Review & Giveaway: Owning Violet by Monica Murphy

Publication Date: December 2nd by Bantam
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy begins a sexy new contemporary romance series—perfect for fans of Christina Lauren and Emma Chase—that introduces three sisters born to wealth, raised to succeed, ready to love, destined to make waves.

I’ve moved through life doing what’s expected of me. I’m the middle daughter, the dutiful daughter. The one who braved a vicious attack and survived. The one who devoted herself to her family’s business empire. The one who met an ambitious man and fell in love. We were going to run Fleur Cosmetics together, Zachary and I.

Until he got a promotion and left me in the dust. Maybe it’s for the best, between his disloyalty and his wandering eye. But another man was waiting for me. Wanting me. He too has an overwhelming thirst for success, just like Zachary—perhaps even more so. He’s also ruthless. And mysterious. I know nothing about Ryder McKay beyond that he makes me feel things I’ve never felt before.

One stolen moment, a kiss, a touch . . . and I’m hooked. Ryder’s like a powerful drug, and I’m an addict who doesn’t want to be cured. He tells me his intentions aren’t pure, and I believe him. For once, I don’t care. I’m willing to risk everything just to be with him. Including my heart. My soul.

My everything.

My Thoughts:
Ryder sees Violet and wants.  He wants to steal her away from her cheating, dirtbag boyfriend, Zachery, who also happens to be his chief competition at Fleur Cosmetics. With Violet being one of the three heiresses’ to Fleur Cosmetics and an influential executive in her own right, she holds a lot of promise to someone like Ryder. Pilar his “friend” (if you can call a pit viper a friend), and sometimes lover wants to crush and devastate Violet so she can take her place in the company.  So they come up with a plan to achieve their goals.

Violet is the “good” daughter always doing what’s expected and never causing embarrassment. She’s worked hard to get where she is and she hopes to run Fleur Cosmetics with her boyfriend Zachary someday even though his faithfulness has come into question from time to time.  Yet, when Zachary’s latest dalliance pushes things too far, Violet finally has enough.  Waiting on the sidelines to swoop in is Ryder.  Violet thinks he’s a self-serving arrogant man, but Ryder is seductive and seems completely focused on Violet.  She can’t help resist his charms or the fiery attraction simmering between them.

Owning Violet was a romance reminiscent of Cruel Intentions with two people scheming to seduce, humiliate or scam another leaving them broken in the end.  However, I never felt Ryder came off as cruel and he never desired to humiliate Violet, although Pilar did. He did plan on using Violet to forward his own agenda and career.  But Ryder lusted after her even before he had designs to use her:

There’s just something about her shy, reserved personality that drives me out of my fucking mind. That makes me want to drive her out of her fucking mind.

All his bad intentions took a back seat after Violet let him in.  It seemed Ryder was more beguiled and bewitched by her than the other way around for a lot of the book.

I did like Violet, but at times I had a hard time respecting her.  She knew her boyfriend had cheated on her and she ignored it, even wanted to eventually marry him after knowing this!

Rumors swirl that there are other women. I'm not stupid. I have my suspicions. They might have even been confirmed once or twice. But when we're engaged, when we're married...
That will change. It has to.

Wake up and smell the coffee, Violet! Thankfully, that didn’t last long, but she still had bouts of poor judgment, IMO that made it hard for me to truly connect with her. Also, I wished for more of a cerebral connection between Ryder and Violet instead of a mostly physical one. Still, it was a very hot romance.

Monica Murphy excels at writing steamy, all-consuming romances, Violet and Ryder’s was no exception. They both were caught up by their intense attraction making for some sizzling scenes!  Pilar seems to be the villain in this series so I wonder how things will play out with her in the next book: Stealing Rose which focuses on Violet’s younger sister, Rose.

 EXCERPT:
I’m going to have a baby,” Ivy declares as she stops directly in front of me. Well, her belly stopped directly in front of me, the rest of her soon follows.
Yes, indeed, my wife is definitely going to have a baby. Soon.
I’m getting ready—staring at the mirror as I mess with my tie, making sure it’s perfect—when she approaches me. I shoot her a grin, feeling good, feeling on top of my game. Life couldn’t get any better, you know? We’re celebrating today and with good reason.
“I know, sexy mama.” I turn away from the mirror and wink at her. “Trust me, I haven’t forgotten that I’m the one who knocked you up.”
She stares at me, no reaction to my wink or my words. She usually slaps my ass and kisses me. Says something sarcastic at the very least. But I’m getting nothing. And it’s kind of disconcerting. “Archer. I’m dead serious. I’m going to have the baby.”
“I know, babe. And I can’t freaking wait.” I study her, noticing that she looks a little pale and her pupils are dilated. Hmm. “You feeling okay?”
Rolling her eyes, she rests her hand on top of her protruding stomach, rubbing it absently. Then not so absently. As in, she’s clutching her belly like she’s in pain. “I’m in—” She sucks in a harsh breath, holding it for a few seconds. “—labor, damn it.”

Blog Tour Review & Giveaway: Four Years Later by Monica Murphy

I'm a huge fan of Monica Murphy so I'm excited to be part of the blog tour for Four Years Later the 4th book in the One Week Girlfriend series which I absolutely love! Four Years Later was amazing!  This tour is hosted by Inkslinger PR and you can see a complete tour schedule at the bottom of this post.  As part of my stop I have my review and a wonderful giveaway so be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the post to enter for a chance to win.

Publication Date: March 4th 2014
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

New Adult bestselling author Monica Murphy winds up her sensational series with this sexy story of two college kids with nothing in common but a bunch of baggage and a burning attraction.

Over. That about sums up everything in my life. Suspended from my college football team and forced to cut back my hours at The District bar because of my crappy grades, I can’t keep turning to my sister, Fable, and her pro-football playing husband, Drew, to bail me out. I just can’t seem to find my own way. Weed and sex are irresistible temptations—and it’s messed up that I secretly hand over money to our junkie mom. A tutor is the last thing I want right now—until I get a look at her.

Chelsea is not my type at all. She’s smart and totally shy. I’m pretty sure she’s even a virgin. But when she gives me the once over with those piercing blue eyes, I’m really over. But in a different way. I won’t deny her ass is killer, but it’s her brain and the way she seems to crave love—like no one’s ever given her any—that make me want her more than any girl I’ve ever met. But what would someone as seemingly together as her ever see in a screwed up guy like me?

My Thoughts:
I love the One Week Girlfriend series with Drew and Fable as the main characters, but my heart went out to Owen, Fable’s younger brother who was so young when their mother abandoned them. He was sweet and oh-so-protective to Fable.  With Four Years Later we get Owen and Chelsea’s story which was emotional, and gratifying.

Owen and Chelsea are thrown together when she’s assigned to tutor him.  Owen has let his grades slide and he’s in danger of being kicked off the football team if he doesn’t catch up and get his act together.  Chelsea and Owen are quite the opposites on the outside: Owen is the popular, carefree football star, and Chelsea is the naïve, brainy overachiever.  And yet, these two have an intense draw to each other.  Oh, I do love it when the nerdy, smart girl gets the hunk-a-licious guy! And Owen and Chelsea have far more in common than they realize.

Owen has his junkie mother who drops by when she needs money for drugs, always taking his self-esteem down several notches with each visit. She is an absolute horror of a mother, and I wanted to shake Owen for allowing her in his life. Yet, at the same time, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for Owen giving in because his inherent need to gain approval, and love from her.

Chelsea has a mother who alternately hates or loves her husband, Chelsea’s father; a man who has always put his own needs and desires before his wife and daughter’s. Her parent’s roller-coaster marriage and her father’s incarceration have left a mark on Chelsea.

This romance was full of tension and longing!  Owen was such a goner for Chelsea he didn’t want to muck things up.  He was determined to do things right and be patient with Chelsea being so inexperienced and innocent.  I loved how Owen drew her out of her shell and made her crazy with desire. This made for some lusty and intense scenes!  I was thrilled that Chelsea made Owen want to clean up his life and get rid of any bad influences. They really brought out the best in each other.

Fans of Drew and Fable will not be disappointed as they make appearances with oh-so-cute baby Autumn! Their HEA continues to fill my heart with joy.

Monica Murphy has another win with Four Years Later.  Owen and Chelsea’s story was touching and passionate, and is sure to make you sigh in contentment by the end.

Blog Tour Review, Interview & Giveaway: Savor by Monica Murphy

I'm excited to be part of the Blog Tour for Savor by Monica Murphy because I'm a huge fan of her writing ever since reading her Drew + Fable series. This tour is hosted by InkSlinger PR. Thanks for including us! For our stop I have my review, and an extra special treat, an interview with Monica Murphy! Last but not least, we have a wonderful giveaway: A Signed Set of the Billionaire Bachelors Club series!

Publication Date: January 21st 2014 by Avon Impulse
About the book:
New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy concludes her sexy Billionaire Bachelors Club series with a fiery romance that refuses to be left at the office…

Bryn James can’t take much more. Smart, sexy Matthew DeLuca is everything she wants in a man, but he’s also her boss—the youngest, hottest vineyard owner in the Napa Valley—and he doesn’t see her as anything more than his shy assistant. That’s all about to change. Armed with a hot new look and an attitude to match, Bryn is determined to catch Matt’s eye… professionalism be damned.

With his winery’s grand reopening approaching, Matt is trying to stay focused, but Bryn is suddenly making it very difficult. He’s always thought her prim demeanor effortlessly sexy, but Matt can’t deny that her transformation is jaw-dropping …and going to make it very difficult to keep his hands to himself.

But when one thing leads to another and suddenly Matt is stripping Bryn bare, he’ll be faced with the biggest risk of his career—and his heart. Can he convince her—and himself—that this might just be more than a no-strings office affair?

My Thoughts:
Monica Murphy is one of my favorite romance writers, and Savor did not disappoint.  Matt and Bryn are not looking for love, but aren’t those always the ones who fall the hardest?

Matt DeLuca is an ex-pro baseball player turned winery owner.  He bought up a failing winery, employees and all, closed it down to revamp it and bring it back to life.  Matt’s worked hard to turn it into a success and he’s just about to open it back up to the public, and hopefully make it a success.  Bryn James, his assistant, came with the winery and has been by his side every step of the way.  Her efficiency and hard work have been invaluable to Matt, and so giving into his growing attraction to her could be disastrous.  She is his employee and subordinate after all, and if things went wrong he could lose his best asset. The funny thing about this whole situation is that Bryn is completely not his type!  She wears dowdy, ill fitting suits, no makeup, and sensible shoes.  Yet, this woman seems to be driving him wild!

There’s something going on under those bland, downright unflattering clothes too. I can tell. I’m not an idiot. She’s hiding breasts and an ass that are probably pretty damn amazing.

Matt’s stunned when Bryn rethinks her look.  He thought she was irresistible before, now he’s a goner for sure!

Having a crush on the boss is a really bad idea for Bryn.  She needs this job to stay in Napa and away from her hometown in Texas, but working so close with Matt has made falling for him inevitable. It’s not even that he’s so completely gorgeous, maybe Bryn could resist that, but he’s the whole package: smart, fair and passionate about everything he does. Still, the situation could get very sticky, but she’s having a hard time telling herself no.

Both Matt and Bryn were highly likable characters, and I was rooting for them to get together from page one.  Seeing these two fight their feelings and slowly lose the battle was enjoyable.  I love the idea of not being attracted to someone initially, and then falling hard when you get to know them. It’s usually a much more intense connection, and Matt and Bryn had some fiery scenes to prove it! Monica Murphy never lets you down in the spice department!

Savor was a sweet and spicy romance that ticked all the boxes for me.  I can’t wait to see what Monica Murphy comes up with next!

Author Interview:

Now for the extra special treat, Monica Murphy has agreed to answer my most pressing questions about the series and writing!

Q: What spurred the idea of writing about three Billionaire Bachelors falling in love?

Truthfully? Avon Impulse put out a call for a series featuring billionaires. I put something together, sent it to my editor, they asked for a few tweaks and then…they said yes. I mean come on, who can resist a sexy billionaire bachelor? J

Q: Can you tell us which story was easiest or hardest to write and the one you most relate to?

The hardest one to write was TORN only because I was smack in the middle of a bunch of deadlines all at once and I felt like I was drowning a little bit. The one I can most relate to would have to be SAVOR only because I really love Bryn. Not that I’m a beauty keeping myself under wraps but I really enjoyed writing her because she felt very real to me.

Q: Which character do you relate to the most, and which one gave you the most trouble writing?

Well, I sorta answered this question already above but it is definitely Bryn. She’s the most “real” woman of the three, I think. Though I do love Ivy and Marina for all of their feistiness…

Q: Bryn is described as looking like Angelina Jolie, if she wore dowdy suits and no make-up, that is.  If you had to cast Matthew, who would fit the bill?

Such a hard question! I don’t know. He’s tall and broad and dark and muscular and hot…any dude who looks like that would fit the bill.

Q: Is Savor the last in this series?

Yes, I’m sad to say that it is. I will miss my BBC boys. *sniff*

Q: How does writing a novella compare to writing a full length story?

I love writing both. With a novella, sometimes it’s trickier because you have to condense all the action into a shorter format. So you have to write tight and stay focused. That can be a challenge. With a novel, you can explore things more…I like bouncing back and forth writing both. Keeps me from getting bored.

Q: What influenced you to start writing and publishing novels?

I found a bunch of romance novels in a bag in the hall closet when I was a teen. They were my mom’s. I started reading them (most historicals) and I fell in love. I’d always been a big reader and I realized that I wanted to be a writer someday.

Q: What kind of books do you enjoy reading and what is the last book you read?

I like mostly romance. I rarely read anything else anymore. I like historical, contemporary, YA, romantic suspense, NA…I love it all!

Q: How do you spend your time when you’re not writing?

I spend my time with my family. My kids keep us going. I also try and read as much as I can.

Q: What are you working on now?

I’m working on something I…can’t talk about right now. But I hope to have more information to announce soon!!

Thank you for having me today!

Thank you, Monica, for stopping by Waves of Fiction! I look forward to your next lovely story!

EXCERPT:

“Tell me your name.”
A shiver runs down my spine at the commanding, deep voice that sounds in my ear. I keep myself still, trying my best not to react considering we’re surrounded by at least a hundred people, but oh, how I want to.
If I could, I’d throw myself into the arms of the man who’s standing far too close to me.  He’s demanding to know my name as if I owe him some sort of favor, which I can’t help but find hot.
Irritating, but hot.
“Tell me yours first,” I murmur in return, turning my head in the opposite direction, so it appears I’m not even talking to him. He stands behind me, tall and broad, imposing in his immaculate black suit and crisp white shirt—the silvery tie he wears perfectly knotted at his throat.
I might not be looking at this very moment, but I’d memorized everything about him the moment I first saw him not an hour ago. He’d drawn plenty of attention without saying a word, striding into the room as if he owned it, casting that calculating gaze upon everyone in attendance. Looking very much like the mighty king observing his lowly subjects—until his eyes lit upon me.
He watched me for long, agonizing minutes. Butterflies fluttered in my stomach as I felt his hungry eyes rake over my body, and for a terrifying moment I wondered if he could see right through me. I shifted the slightest bit, inwardly cursing myself for coming tonight, but I held firm. I refused to react.
I still refuse to react.
“You don’t know who I am?” He sounds amused at the notion, and I’m tempted to walk away without a word. My earlier nerves evaporate, replaced by a steely spine and an even steelier attitude. He’s so confident, so arrogant, I’m sure he believes he has me.
He doesn’t know who he’s dealing with then, does he?
We’re at a local wine- and brewery-tasting, and I’m here representing the bakery my family owns. The one I was recently allowed to take over and run since I’d graduated college. The business they all believe is going to fail. So why not give it to Marina? She can’t screw it up too badly.
That’s what I overheard my father telling my uncle. The memory of his words still cuts straight to the bone.
Finally I chance a glance at the man behind me, drinking in his thick brown hair tinged with gold, the way it tumbles across his forehead, his twinkling green eyes, the faint smile that curves his full lips. The combination gives him a boyish appearance. It’s a complete illusion because there is nothing boyish about this virile man before me.
“Perhaps you can enlighten me.” I offer a carefree smile and turn to face him, the nerves returning tenfold when he takes a step toward me, invading my personal space. His scent hits me first: clean and subtle, a mixture of soap and just . . . him. No cologne that I can detect.
Rather unusual. Most of the men I know slather themselves in expensive scents all with the purpose of drawing us silly women in. Instead, they end up choking us.
With the exception of this man. I find the uniqueness refreshing.
A slow smile appears, revealing perfectly straight white teeth. “Gage Emerson.” He thrusts his hand toward me. “And you are . . .?”
He’s not very subtle. And he’s exactly who I suspected, not that I had any real doubt. The very man who recently bought up what feels like half of the Napa Valley, all in the hopes of turning it around and selling it to God knows who just to earn a hefty profit.
Not caring in the least that he’s forever changing the landscape of the very place I’ve grown up in. And devastating my family in the process.
“Marina Knight,” I say. God, I sound breathless, and I want to smack myself. I’m not here tonight because of him. I came for other reasons. To promote the family bakery, to mix and mingle with local business owners, many I consider friends. My life in the Napa Valley is all I know.
And this gorgeous man standing in front of me is trying to take what I know away from me for good.

About the Book:

New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy mixes business with pleasure in the second book of her sexy Billionaire Bachelors Club series …

Marina Knight came to this party for one thing only: to slap Gage Emerson in the face. Poised to snatch up her family's real estate empire, the sexy tycoon is on the verge of making an enemy for life—even if he can make her melt with a single kiss …

When Gage discovers that the alluring woman before him is the key to his latest acquisition, claiming her as his suddenly doesn't seem quite so cut-and-dried. To get what he wants, he must get to know the fierce woman willing to face him down—as she steadily steals his heart.

Gage's persistence and intense passion war with Marina's determination to protect her family. As they delve deeper into an affair they didn't see coming, Marina's torn: Will she lose her heart to Gage—or everything she holds dear?

My Thoughts:
I’m a big fan of Monica Murphy’s Drew+Fable series so I was really excited to pick up Torn.

Marina Knight is the daughter to two of the wealthiest families in Napa Valley.  Unfortunately the market downturn hit her family hard and the temptation to sell off long held property is high.  Part of the most coveted property is in downtown St. Helena where she runs Autumn Harvest, a boutique bakery.  The bakery is Marina’s life and focus, and she pours her heart and soul into it.

Gage Emerson is a very wealthy bachelor on a streak of making highly profitable real estate deals.  He’s got his eye on some properties in Napa, long held by the Molina family who is property rich but cash poor at the moment.  Gage threatens to take Marina’s life and livelihood away by scooping up the family’s bakery and selling it off.  This makes him enemy number one in her mind.  Too bad their bodies didn’t get the memo.

“Don’t you feel it, Marina? Feel the chemistry between us, brewing and popping? Don’t you want to do something about it?”

Oh, how I love a good old antagonistic romance!  Gage and Marina push each other’s buttons and tick each other off, so the sparks fly! And soon, so does their clothes.  This one was lots of fun with white hot scenes sure to make you squirm and fidget. I swear, these two couldn’t keep their hands off of each other!  I did really enjoy the passion between Marina and Gage but I did feel this relationship lacked development that would’ve given me a deeper connection to their romance. Still, it was a fast and thrilling read.

Monica Murphy has a talent of writing a romance that warms your heart on one page and incinerates you panties on the next.  I’m going back to read the first installment in this series, Crave, next.

Review: One Week Girlfriend (Drew+Fable #1) by Monica Murphy

One Week Girlfriend (Drew + Fable, #1)

Publication Date: January 10th 2013
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble
About the Book: Temporary. That one single word best describes my life these last few years. I’m working at a temporary job until I can finally break free. I’m my little brother’s temporary mother since our mom doesn’t give a crap about either of us. And I’m that temporary girl all the guys want to get with because I give it up so easily. According to the rumors, at least.

But now I’m the temporary girlfriend of Drew Callahan, college football legend and all around golden guy. He’s beautiful, sweet—and he’s hiding way more secrets than I am. He’s brought me into this fake life where everyone seems to hate me. And everyone seems to want something from him. The only thing he seems to want though is…

Me.

I don’t know what to believe anymore. All I know is, I think Drew needs me. And I want to be there for him.

My Thoughts:
One Week Girlfriend knocked me off my feet! I totally fell in love with this emotional and heart-wrenching story!

Drew pays Fable to be his fake girlfriend for the week of Thanksgiving, a week he must spend at home. He needs Fable for protection but as a reader you don’t know why. Fable agrees because she can barely make ends meet working as a barmaid. She needs the money. She has a poor excuse of a mother, and a teenage brother to take care of. She knows Drew made this proposition because she has a reputation of being easy, a reputation she doesn’t fight, but it’s not deserved, and it cuts her that this is the reason he’s picked her. She’s seen Drew at the bar before with his college mates and knows his type, entitled and used to getting what he wants, girls being no exception. Or so she thinks.

Turns out Drew and Fable both have preconceived ideas about each other that are very wrong. Spending the week together they slowly realize this and begin to lean on each other, confide in one another, and connect emotionally:

Drew reaches out and grabs hold of my hand again and when I look up at him, he smiles at me in the darkness. I have this sudden sense that it’s the two of us against the world.

Mental and emotional connections are always so much more powerful than physical ones, IMO, but with Drew and Fable they have it all:

We’re only two days into this fake relationship crap and this is where we’re at, wrapped around each other like pretzels and hoping like hell we don’t have to let go of each other any time soon.—Drew

One thing they don’t have going for them is the demons that Drew has to fight. Trust me when I say they are ugly and fill me with murderous thoughts!! It won’t take you long to put two and two together to figure out what happened, but it will stun you and make you sick for poor Drew! Fable realizes that something really awful has happened to him to damage him so, and she’s determined to stick by his side and help him through.

Monica Murphy managed to write a story made me swoon, ache and enrage me at the same time!! It’s one of those reads you don’t want to put down! And, oh, that ending! It’s not a cliff but it’s definitely NOT where I want things to end. I’m writing this itching to click over to purchase and load Second Chance Boyfriend so I can get my Drew and Fable HEA! *runs off to buy*
