Cold as Hell (Haven's Rock #3) by Kelley Armstrong
My
Thoughts:
Cold as Hell is the third book in the Haven’s Rock
series that’s best read in order. Better yet, go back and start with the
original series: Rockton. Like Rockton was (or claimed to be) Haven’s Rock is a
place of refuge for those on the run. A community off the grid and under the
radar. A place for someone trying to escape a whole range of situations: a
stalker, abusive partner, or an unjust conviction. Applicants are vetted for
violence risk, meaning someone who poses a threat to others will not be
admitted.
In this installment, Eric and Casey are getting ready for
the birth of their baby, excited and nervous as the due date approaches when one
of their members is drugged and narrowly escapes abduction. They’re both
shocked and relieved, because it could’ve turned out so much worse, yet now
they know there’s a predator in their midst. Their vetting process is better
than Rockton’s, so they wonder how this could be. While investigating another
woman goes missing with deadlier results.
Cold as Hell is one you want to make some time for because
you’re not going to want to put it down! I love the methodical way Casey and
Eric go over each mystery, checking and re-checking the facts and witness
accounts. The devil is in the details! With this case the murderer is a special
kind of evil and I was so worried for everyone involved! The ending was a nail-biter,
and I stayed up late to finish! That last bit, how everything finally resolved
was gratifying! Maybe that makes me a bit ruthless, but that needed to be done!
I’ve alternately read and listened to the entire series (and
bought the hardcovers to keep on my shelf!) and I recommend either version. Thérèse
Plummer narrates the audios and they are fantastic! She seamlessly performs
both male and female characters and infuses them with just the right emotions
bringing the story to life!

Book Description:
New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong returns to Haven’s Rock in Cold as Hell as Casey Butler hunts down a dangerous killer during a deadly blizzard.
Haven’s Rock is a sanctuary town hidden deep in the Yukon for those who need to disappear from the regular world. Detective Casey Duncan and her husband, Sheriff Eric Dalton, are starting a family now that they’ve settled into their life here. As Casey nears the end of her pregnancy, she lets nothing, including her worried husband, stop her from investigating what happens in the forbidden forest outside the town of Haven’s Rock.
When one of the town's residents is drugged and wanders too close to the edge of town, she’s dragged into the woods kicking and screaming. She’s saved in the nick of time, but the women of the town are alarmed. Casey and Eric investigate the assault just as a snowstorm hits Haven’s Rock, covering the forest. It’s there they find a frozen body, naked in the snow. With mixed accounts of the woman's last movements, the two begin to question who they can trust—and who they can't—in their seemingly safe haven.

I so love this series and these characters! I've got a library hold on for this book and am very hopeful it will come in soon. And I'm very glad to hear that this is another good one from Kelley Armstrong! Great review, Rachel. :D
ReplyDeleteThank you, Lark! I hope you get your copy soon and I look forward to your thoughts! :)
DeleteI'm currently reading an e-ARC of Worth Fighting For and I'm 40% in and rolling my eyes. Not going to be a favorite.
ReplyDeleteThat's a bummer. :/ Hope it improves as you read!
DeleteI’m rereading hockey romances by Natasha Madison.

It's a comfort to reread favorites!
DeleteI didn't take your advice and jumped straight into Murder at Haven's Rock without reading the Rockton series first. I'm sure there are loads of spoilers about the characters, but I don't mind too much. It will be fun to go back and see how the characters got to where they are now. I'm about 20% through with Murder at Haven's Rock and should finish it within the next few days, so this giveaway is perfect. I also agree that the narrator is amazing! I'm happy to see you enjoyed this one as well.
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear you're enjoying it, Lindsi! I'd love to hear what you thought of the original series if you go back!
DeleteI love this series!

Ditto!
DeleteI am reading and enjoying The Crash by Freida McFadden.
ReplyDeleteI want to try that author!
DeleteI've only read this authors first couple of books but I think I should read some of the more recent books.
ReplyDeleteI love this series so much! I hope you pick it up, Mary!
DeleteWhat an interesting concept, a place to live off grid. Sounds like a great set up for this type of story.
ReplyDeleteI am not done with Rockton yet, but I have also bought Bear , but that one has to wait until I finishes
ReplyDeleteI loved this one. The crime and the villain had a super interesting twist.
ReplyDeleteI love this author, although I haven't read this type of book from her. I'm reading a YA book called Divining the Leaves which isn't bad so far. And also listening to You With a View and I'm really enjoying that! If I win, I'll probably give this to my mom and try to get her hooked on a new awesome author!
ReplyDeleteWonderful review, Rachel. This one had me biting my nails and reading "just one more chapter" way past the time I should have been in bed. Definitely the best one so far.
