Review: Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright

Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack, #1)

Feral Sins (The Phoenix Pack #1) by Suzanne Wright
Published: February 19th 2013 by Montlake Romance
About the book: When female wolf shifter Taryn Warner first encounters Trey Coleman, an alpha male wolf shifter with a dangerous reputation, she’s determined to resist his charms. After all, Trey—who was only fourteen when he defeated his own father in a duel, winning the right to be alpha of his pack—can’t have anything to offer the talented healer besides trouble, or so she thinks.

Taryn finds herself drawn in by Trey’s forceful demeanor and arctic-blue eyes, and she eventually agrees to enter an uneasy alliance with him. If the two succeed in convincing their respective packs that they’ve chosen each other as mates, Trey will win valuable political allies, while Taryn will escape an odious arranged mating.

But there are a lot of potential pitfalls to this plan—including the very real possibility that the wolf shifters, overwhelmed by their growing attraction to each other, will be unable to maintain the clear heads needed to pull off the deception.

My Thoughts:
This was a SCORCHER and a sheer guilty-pleasure to read!! I LOVED this story and feverishly devoured the pages!

Taryn is an Alpha wolf shape-shifter with healing abilities, but she’s latent, which means she can’t shift into wolf form like most other shape-shifters. As soon as her a-hole of a father found out, he looked on her with little more than disgust.  She was a complete disappointment to him, but Taryn didn’t let this ruin her.  She always had her mother’s love and care, and in her opinion, her father could stuff it!

Unfortunately, her father who is the Alpha of the prominent Onyx Pack doesn’t pass up opportunities to make alliances with other packs, and he has no problem using his daughter to do so.  He makes an arrangement to mate Taryn off to another powerful shape-shifter, Roscoe, a cruel, domineering but charismatic man that only wants Taryn for the challenge.  She’s feisty and won’t take his crap which makes him all the more interested.

Enter Trey Coleman, the Alpha wolf from the Phoenix Pack.  He offers a way of escape to Taryn that in spite of her better judgment, she can’t refuse.  Fake that they’re true-mates who’ve just discovered each other, and she gets out of mating Roscoe and he gets a much needed alliance from the Onyx Pack.

Trey is searching all options to keep his pack from being assimilated by force into the pack he left as a teenager.  He almost killed his father at the age of fourteen when he was backed into a corner by cruel treatment, and left soon after.  He’ll try anything to keep his pack safe and separate.  Faking a mating with Taryn will help his defenses, and he finds no pain making that deal.  One look at that gorgeous and feisty female and Trey knows that faking it is even necessary.  She’s the real deal.

I loved Trey and Taryn! Their journey was full of Alpha posturing, with fights on both sides for control that made this wickedly fun! The animal sides of these shape-shifters made emotions and feelings quite intense with every exchange. Watching these two gradually break down the walls built around their hearts was a complete treat.

The wolf-pack dynamic and hierarchy was extremely entertaining.  We have such things as “true mates,” (like a soul mate but more intense, someone who was made especially for you), “branding,” and “inner wolf,” that make up this fantasy world.  The powerful and primitive animal urges made some actions that would normally be unacceptable, exciting and totally understandable.

The thought of being separated from his mate had sent his wolf pacing and growling, fighting for supremacy.  It had nettled Trey’s mating instincts, playing on his protectiveness and possessiveness until all he wanted was to pin her down and bite her, remind her that she belonged to him.  As for Trey the man…equal measures of infuriation and angst had shot through his blood, making anxiety curdle in his stomach.

As I said this was a SCORCHER!! Wickedly sizzling scenes will make it necessary to stick your panties in the freezer before they catch fire!! Oh my word!!  Here’s a little bite to tempt you:

So damn turned on it wasn’t even funny, Trey ravished that carnal mouth, drinking her in. Having this strong Alpha female submit to him like that sent a ravenous hunger like nothing he had ever known before blasting through his system. And not just any strong female, but Taryn.

That is just the tip of the iceberg!  Hot is not a strong enough word!

FYI there is a scene from the original version of this story that is deleted.  I’m happy with that decision because I don’t think it fit with Trey’s character and his possessiveness, but you may want to read it just to compare.  I must warn you it is NOT for the faint of heart, and it involves more than just Trey and Taryn!  Here’s the link for those of you more adventurous types.  Come back and let me know which you prefer in the comments!

I’m waiting with eager anticipation to pick up the next book in the series: Wicked Cravings which centers on Dante the pack’s Beta, or second in command.

This is the second book I’ve read of Suzanne Wright that I loved. The first was: From Rags, and now I know I must pick up more of her writing. This author does not disappoint!
