My Thoughts:
I’m not a huge follower of KA, having only read one of her books, and that was Motorcycle Man. But that being said – it was one of my favorite books ever read and I was really excited when I heard a spin-off series was being written about the Chaos Motorcycle Club. Own the Wind is about the president of Chaos’ daughter Tabby, and one of his ‘brothers’ of the club – Shy Cage.
Shy has been through a rough life, losing his parents at a young age and being raised by an aunt and uncle who treated him horribly. He was lost in the world until he found Chaos and they became his family. He works hard, spends time with his ‘brothers’, and has a reputation of being a womanizer.
Tabby has grown up around the men in the club and knows the way things work. The guys protect her and are there for her no matter the situation. And she’s had a crush on Shy since she was 16 and he helped get her out of trouble. Fast forward a few years and she’s in trouble again – and Shy is the one who bails her out. But he lays it out for her that she’s better than that and needs to get her act together. She’s going to school to be a nurse and he doesn’t want her screwing up her life. It breaks her heart when he treats her that way, but she ends up taking his advice and focusing on school and her studies.
More time passes and she ends up falling in love and getting engaged to someone who’s on the straight and narrow and doesn’t understand the ways of the club and her family. But they are making it work and are planning a wedding when tragedy strikes, leaving Tabby heartbroken and alone. She turns to Shy for support and friendship and he is there for her through the healing process. All the while they are falling slowly in love with each other.
Throughout their story, they have several issues to overcome and situations that test their relationship and love for each other – but they have a love so strong and steady that nothing was keeping them apart. That was the beautiful part of this book. You NEVER doubted their love for each other. They may fight and have misunderstandings – but there was never a situation of running away or miscommunication. There was outside drama and angst – but I was never in fear of these two losing each other. I loved that about the book.
But it has to be said that if you aren’t a big KA fan – you may get annoyed by the rambling-type writing style (where things are repeated a LOT), or the fact that the dialogue is extremely caveman-like. When I read Motorcycle Man – I was so engrossed in the story that it never bothered me at all. I love a hot alpha man and I was all about the bossy biker ways. But in this book, it became distracting for me and I even had a hard time understanding the dialogue at times. I found myself rereading paragraphs like I was trying to translate the words into English. That became a little frustrating and I lost some steam towards the middle of the book. I ended up putting it down to read another book and when I came back to it – I was sucked right back into their world and devoured the rest of the book.
If you love a hot alpha biker badass – look no more. It’s sexy, it’s romantic, and it is suspenseful. It never lacked action and the constant turn of events kept you reading and wanting more. Once you get engrossed into the story and used to the writing style – it’s like you can’t come up for air and want to just keep reading until you finish it!
