot and bothered! And she completely delivered every time Lily and Stone came together!  This is the eleventh book in this series, but Falling in Deeper can be read as a standalone.  I didn’t read the previous books and still thoroughly enjoyed Lily and Stone’s story.

Release Day Launch Blitz Review & Giveaway: Once Upon a Moonlit Night by Elizabeth Hoyt

Publication Date: July 5th 2016 by Forever Yours
Purchase Links: Amazon | B & N | iBooks | Google | Kobo

About the book:

From New York Times bestselling author Elizabeth Hoyt comes a delightful Maiden Lane novella that begins once upon a moonlit night—and ends wickedly, wonderfully ever after...

Hippolyta Royle is running for her life. Pursued by hounds on a cold rainy night, the heiress flags down a passing carriage and throws herself at the mercy of the coach's occupant. Whoever this handsome traveler may be, he is her only hope to escape a terrible fate. But should he agree to escort her to safety, he's in for much more than he bargained for.

At first Matthew Mortimer doesn't believe Hippolyta's story, that she's a fabulously wealthy heiress who's been kidnapped. He assumes she's a beggar, an actress, or worse. But once his new travel companion washes the mud from her surprisingly lovely face, and they share a breathtaking kiss, there is no turning back.
My Thoughts:
I was eager to pick up Once Upon a Moonlit Night and find out what happed to Hippolyta Royale after escaping from the Duke of Montgomery’s clutches!  Hippolyta was purported to be the richest heiress in England and therefore a much sought after catch, but running through the muddy hills of England have made her a sodden mess.  She’s not out of danger, though, because the Duke’s men are still pursuing her.  When a carriage comes barreling by and she jumps at the chance for a ride back to London. The carriage owner is infuriating even if he is sexy as sin!

Matthew Mortimer is home after the last couple of years sailing the Indian Ocean to step into his role as Earl of Paxton. The title sounds grand, but so are the debts that accompany it.  When he comes upon Hippolyta soaked and covered in mud, he assumes she’s commoner trying to swindle him out of money, but allows her to ride with them to the next town anyhow. Her demeanor and spunk in spite of her situation intrigue Matthew and he can’t help feeling like he must protect this woman.

Little Hippolyta cleans up very well and soon Matthew can’t fight the desire and attraction brewing between them.

This was a fun, short and steamy romance! I loved the push and pull between Matthew and Hippolyta! Once Upon a Moonlit Night is novella done right: a fix of romance and HEA in a short amount of pages. This is a must for any Maiden Lane fan, but it’s not necessary to read any of the previous books to enjoy Hippolyta and Matthew’s story.

Review: The Bourbon Thief by Tiffany Reisz

Publication Date: June 28th 2016 by MIRA
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

From the internationally celebrated author of the Original Sinners series comes a brand-new tale of betrayal, revenge and a family scandal that bore a 150-year-old mystery

When Cooper McQueen wakes up from a night with a beautiful stranger, it's to discover he's been robbed. The only item stolen—a million-dollar bottle of bourbon. The thief, a mysterious woman named Paris, claims the bottle is rightfully hers. After all, the label itself says it's property of the Maddox family who owned and operated Red Thread Bourbon distillery since the last days of the Civil War until the company went out of business for reasons no one knows… No one except Paris.

In the small hours of a Louisville morning, Paris unspools the lurid tale of Tamara Maddox, heiress to the distillery that became an empire. But the family tree is rooted in tainted soil and has borne rotten fruit. Theirs is a legacy of wealth and power, but also of lies, secrets and sins of omission. The Maddoxes have bourbon in their blood—and blood in their bourbon. Why Paris wants the bottle of Red Thread remains a secret until the truth of her identity is at last revealed, and the century-old vengeance Tamara vowed against her family can finally be completed.

My Thoughts:
The Bourbon Thief was a power and riveting story with lies, murder, betrayal, and passion.

Paris spends the night with Cooper McQueen and attempts to steal the last known bottle of Red Thread Bourbon, a bottle worth a million dollars. Caught in the act, Paris has no choice but to tell him why, and she spends the night telling him a tale of the past: haunting, sad, sensual, and triumphant. A tale that had Cooper on the edge of his seat.  A tale that had me on the edge of my seat.

I think it’s best to go into The Bourbon Thief with as little information as possible, but I will say Ms. Reisz writing is beautiful, captivating and so very sensual! The romance was intense, desperate, and very HOT!  I’d like to know more of Paris’ future, of what may be, but even so I was satisfied with how the story ended.
