Review: Melting the Ice by Jaci Burton

Melting the Ice (Play by Play, #7)

Publication Date: February 4th 2014 by Berkley Publishing Group
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

Everything’s coming together for budding fashion designer Carolina Preston. Only months away from having her own line, she could use some publicity. That’s when her brother suggests his best friend as a model—hockey player Drew Hogan.

Carolina and Drew already have a history—a hot one, back in college. Unforgettable for Carolina, but for Drew, just another slap shot. This time, though, it’s different. His perfect body would be for professional use only. This time, she could use him.

Drew is all for it. He’s looking forward to the exposure. Plus, it would give him a chance to prove to Carolina that he’s changed. If only he could thaw her emotions, convince her to let down her guard and let him in just one more time…

My Thoughts:
Drew and Carolina had a one night stand in college and it’s something they both look on with regret. Drew because he acted like an ass to Carolina and Carolina because she allowed herself to fall for Drew who didn’t return the same intense feelings she had.

Fast forward to present, eight years later, Carolina is about to launch her own fashion line and needs male models. Her brother Gray agrees and being a race car driver he’s sure to attract attention, but he suggests Drew his best friend and unknown to him, Carolina’s one-night stand gone bad.  But Drew has the potential to bring a lot of attention to her line, because he’s a famous hockey player so Carolina decides to put aside her feelings and bring him on.  Carolina resolves to keep things professional and forget hurt she has, but Drew would love a chance to show her he’s not a jerk.  He’s never forgotten Carolina or their intense night, even if they got together when he was too immature to appreciate her.

At first Carolina is hesitant about letting Drew back into her life, but soon the intense desire she once had for him comes back with a vengeance and Drew is definitely persistent. Yet, they’re both at a time in their lives where their careers take priority and a huge chunk of their time so something serious doesn’t enter their minds. I like the fact that they each understood the high demands of their jobs, and didn’t fault the other for being so busy, they both got it.  But because their attachment grows they carve more and more time out for each other, and their feelings are definitely moving into the serious category.

I love a second chance romance, but I do feel this story was lacking the intense longing feelings that I get when reading about a love opportunity missed or one gone wrong. I think if I would’ve got a little more of their history I might have felt differently.  Their history was touched on a little in the One Sweet Ride so maybe this is where I missed out by not reading the previous story. Apparently it centered on Gray, Carolina’s brother, and the fact that Drew and Carolina had an awkward meet up in that book was talked about here.

Still, their romance was satisfying and oh, boy was it ever HOT! Wow, I’ve read a couple of Jaci Burton’s books (the Hope series) and this was the hottest one yet! Drew had no problem whatsoever vocalizing what he wanted in the bedroom and what he was going to do, and I thought my panties would melt right off a few times!

Carolina and Drew manage to get over a few bumps and this story leaves them in a good place together.  I have a feeling they’ll show up in the next book and we’ll get to see more of a HEA for them as secondary characters.  I didn’t read One Sweet Ride, Gray and Evelyn’s story, but they are featured quite a lot here and there were a couple of momentous events for them that brought a smile to my face even if I didn't read their story.

Jaci Burton wrote a romance that will warm your heart and curl your toes! I plan on reading the next in the series: Trevor and Haven’s story in Straddling the Line which is set to come out in July.

Blog Tour & Giveaway: 8 Weeks by Bethany Lopez

8 Weeks (Time for Love 31) by Bethany Lopez
Release Date: March 24, 2014
Purchase Links: Amazon | iTunes | Smashwords | Barnes & Noble
Is eight weeks enough time to earn back the love of someone you've betrayed...the only one you've ever loved?

Shelly has been in love with Cal since they started dating in eleventh grade. Despite everyone saying that the odds were against them, they got married after graduation and built a life together. Now, six years later, she is faced with the ultimate betrayal. Devastated, her first instinct is to call it quits…

After a drunken binge at his best friends’ bachelor party, Cal betrays the one person who has always been there for him, his wife, Shelly. Terrified and realizing she might divorce him, Cal must come up with a way to prove to her that his love is true…

Cal asks Shelly for eight weeks. Eight weeks to convince her that their marriage is worth the fight. Will Shelly be able to trust him again, or will their marriage end the way many others do when faced with opposition… In divorce?

8 Weeks is book 1 in the Time for Love series, but can be read as a stand alone.

My Thoughts
Shelly and Cal have been married for six years when Cal suddenly finds himself in a position that can ruin his marriage. During a quick guy’s trip to Las Vegas for his best friend’s bachelor party, he wakes up in bed with a woman he’s never met. When he comes home and admits his mistake to his wife, she immediately leaves him and intends to file for divorce. However, Cal convinces Shelly to give him eight weeks (one week for each of the years they’ve known each other) to prove she could come to trust him again and make their marriage work.

First off, my biggest concern in this story was, why didn’t anyone care what happened to Cal in Vegas? He was slap ass drunk and shoved in a cab on his way to his hotel room with the intention of sleeping off his drunken stupor when all of a sudden, he’s in bed with a woman and he has no recollection of what happened that night? Am I naïve by worrying about foul play? If that happened to my husband, I would be freaked out… after I made him take a STD test of course! That whole situation just felt strange, and I can’t believe how it was completely ignored!

If Shelly and Cal were so tight and completely in love with each other, I guess I don’t understand why she didn’t give him the chance to fully explain what happened that weekend. I wish Shelly would have taken more of an opportunity to listen and communicate with Cal during this entire ordeal. They both needed a serious discussion… clearly. Also, I don’t think it was fair of Shelly to lead Cal on during two of their dates by seducing him. For some reason it felt punitive and I wish Cal would have called her on it more than he did.

Cal was absolute perfection! Grant it, he made a terrible mistake. I get it. But, he can’t recall any of the events that night and that was sort of scary. I would have hoped one of his friends, or many his wife would have cared a bit more to explore what happened. It was clear how torn up he was about it and it was quite sad because all he was trying to do was get back to his room and recover a bit. Also, I feel he deserved better from Shelly. There were parts in the story where I wanted him to just walk away and call it quits. He tried so hard to win her back and it felt like the effort to repairing the marriage went only one way. When it came out how much he was vested in his marriage and all the little things he’d do for Shelly to make her life easier, it really pulled at my heart. At the core, Cal was a sweetheart that deserved so much more.

I really enjoyed how the secondary characters added depth to the story. There were all crafted perfectly and I might just enjoy reading their stories. The only secondary character that I feel could have been axed was Melody. She kept popping up for no necessary reason and I felt her space was wasted.

Overall, I can’t deny I enjoyed 8 Weeks, I read it in one sitting, but for some reason I feel there was an opportunity for better character development in some areas and plot substance in others.

Review: Just One Night by Lauren Layne

Just One Night (Sex, Love & Stiletto, #3)

Publication Date: March 11th 2014 by Loveswept
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

About the book:

In Lauren Layne’s sizzling Sex, Love & Stiletto series, New York’s hottest “sexpert” has been living a lie—and it’s up to one man to keep her honest…all night long.

Riley McKenna knows sex—good sex, bad sex, kinky sex…Her articles in Stiletto magazine are consistently the publication’s most scandalous—and the most read. But Riley has a secret…all that sexy talk? Not an ounce of it comes from personal experience. Her own bedroom escapades are more limited than even her best friends know. When her editor requests that all columnists write something more personal for Stiletto’s anniversary issue, Riley turns to the one man she’s always been able to count on and calls in the favor of a lifetime.

Sam Compton would do anything for Riley McKenna. Anything except be her experimental sex toy. He refuses her request. At least until she tells him that it’ll either be him or she’ll go to someone else. And that, Sam can’t accept. Reluctantly he agrees to her terms—one night of completely meaningless sex in the name of research. Riley thinks she’s prepared for what awaits her in Sam’s bed. After ten years of writing about sex, actually doing it shouldn’t be that different, right? So wrong. What starts as “one time only” becomes “just one more time.” And then one more. And before they know it, Riley and Sam learn first-hand that when it comes to love, there’s no such thing as just one night.

My Thoughts:
Lauren Layne is one of my favorite contemporary romance writers, not because what she’s writing is so original, let’s face it, it’s hard to be original in this category, but because she writes romance with a flair that sets her stories above the rest.  After the Kiss is my favorite of the Sex, Love & Stiletto series but Just One Night is a close second.  One big reason for that is because Riley and Sam have a history.  Years of longing from afar lent a gut wrenching quality to their situation that made it oh-so-much sweeter when these two finally figured things out!

Riley McKenna is the “sex expert” of Stiletto Magazine but no one knows that she has little experience in that department; a secret that she keeps closely guarded.  With a new assignment to write about an actual personal account, Riley has nothing to go on, but she has one man in mind to change that: Sam.  The man she’s always wanted but has never managed to snag.

Little does she know that Sam yearns for her, too, but he feels Riley is off limits.  He doesn’t feel good enough for her, his mother has made that abundantly clear for years.  But Sam can’t help himself when Riley makes an offer he can’t refuse; it’s just one night after all. Famous last words!

We’ve met both Riley and Sam in the previous novels and I they had back and forth drama that made it obvious they both had it bad for each other so I was excited to read their story.  Sam has been best friends with Riley’s brother for years.  He’s sort of a surrogate member of her family, but Riley’s feelings for him are anything but familial. She’s had a huge crush on him and has had to bear the hurt of watching him carrying on with other women through the years.  Ouch! They always seem to skate the line between flirting and friendship and Riley longs for more:

She did this to herself every damn time, holding on to hope that she and Sam would actually cross that line between bickering and flirting, curiosity and jealousy. Between friends and lovers. But it had been a decade. Sam had had a freaking decade to stake his claim. He hadn’t. He wouldn’t.

Poor Riley. Poor Sam. Fortunately for Riley she has her girls Julie, Grace and Emma at her back, the other writers for Stiletto magazine and her closest friends. With their help she manages to make a one night stand play out into much more.  Sam never knew what hit him, but he needed some major plotting to wake him up, and I loved the strategy!

Just One Night had fiery hot scenes, but as with the other books, they were done with class. Riley and Sam’s journey had rocks and bumps, but there were doses of clever humor to keep it lighthearted and fun. But best of all we get the satisfaction of seeing two people finally get what they’ve desperately wanted for years: each other!  *sigh*

I hope this isn’t the end to the Sex, Love & Stiletto series because Emma HAS to have her story!  Until then I’ll be over here tapping my foot patiently and waiting, Lauren Layne!

Book Excerpt
He kissed that delicate pulse just beneath my ear, letting his breath caress my earlobe. “Look at us in the mirror,” he whispered.
I lifted my gaze, staring at the floor-to-ceiling mirrored closet doors in front of us.
Liam was watching me closely, a genuine warmth in his eyes.
Brushing my long hair aside, he kissed the base of my neck. “Don’t look at me, Viv. Look at us.”
In the mirror, I took in the sight of the two of us, deliciously naked on the plush ottoman bench with Liam’s arms wrapped around my waist as I sat on his lap in a reverse cowgirl position.
Our reflected gaze was mesmerizing. Tantalizing. I loved the way we looked together. Loved the contrast of our skin … his tanned torso dark against the honey-colored complexion of my skin. The soft swells of my breasts, the lush curve of my hips set against the hard angles and planes of his tremendous male body.
Meanwhile, Liam’s hands were caressing my breasts, lifting and pushing them together.
A soft sigh escaped me as he covered my nipples with his thumbs and began making a series of lazy circles.
“You’re so beautiful.” His voice was thick and raspy as he thumbed my nipples, pinching the buds until I cried out.
My eyes fluttered shut and I let my head roll forward, lost in the swirling sensations as he continued teasing my breasts.
“Look in the mirror, Viv.” His tongue flicked against my ear. “I want you to get a good clear view of how sexy you look when I make love to you.” He skimmed his palms down and over my hips, pulling me firmly against his swelling erection. “I want you to see how fuckin’ hot you look when you come for me.”
At his urging, I lifted my gaze, staring again at our reflection.
With one hand, Liam reached between my legs, spreading my thighs and parting my sex.
Feathers of air touched me intimately.
I was open to Liam’s dark and intense gaze.
Open to my gaze.
I had to force myself not to shy away from the reflection staring back at me.
My labia, flared wide open, flushed a deep pink and dotted with moisture.
I looked so utterly and completely exposed. And so lewd.
Instinctively, I tried to bring my legs together but Liam gripped my knees, keeping my thighs splayed wide open, exposing my throbbing clit.
Sparks of heat flashed in Liam’s eyes as he stared at my glistening sex.
I’d never felt more defenseless and more aroused. “Liam, I—”
“Shhh,” he soothed. “Keep watching, Viv.” Using his fingertips, he spread the creamy droplets of my arousal around my labia.
Entranced, I watched. Watched his strong fingers rubbing the moisture deep into my pink folds, his thumb pressing hard against my extruded clit, teasing and taunting the swollen bud.
My body trembled, and my flesh quivered as he continued stroking, wringing every last ounce of pleasure from my body.
A strangled sob caught in my throat, and in the mirror I saw thick rivulets of juice seeping out of my sex.
“So wet.” His fingers cleaved the slick folds of my labia and I moaned as he sank two fingers deep into my core. “So juicy.” My moans melted into breathy whimpers as he slowly withdrew his fingers.
With a sure, fluid grace of movement, he lifted me up and set me back down on the ottoman.
I licked my lips in obvious anticipation, watching him pull a foil packet out of the nightstand drawer.

Book Excerpt
The massive late afternoon line of customers suffering from caffeine withdrawal finally ended.
“Is there a government imposed ration on coffee that I don’t know about?” I asked my co-worker as I untied the apron that was splattered with coffee and frosting. We always got a late afternoon rush at Java the Hut, the coffee shop where I worked full time, but today’s had been bordering on ridiculous. It was twenty minutes past the end of my shift. It was a good thing I hadn’t had plans, cause no way could I have left Meg alone with the thirsting hordes.
“Whatcha up to tonight, pretty girl?” Meg smiled at me as she set the machines to brewing—our dispensers all needed to be refilled after the rush.
“Roller derby practice.” I finger combed my hair before tying it back with an elastic that I kept in the pocket of my apron. I knew from experience that it wasn’t much of an improvement, looks wise, but at least it was off my face.
“Wanna grab dinner after?” Meg’s voice was casual, with a hint of flirtation. I studied her for a long moment as I zipped my hoodie all the way up to my chin.
Tall and pleasantly plump, my fellow barista looked like the former southern beauty queen that she was, all big hair and boobs and shiny teeth. On her first day at the shop she’d announced out of nowhere that she was a lesbian and too bad if I had a problem with that.
I had blinked in surprise, but only because of the way she’d just thrown the info out there. I could have cared less if she dated men, women, or dogs, and when I’d told her as much she’d laughed that deep throaty laugh of hers and patted me on the ass in a way that didn’t offend me at all.
“We’re gonna get along just fine, sugar.” She’d said, and we did, even though she never stopped asking me out.
Apart from a few dinners, I mostly refused. Hell, maybe I’d take her up on it one day, but as of right now I didn’t date anyone, not women, and certainly not men.
I wasn’t sure that I ever would again.
“You don’t want to go for dinner with me after practice. I’ll be sweaty and stinky and ready for bed.” I realized that I’d set myself up as soon as the words left my mouth, and was already laughing by the time Meg wiggled her eyebrows at me lasciviously.
“The ready for bed part sounds real good, sweetie pie.” She blew a kiss at me as I laughingly swatted her away, tossing my apron into the laundry bin and swinging my purse up and onto my shoulder.
“See you tomorrow, Meg.” I grinned at her as I pushed my way out of the steamy, cinnamon scented interior of Java the Hut and into the uncharacteristically crisp air of early fall. I snuggled down deeper into my hoodie as I began to walk in the direction of my condo, wishing I’d had the forethought to bring my woolly mittens with me that morning.
The chilly air burned the inside of my nose as I walked, my thoughts back on the crazy busy shift I’d just left. I was a self-admitted loner and so wasn’t sure where the urge came from, but I thought about turning back to the shop and taking Meg up on her invite, though just as friends.
It was probably time to start getting out, start trying to get some semblance of a normal life back. The problem was that I so rarely had the urge. The coffee shop, roller derby, my condo—they were all safe.
It took a lot for me to venture outside of my comfort zone these days.
“Just do it, Adele. One dinner. You’ve done it before.” My steps slowed as I turned back around—my mind wanted company, but my body wasn’t so sure. Out of habit I looked across the street, at the apartment building I’d lived in a few years earlier. The one I’d fled from when my life had turned upside down.
A young man stood on the frosted grass in front of the ancient brick, breaking down cardboard boxes, only a T-shirt standing between him and the chill.
Something about that body… about the tilt of his head was achingly familiar.
I did a double take.
“What the fuck?” Meg forgotten, my feet froze in place and I stared, my heart going from zero to sixty in the time it took to suck in a strangled mouthful of air.
He was a fraction taller than he’d been last time I’d seen him, and the long, lean muscles I’d once known were thicker, looked harder. His dark hair was a bit longer, like he just didn’t have the time or inclination to keep it short and neat.
And it was a different pair of glasses perched on his nose, some classic wire rims instead of the preppy RayBans he’d once sported.
But my body remembered, and unfortunately, so did my heart.
It was Malachi Hunter. Malachi Hunter, the only guy who’d ever broken my heart.
“Holy shit.” An embarrassing squeaking sound echoed out of my mouth, cutting through the thin, cold air, and then I felt those eyes that I’d once loved to just look into lock onto me.
I couldn’t move. I couldn’t breathe.
His head cocked to the side, his eyes narrowing like he was trying to place me. A pang of hurt twined with irritation bolted through my gut, followed by the more rational reasoning of my mind.
It had been over two years since I’d laid eyes on him. He looked different, and I knew that I did, too.
My hair was no longer the neon red I’d once kept it—I’d let it go back to its natural reddish blonde. I didn’t let it fall in a wild mass of waves anymore, either, instead preferring to keep it off my face in a ponytail or a bun.
Gone too was the thick charcoal eye makeup, the bright red lipstick. I hardly wore makeup at all anymore, not even to derby matches—I didn’t like to be noticed.
And my most telling feature, my tattoos, were hidden as they always were now beneath my long sleeves.
Still I held my breath, unable to do anything but hold our stare and wait.
Would he recognize me?
“Adele?” The voice called out across the street, a shade deeper than I remembered, though just as capable of making me shiver. I held still like a terrified deer as the guy I’d once known melded with the man in front of me, the two becoming one as he tossed the cardboard aside and loped across the street.
I cleared my throat, emotions that I’d thought long buried roaring to the surface like they’d never been gone.
“Hi, Mal.” Whatever I’d been expecting, it wasn’t the big, open, still freaking sexy smile or the excited look in his eyes.
It wasn’t the bone crushing hug that he pulled me into, either. But instead of tensing, poised for escape like I’d done any time someone touched me in the last two years, a not entirely comfortable discovery slapped me right in the face.
It was impossible to turn back time. I of all people knew that, because I’d once gone to a casual frat party looking for this very man, dying to fix what was broken between us, and instead had been violated, shamed, and run out of town. I wanted to scream at Mal as much as I wanted to hug him, to ask him why he’d called but never come knocking at my door in the days after I’d walked out on him.
I did none of these things. Instead, surprised at myself, I settled into hug and contemplated the fact that Mal’s arms still felt like home.

About the book:

You don’t have to be alone. We are mostly born that way though. We grow up being nurtured to believe that the other half of our soul is somewhere out there. And since there are seven billion people inhabiting our planet, chances are one of them is for you. To find that person, to find your soul piece, or your great love we must count on our paths diverging, the tangling of lives, the soft whispering of one soul recognizing another.

I found my piece. She wasn’t what I was expecting. If you formed a woman’s soul out of black graphite, bathed it in blood, and then rolled it around in the softest rose petals, you still wouldn’t have touched on the complication that was, my match.

Tarryn's Bio
I am a real life villain, truly. I drink sick amounts of Starbucks. Most of the time my hair smells like coffee. I was born in South Africa, and lived there for most of my childhood. Fire Inside (Chaos #2) by Kristen Ashley

About the book:

Lanie Heron isn't looking for love-no surprise, considering her last serious relationship nearly got her killed. So when Lanie propositions Hop Kincaid, all she wants is one wild night with the hot-as-hell biker who patrols with the Chaos Motorcycle Club . . .
For Hop, Lanie has always been untouchable. She's too polished and too classy for his taste. But when she gives Hop the once-over with her bedroom eyes and offers him a night in paradise, he can't say no. And he doesn't regret it when he finds that Lanie is the best thing that's ever happened to him-in or out of bed. Now the trick will be to convince her of that.

Excerpt from FIRE INSIDE by Kristen Ashley

Hop came out of the bathroom to see Lanie on her feet on the other side of the bed, panties on, hands twisted behind her back putting her bra on. Again.
He didn’t say a word. He prowled to her, reached out an arm the second he was close, yanked her to him and fell to his back in the bed, taking her down with him.
“Hop—” she started, pushing her weight against his arms, but he slid her off him then wasted no time rolling over her and pinning her to his bed.
“Sleep,” he ordered when he caught her eyes in the weak dawn. “After rest, I’ll get coffee, we’ll juice up, then round four.”
She blinked and breathed, “Four?”
“Got lots more I want to do to you,” he informed her and watched her eyes go soft, sexier, then her teeth came out to graze her lush lower lip, also fucking sexy, and her arms slid around him.
But she asked, “What about Tack and Ty-Ty?”
“I’ll make sure the coast is clear,” he told her.
“But they’ll see my car,” she told him.
“I’ll move it,” he offered.
Her hand slid up his back, around his shoulder, and then to his neck where her thumb moved to stroke him.
Her touch was light but, fuck, it felt good. He’d never had a woman touch him in an unconscious way like that, just a touch, a stroke, giving something that meant nothing at the same time doing it without thinking about it meant everything.
Shit.
Complicated.
“This is just supposed to be one night,” she reminded him quietly, but he saw it in her eyes. She didn’t even try to hide it. She’d bitten off more than she could chew.
He had too and he was nowhere near done eating.
She was cute. She was sweet. She was hot. She was better than he expected and he’d expected her to be pretty fucking good. All that wrapped in a package that gorgeous?
Yeah.
He was nowhere near done eating.
“Change of plans. A night and a morning and, maybe, an afternoon and, possibly, another night,” he amended, and her eyes got softer as her hand slid up to cup his jaw.
“I have to work,” she told him.
“Call off,” he told her.
“I can’t. I own the joint.” She explained something he knew, that she ran her own advertising agency. “And things are a bit crazy.”
Things were always crazy for Lanie. The woman lived crazy. She thrived on it. If there wasn’t crazy, she stirred it up because she couldn’t breathe without it.

“Babe,” he pressed his body into hers, “told you, got more I want to do to you.”

Own the Wind (Chaos, #1)  Fire Inside (Chaos, #2)

About the Author: Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver, Colorado, and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least) but loopy is good when you want to write.

Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, The Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake. Needless to say, growing up in a house full of music and love was a good way to grow up.  And as she keeps growing up, it keeps getting better.
