Review: Shattering Dawn by Jayne Ann Krentz

Shattering Dawn (The Lost Night Files #3) by Jayne Ann Krentz

Shattering Dawn (The Lost Night Files #3) by Jayne Ann Krentz
Publication Date: January 7th 2025 by Berkley

Rating: ½

My Thoughts:
The Lost Night Files series has been centered on three friends, Amelia, Talia and Pallas, trying to find out what happened seven months earlier when they went to Lucent Springs Hotel, thinking they were being interviewed for a job and ended up waking up the next day with no memory of what happened. Each had minor psychic talents that were enhanced and strengthened after that “lost” night. Since then, they’ve been searching for answers, starting a Podcast to shine light on the event and get answers.

The story opens with Amelia being stalked by someone unknown. With the danger they’ve each faced amplified by their public investigations into that “lost night” Amelia feels it wise to hire a detective/bodyguard to get to the bottom of it. On the surface Gideon Sweetwater sounds skeptical, but he’s got his own talents he’s not eager to share. Then Ameila and Gideon discover an unexpected connection that puts them both in danger.

Shattering Dawn was an action-packed, page-turning mystery! A blend of romantic suspense with paranormal elements and my favorite installment to date! I really enjoyed all the twists and turns and all the answers we got here, wrapping up into a satisfying conclusion of the series!

About the Book:
An unsettling investigation teaches two deeply suspicious people how to trust in the next thrilling novel of the Lost Night Files trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.

Amelia Rivers, a member of the Lost Night Files podcast team, hires private investigator Gideon Sweetwater to catch the stalker who has been watching her. Amelia suspects the stalker may be connected to the shadowy organization responsible for the night that she and her two friends lost to amnesia—a night that upended their lives and left them with paranormal talents.

Gideon suspects that Amelia is either paranoid or an outright con artist, but he can’t resist the chemistry between them. He takes the case despite his skepticism. For her part, Amelia has second thoughts about the wisdom of employing the mysterious Mr. Sweetwater. She is wary of the powerful attraction between them, and deeply uneasy about the nightmarish paintings on the walls of his home. She senses they were inspired by his own dreamscapes.

Amelia knows she doesn’t have time to find another investigator, and Gideon is forced to reckon with the truth when he disrupts what was intended to be Amelia’s kidnapping. Now the pair is on the run, with no choice but to return to the haunting ruins of the old hotel where Amelia’s lost night occurred. They are desperate to stop a killer and the people who are conducting illegal experiments with a dangerous drug that is designed to enhance psychic abilities. If they are to survive, they will have to trust each other and the passion that bonds them.

My Thoughts:
Seven months ago, Talia March, and her two friends, Pallas and Amelia, went to Lucent Springs, thinking they were being interviewed for a job and ended up waking up the next day with no memory of what happened. Each had minor psychic talents that were enhanced and strengthened after that “lost” night. Since then, they’ve been searching for answers, starting a Podcast to shine light on the event and get answers. A tip comes in that points to how they were all selected and targeted and Talia is tasked with retrieving it. This is where she meets up with Luke Rand, a man also in search of answers after suffering a similar experience. Pheobe, the woman with the list disappears, and Talia knows she’s been taken. She and Luke band together to find her. Of course, there’s an undercurrent of attraction between them as they sort out whether they can trust each other.

Luke and Talia’s investigations lead them to sign up for the “Unplugged Experiment” on one of the islands off the coast of Seattle, where they’re supposed to leave their phones and connection to the mainland behind and achieve “inner balance”. It soon becomes apparent that the retreat is a cover for more nefarious activities. Talia and Luke use their talents to try and find Pheobe and stay alive.

On an isolated island, with shifty characters, suspicious deaths, as well as strange plants that seem out of control, Talia and Luke had a lot to contend with. There are connections to past stories that fans will pick up on: The Bluestone Project, The Foundation, and a few familiar names, but The Night Island can easily be read as a standalone.

The Night Island was another fun, action-packed installment of The Lost Files series. Jayne Ann Krentz blends romantic suspense with a bit of the paranormal and a lot of imagination for a fast-paced, entertaining mystery.

Book Description:

The disappearance of a mysterious informant leads two people desperate for answers to an island of deadly deception in this new novel in the Lost Night Files trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.

Talia March, Pallas Llewellyn, and Amelia Rivers, bonded by a night they all have no memory of, are dedicated to uncovering the mystery of what really happened to them months ago—an experience that brought out innate psychic abilities in each of them. The women suspect they were test subjects years earlier, and that there are more people like them—all they have to do is find the list. When Talia follows up on a lead from Phoebe, a fan of the trio’s podcast, she discovers that the informant has vanished.

Talia isn’t the only one looking for Phoebe, however. Luke Rand, a hunted and haunted man who is chasing the same list that Talia is after, also shows up at the meeting place. It’s clear he has his own agenda, and they are instantly suspicious of each other. But when a killer begins to stalk them, they realize they have to join forces to find Phoebe and the list.

The rocky investigation leads Talia and Luke to a rustic, remote retreat on Night Island in the Pacific Northwest. The retreat promises to rejuvenate guests with the Unplugged Experience. Upon their arrival, Talia and Luke discover guests are quite literally cut off from the outside world because none of their high-tech devices work on the island. It soon becomes clear that Phoebe is not the first person to disappear into the strange gardens that surround the Unplugged Experience retreat. And then the first mysterious death occurs…

Blog Tour Review & Excerpt: Sleep No More by Jayne Ann Krentz

Sleep No More (The Lost Night Files #1) by Jayne Ann Krentz

My Thoughts:
Pallas Llewellyn had a successful career as an interior designer utilizing her paranormal talent to balance spaces until seven months ago when she and two other women, Talia and Amelia, lost a whole night of memories. Since then, Pallas, Talia and Amelia’s psychic talents have grown and morphed into more and the three women have banded together to find out exactly what happened. Now they run a podcast, The Lost Night Files, to investigate cold cases, looking specifically for more affected like them.

Ambrose Drake hasn’t been able to sleep well since his abilities were enhanced and so he checks into a sleep clinic to help. Unfortunately, the experience went horribly wrong, and Ambrose is sure a woman was murdered, but can’t prove it so he calls on The Lost Night Files to investigate.

Pallas goes to investigate and together they try and get to the bottom of what happened while still navigating their new normal. Their investigation puts them in danger as they get closer to the truth and closer to each other.

Sleep No More was an entertaining, page-turning mystery, a blend of romantic suspense with paranormal elements. Jayne Ann Krentz has a certain brand of storytelling that fans will recognize and enjoy in this first installment of her new series. Pallas and Ambrose’s story wraps up nicely, but there are threads of their lost night that are still unsolved, a perfect lead-in for Talia and Amelia in coming books.

About the Book

New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz returns with the first novel of the Lost Night Files, an exciting new romantic suspense trilogy about a night that changed three women forever—but that none of them can remember.

Seven months ago, Pallas Llewellyn, Talia March, and Amelia Rivers were strangers, until their fateful stay at the Lucent Springs Hotel. An earthquake and a fire partially destroyed the hotel, but the women have no memory of their time there. Now close friends, the three women co-host a podcast called the Lost Night Files, where they investigate cold cases and hope to connect with others who may have had a similar experience to theirs—an experience that has somehow enhanced the psychic abilities already present in each woman.

After receiving a tip for their podcast, Pallas travels to the small college town of Carnelian, California, to explore an abandoned asylum. Shaken by the dark energy she feels in the building, she is rushing out when she’s stopped by a dark figure—who turns out to be the women's mysterious tipster.

Ambrose Drake is certain he’s a witness to a murder, but without a body, everyone thinks he’s having delusions caused by extreme sleep deprivation. But Ambrose is positive something terrible happened at the Carnelian Sleep Institute the night he was there. Unable to find proof on his own, he approaches Pallas for help, only for her to realize that Ambrose, too, has a lost night that he can’t remember—one that may be connected to Pallas. Pallas and Ambrose conduct their investigation using the podcast as a cover, and while the townsfolk are eager to share what they know, it turns out there are others who are not so happy about their questions—and someone is willing to kill to keep the truth from coming out.

My Thoughts:
Olivia LeClair finds herself in the middle of the search for the mysterious Vortex lab when Harlan Rancourt shows up and insists, she’s the key to finding the location. She can’t imagine how she’d be helpful, but when Harlan claims to have a lead on the murder of her mother and that it’s all tied up in the search for Vortex, she agrees to help. Upon their first meeting it was obvious these two were a romance just waiting to happen.

Lightning in a Mirror is the third and final book in the Fogg Lake series, but I don’t think it’s completely necessary to read the previous books to enjoy it. To be honest, I forgot a lot of the details, but it still was a fun and entertaining read. Jayne Ann Krentz created an original, imaginative world. As a result of past covert government experiments/research the inhabitants of Fogg Lake ended up with paranormal powers and these powers have passed down through subsequent generations.

Olivia is a private investigator, mainly employed by The Foundation, an agency that sort of polices the paranormal world, using her psychic abilities to assist her. She grew up in Fogg Lake, a descendant of one of the Vortex lab workers, and so not only was she on Harlan’s radar, but also The Piper, a deranged murderer. Why does The Piper need her and why does Harlan want to find the Vortex lab so urgently? These are two of the mysteries at the heart of the story. It was a fun mixture of action, romance, and danger. I thought things wrapped up nicely, but also there’s a lot of threads that could be continued.

Book Description:

The final installment in the chilling Fogg Lake trilogy by New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz.

Olivia LeClair's experiment with speed dating is not going well. First there was the nasty encounter with the date from hell who tried to murder her and now the mysterious Harlan Rancourt—long believed dead—sits down at her table and tells her she's the only one who can help him locate the legendary Vortex lab.

This is not what Olivia had in mind when she signed up for the Four Event Success Guaranteed package offered by the dating agency. She doesn't have much choice, though, because her psychic investigation firm works for the mysterious Foundation and Victor Arganbright, the director, is adamant that she assist Harlan. There's just one problem—no one knows Harlan's real agenda. His father once ran the Foundation like a mob organization, and Harlan was destined to be his heir. There's a real possibility Harlan has returned to claim his inheritance.

For now, however, it's a case of the enemy of my enemy is my friend because others are after the secrets of the long-lost lab. Unfortunately for Olivia, the one thing friend and foe have in common is that everyone is convinced she is the key. Her unique psychic talent is required to defuse the ticking time bomb that is Vortex.

Neither trusts the other but Olivia and Harlan soon realize they must work together to survive and unlock the Bluestone Project's most dangerous secrets before more innocent people die.

Review: Guild Boss by Jayne Castle

Guild Boss (Ghost Hunters #15) by Jayne Castle
Publication Date: November 16th 2021 by Berkley Books
Pages: 304
Source: Publisher
Rating:

My Thoughts:
Lucy finds herself drugged, kidnapped, left in the underground hallucinating with no apparent way out, until Ghost Hunter Gabriel Jones, with the help of a dust bunny named Otis, shows up to rescue her. There’s an instant attraction, but Gabriel must ship off for the next assignment immediately, not realizing that the danger and drama has just begun for Lucy.

No one believes Lucy’s story, thinking she got drunk, got lost and then had a mental breakdown, her work reputation goes down the toilet. Gabriel disappears and she has no one to back up her story. Now that Gabriel’s back in town as the new Guild Boss for Illusion Town, Lucy is less than pleased to see him. However, he plans on getting to the bottom of Lucy’s ordeal, while helping salvage her career.

Guild Boss is set in a futuristic world reminiscent of Las Vegas with its glitzy lights and atmosphere with a darker underbelly and some paranormal oddities. Lucy and Gabriel are powerful talents in their field, and that makes Lucy a target for a larger conspiracy. They work together while Lucy works through her hard feelings toward Gabriel, and he tries to figure out whether Lucy’s recollection of the past wasn’t the product of her hallucinations. All the while battling constant dangers and the attraction brewing between them.

Guild Boss was a fun, action-packed futuristic mystery with a steamy romance at the core. I haven’t read the previous books, it’s part of a larger series, but it works well as a standalone.

Book Description:

Welcome to Illusion Town on the colony world of Harmony--like Las Vegas on Earth, but way more weird.

Living in this new, alien world doesn't stop the settlers from trying to re-create what they've left behind. Case in point--weddings are still the highlight of any social calendar. But it's the after-party that turns disastrous for Lucy Bell. Kidnapped and drugged as she leaves the party, she manages to escape--only to find herself lost in the mysterious, alien underground maze of glowing green tunnels beneath Illusion Town. She's been surviving on determination and cold pizza, scavenged for her by a special dust bunny, when help finally shows up.

Gabriel Jones is the Guild Hunter sent to rescue her, but escaping the underground ruins isn't the end of her troubles--it's only the beginning. With no rational reason for her abduction, and her sole witness gone on another assignment for the Guild, whispers start circulating that Lucy made it all up. Soon her life unravels until she has nothing left but her pride. The last thing she expects is for Gabriel Jones to come back to town for her.

The Lucy that Gabriel finds is not the same woman he rescued, the one who looked at him as if he were her hero. This Lucy is sharp, angry, and more than a little cynical--instead of awe, she treats him with extreme caution. But a killer is still hunting her, and there aren't a lot of options when it comes to heroes. Despite her wariness, Gabriel is also the one person who believes Lucy--after all, he was there. He's determined to help clear her reputation, no matter what it takes. And as the new Guild Boss, his word is law, even in the lawlessness of Illusion Town.

Review: All the Colors of Night by Jayne Ann Krentz

All the Colors of Night (Fogg Lake #2) by Jayne Ann Krentz

Pages: 336

My Thoughts:
Sierra Raines is a descendant of the Fogg Lake residents who were imbued with paranormal powers and sensibilities after a government experiment/research project gone wrong.

All the Colors of the Night is book two in the Fogg Lake series where the residents and descendants of Fogg Lake possess paranormal sensitivities and/or powers after a government research project gone wrong. Sierra Raines, the daughter of Fogg Lake parents has her own special gifts, but has had trouble settling on just what career path she wants to take. Currently she’s a “go-between” for the Vault, a paranormal artifact dealer and buyers who are in search of objects with paranormal properties. It’s not a danger free job as a lot of the collectors are seriously obsessive and some are downright unhinged. But Sierra isn’t a defenseless woman, so she keeps at it until a clearer path or calling presents itself.

North Chastain has lived with the tarnished reputation his Grandfather left. Rumored to have sold information on paranormal weapons to nefarious parties and disappearing without a trace North strives to make up for his Grandfather’s past sins. North works for the Foundation, a sort of policing body for the paranormal world, as investigator or cleanup crew when things go wrong. Lately, North’s holding onto his powers by a thread, having to wear paranormally charged sunglasses to stop the hallucinations and loss of power.

When North’s father, Chandler, is attacked and the paranormal artifact he had is stolen, North must find out how to reverse the paranormal damage that continues to disrupt and weaken his father’s aura or lose his him for good. For this he needs Sierra’s help, as her paranormal gift is perfect for tracking the artifact and the two are paired together. Of course, there’s an instant attraction between them which only increases as they work side by side.

I enjoyed this installment even more than the first. All the Colors of the Night was an exciting read! I was glued to the pages from the first scene until the end. As the clock winds down, North and Sierra face danger at every step, narrowing missing death a few times. North and Sierra get to know each other while searching for the solution to Chandler’s deteriorating condition, so it didn’t feel like an insta-love romance, but a natural and inevitable conclusion.  I was all in for their HEA.

All Colors of the Night is book two in the series, but I don’t think you need to read the previous book to enjoy the story. The history of Fogg Lake is explained enough were you don’t feel lost.

Review & Giveaway: The Vanishing by Jayne Ann Krentz

Publication Date: January 7th 2020 by Berkley
Pages: 304
Source: Publisher
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo | iBooks

About the book:

From New York Times bestselling author Jayne Ann Krentz comes a new gripping romantic suspense trilogy fraught with danger and enigma.
Forty years ago in the small town of Fogg Lake, "The Incident" occurred: an explosion in the cave system that released unknown gases, causing peculiar effects on its residents, such as strange visions and ominous voices. Not wanting the government to get involved, they chalked it up to the hallucinogenic effects of mushrooms. Little did they know these effects would linger through the generations....
Residents Catalina Lark and Olivia Dayton have been best friends for years and own an investigation firm together, using what they call the "other sight" to help with their business. When Olivia goes missing, Cat frantically begins the search for her alone when the town does nothing about it. When scientist Slate Trevelyan shows up, she has no choice but to accept his help even though there's something about him she just can't trust. The duo discovers someone is hunting the two witnesses of a murder in Fogg Lake fourteen years ago—the very one Cat and Olivia witnessed as teens, one that they couldn't prove happened. Cat and Slate's search for Olivia takes them down a rabbit hole that is far more dangerous and mysterious than they ever expected, and with a killer in their midst, neither of them can foresee who will come out alive.

My Thoughts:
Catalina and Olivia grew up in Fogg Lake where the town went through some sort of “incident” forty years back that left most with special/supernatural powers.  Because of this the residents try to keep the town off the radar from outsiders, knowing how most of the world views claims of paranormal activity or sensitivity. They don’t want to become lab rats or have scientists descend onto the town making it their personal laboratory.

As teenagers, Catalina and Olivia witness a murder, though, there’s no evidence and the town believe they just hallucinated the whole event, but in the present witnessing this murder leads to Olivia and Catalina running into danger, and Olivia goes missing.  Determined to find her friend Catalina reluctantly accepts the help of the Foundation, an organization that knows of Fogg Lake and deals in the supernatural, both protecting and policing those with special powers. However, in the past the Foundation wasn’t run by scrupulous individuals, so most aware of the paranormal community are wary of them. Slater Arganbright is one of the good guys, but Catalina doesn’t trust him at first.  That doesn’t mean that the energies between them don’t spark and collide, with a burning attraction between them, but still, Catalina wants to be careful.

They investigate with dangers thrown their way, together they keep each other safe.  This was a thrill ride at times, with Catalina and Slater scrapping by.  I thought this was an entertaining start to the Fogg Lake series, but still I had a bit of trouble with the pacing. I think explaining and establishing the ins and outs of this world slowed the pace for me.  The book wraps up the immediate mystery, but there’s more to come with the factions involved.

Review & Giveaway: Untouchable by Jayne Ann Krentz

Publication Date: January 8th by Berkley
Pages: 336
Purchase Links: Amazon | Barnes & Noble | Kobo

About the book:

A man's quest to find answers for those who are haunted by the past leads him deeper into the shadows in this electrifying novel from the New York Times bestselling author of Promise Not to Tell.
Quinton Zane is back.
Jack Lancaster, consultant to the FBI, has always been drawn to the coldest of cold cases, the kind that law enforcement either considers unsolvable or else has chalked up to accidents or suicides. As a survivor of a fire, he finds himself uniquely compelled by arson cases. His almost preternatural ability to get inside the killer's head has garnered him a reputation in some circles--and complicated his personal life. The more cases Jack solves, the closer he slips into the darkness. His only solace is Winter Meadows, a meditation therapist. After particularly grisly cases, Winter can lead Jack back to peace.

But as long as Quinton Zane is alive, Jack will not be at peace for long. Having solidified his position as the power behind the throne of his biological family's hedge fund, Zane sets out to get rid of Anson Salinas's foster sons, starting with Jack.

My Thoughts:
Jack Lancaster is one of the survivors of a barn fire set but cult-leader, Quinton Zane to murder all the member’s children twenty years ago.  His mother died that night, one of the many women murdered by Zane that same night.  Since then Jack and his foster brothers have been hunting Zane even though he disappeared and supposedly died in a yacht fire. In the last book it was clear the maniac is very much alive, and aware of their investigative efforts putting all the brothers in danger.

Jack seems to be the special target of Zane because of his almost uncanny knack to predict the actions of criminals.

We meet Winter in the prologue as she uses her ability at hypnotism, which was pretty impressive!  Years later she’s in Eclipse Bay, Oregon as a meditation therapist helping Jack to control his lucid dreaming, a tool he uses to sort out criminal cases.  He needs her expertise, because lately these dreams turn into nightmares of flames and darkness.  But Jack and Winter are thrown together as more than therapist and client when Winter is violently attacked.

Untouchable was entertaining from page one, the kind of book you could easily knock out in an afternoon.  Lots of action, fast-paced, but it didn’t have the same zing that the previous book, Promise Not to Tell, had.  Also, there were parts that felt a little farfetched, and while I don’t totally mind that given this is fiction, it does make it hard to buy into the story. Still, with that said, it was an exciting, fun read.
